Im gutted, when I was younger my late father used to talk about Ted Heath & his band, its only now with the advent of youtube and maturity that I can really appreciate his taste from that war time era!
@musician992008 Thanks for that info Jimmy Coombes is my Uncle and I lost contact with him in the early 60s I never realised he moved to Canada as my cousin Kay never informed me but good to know he carried on with his career after the band finished after Teds death.
Ken Kiddier (baritone), Leslie Gilbert (lead alto), Don Savage (second alto). It's on the Carnegie Hall CD, recorded about three months after this was filmed at the Hammersmith Palais in February 1956.
Can someone post "Etrospect" and "Rhapsody For Drums"? It was an EP on the London label. Don't know the year. The drum solo for Rhapsody is in this clip and it was a joy to see it performed.
In the late 1940s I went to the Ted Heath Sunday night "Swing Sessions" at the London Paladium.
2/6 (12p) in the Gods. But what nights they were. Paul Carpenter was the compare, Victor Feldman was there on one occasion before going to USA. E G Podgeson made his final apperance there with the band. I saw the great George Shering there the very night before he sailed for USA. Ah! such good memories.
Wonderful! I have never seen footage of THE BAND. I'm from "across the pond" but I can say Heath ranks right up there in my book with the top big bands of all time. Fabulous!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this video. My dad's old records of Ted Heath's great band inspired me to take up music. His albums were amazingly popular here in America.
Brilliant, the best swing band by far, the blaring trumpets are a joy. Never seen film of the band, what film is this from? Areal treat thanks for posting
Ted Heath's band were the best! Absolutely awesome! They even 'frightened' the great Count Basie. Every one of the musicians were superb. Pratt, Ezzard, Lusher, Hawksworth, McKenzie and the genius of Ronnie Verrell, the greatest drummer in the world (in my opinion).
Sonds the same for me as recorded on his live perform at Carnegie Hall late '50's recording. Heard him here at the Lyric in Baltimore- probably after his gig at NY-where he played the H W C.
If I ever lead my own big band, this is how I would want my brass section to sound--screamin'!! Bells right over the stands and into the audience for huge blair (rather than a more muted sound with bells into the stands as the new Glen Miller band does) and very close trumpet voicing (Millers are more open). This is not the same arrangement as from the mid 1950"s record by Heath "Strike Up the Band." If you are a Heath fan you NEED that CD!! Thanks for such a really cool post!

The drummer from this band, Ronnie Verrell, was the drummer for the Muppet character Animal. That's how I discovered him. Incredible talent!

The huge international popularity of "Hawaiian War Chant", which started as an actual Hawaiian song in the 1860s, always astounds me.

Ted Heath's band were the greatest. Even Basie said that they frightened him ... praise indeed.

One of the many reasons I love British orchestras. Ted Heath is the greatest!

Trombones, Left to Right are: Ric Kennedy, Wally Smith, Don Lusher and Keith Christie...I've been asked a few times who they are.

Help please: around 1954 a big band (perhaps Heath's) made a record of a tune called "Eleanora". Can't find it anywhere. Anyone else remember this ?
