I'm 57 and as big a Janis Ian fan as ever! When she sang 'At Seventeen' she sang about everyone, male and female, who were not the beautiful ones. I've never been touched by the music as much as when she has sung for it is like she is singing my life, and my feelings.
Me enamoré de Janis Ian yendo a casa de mi mejor amigo cuando tenía dieciséis o diecisiete escuchando en su tocadiscos Between de lines. Quizá yo también aprendí la verdad a los diecisiete.
Such a wonderful LP it is a bit forgotten now days but ranks with those with the love of poetry & music as 1 of the best ever. This is such powerful song my oldest friend recently lost his wife & when we talk I hear Janis whispering this beautiful song in my mind. She says all the words he is trying to find. A powerful wonderful loving song that means so much to me. Thanks for posting
She knew me at 17 , I've always loved Janis Ian. I guess I heard something in her music that others didn't , they let a wonderful woman and wonderful music pass.
I never tire of listening to Janis Ian...........been listening since I was 19....and Im 52 now!! So here's to a great great artist!! We need more singer song writers like her today and urgently...not the crap/porn stuff that is being passed off today as 'music'......
Her blessing and curse is that she is honest. While there were a couple albums that were "commercial" she returned to the truth of her art and vision and since then, has not wavered from it. Like Beth Nielsen Chapman, she writes the stories and dreams of her heart, which is, in this current musical atmosphere of glitz and pomp, not what the industry necessarily wants. Neither is a gaga or Madonna, thank the Lord, and that makes them passe. but so much better.
i was at my citys talent show and one of the acts played this song. they had a guy playing guitar and a guy with a wonderful english accent singing. it was definately the best act
BTW i always picture england from hetalia singing this.
seriously though. this song makes me really sad for some reason.
This is just a sample of the power of Janis Ian's poetry set to music, a love song of surprising intensity. Don't let its apparent simplicity fool you - there is soul depth and understated emotion here that will shake tears from your eyes if you will be still and listen. One of the best creations, one of so many best songs, from poet/songwriter/singer Janis Ian.
My very favorite of Janis Ian's extraordinary songs. It is beautiful, it is haunting in its intensity, and it touches that peart of our heart that wants to understand and survive it all. So powerful, so gentle in its indictment, so beautiful in the end. It brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. Thank you Janis, for a lovely reminder we can still feel those feelings in our heart and use them to be a little better than we were before.
It is a masterpiece. For some reason I had this song in my head, her songs can do that to me, suddenly just pop up. Heard and saw her play a couple of years ago in Rotterdam, just awesome :)
man, this song brings back memories! i bet I haven't heard it in well over 30 years. i see why i never objected when my college roommate wanted to play his janis ian album--yes, she's not just for girls, ya' know. great song. great..

I don't want to ride the milk train anymore
I'll go to bed at night, and wake in with the dawn
and lunch at half past noon, dinner prompt at five
comfort all the few old friends, long past their prime
Pass the tea and sympathy for good old days long gone
we'll drink a toast to those who most believed in what they won
it's a long long time till morning, plays wasted on the dawn
and I'll not write another line, for my true love is gone

When the guest have gone, I'll tidy up the rooms
I'll turn the covers down and gazing at the moon
I'll pray to go quite mad and ling in long ago
when you and I were one, so very long ago
Pass the tea and sympathy for good old days long gone
we'll drink a toast to those who most believed in what they won
it's a long long time till morning, plays wasted on the dawn
and I'll not write another line, for my true love is gone

When I have no dreams to give you anymore
I'll light a blazing fire and wait within the door
and throw my life away " I wonder why?" they all will say
And now I lay me down to sleep, forever and a day
Pass the tea and sympathy for good the old days are dead
Let's drink a toast to those who best survived the life they've led
it's a long long time till morning, so build your fires high
now I lay me down to sleep, forever by your side
