  • TO WRITE A WONDERFUL SONG LIKE AT SEVENTEEN SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT HER OF HOW TALANTED AND CLEVER JANIS IAN IS

  • I LOVE JANIS IAN SHE IS THE KIND OF ARTIST I CALL AN EMOTIONAL STORY TELLER SO TALANTED GREAT SINGER AND SONG WRITER I LOVE THIS KIND OF MUSIC I PUT JANIS IN THE SAME CATEGORY OF PEOPLE LIKE BRILLIANT LATE EVA CASSIDY I THINK IT TAKES A DEEP THINKING PERSON TO REALLY APPRECIATE THIS KIND OF MUSIC

  • I'm 57 and as big a Janis Ian fan as ever! When she sang 'At Seventeen' she sang about everyone, male and female, who were not the beautiful ones. I've never been touched by the music as much as when she has sung for it is like she is singing my life, and my feelings.

  • Me enamoré de Janis Ian yendo a casa de mi mejor amigo cuando tenía dieciséis o diecisiete escuchando en su tocadiscos Between de lines. Quizá yo también aprendí la verdad a los diecisiete.

  • Such a powerful song. I love love this album. It was one of my favourites when I was in high school in the 70's. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Such a wonderful LP it is a bit forgotten now days but ranks with those with the love of poetry & music as 1 of the best ever. This is such powerful song my oldest friend recently lost his wife & when we talk I hear Janis whispering this beautiful song in my mind. She says all the words he is trying to find. A powerful wonderful loving song that means so much to me. Thanks for posting

  • A genius ahead of her time. She has never received the recognition she deserves. An amazing woman-An amazing Artist, Poet, Musician.

  • She knew me at 17 , I've always loved Janis Ian. I guess I heard something in her music that others didn't , they let a wonderful woman and wonderful music pass.

  • omg the veido with the song was beauitful .thank you

  • I never tire of listening to Janis Ian...........been listening since I was 19....and Im 52 now!! So here's to a great great artist!! We need more singer song writers like her today and urgently...not the crap/porn stuff that is being passed off today as 'music'......

  • Such a beautiful 'complete' piece of art. It's stayed in my top three of all time, ever since I first heard it some 36 years ago. Timeless.

  • I understand this message so well.. and I need this song at the moment.

  • Her blessing and curse is that she is honest. While there were a couple albums that were "commercial" she returned to the truth of her art and vision and since then, has not wavered from it. Like Beth Nielsen Chapman, she writes the stories and dreams of her heart, which is, in this current musical atmosphere of glitz and pomp, not what the industry necessarily wants. Neither is a gaga or Madonna, thank the Lord, and that makes them passe. but so much better.

  • totally agree, lovely voice and lovely lyrics, i've always loved her

  • My computer program needs blue pills---as I get my comment almost done-so is song. SO I willsay "A GREAT SONE" BUT LOVED THe scene-brilliant-G

  • I don't want to ride the milk train anymore

I'll go to bed at night, and wake in with the dawn

and lunch at half past noon, dinner prompt at five

comfort all the few old friends, long past their prime

Pass the tea and sympathy for good old days long gone

we'll drink a toast to those who most believed in what they won

it's a long long time till morning, plays wasted on the dawn

and I'll not write another line, for my true love is gone

  • When the guest have gone, I'll tidy up the rooms

I'll turn the covers down and gazing at the moon

I'll pray to go quite mad and ling in long ago

when you and I were one, so very long ago

Pass the tea and sympathy for good old days long gone

we'll drink a toast to those who most believed in what they won

it's a long long time till morning, plays wasted on the dawn

and I'll not write another line, for my true love is gone

  • When I have no dreams to give you anymore

I'll light a blazing fire and wait within the door

and throw my life away " I wonder why?" they all will say

And now I lay me down to sleep, forever and a day

Pass the tea and sympathy for good the old days are dead

Let's drink a toast to those who best survived the life they've led

it's a long long time till morning, so build your fires high

now I lay me down to sleep, forever by your side

  • Do I remember? Could I ever forget? Never - what a wonderful lyricist & singer - so full of emotion & passion.

  • i was at my citys talent show and one of the acts played this song. they had a guy playing guitar and a guy with a wonderful english accent singing. it was definately the best act

BTW i always picture england from hetalia singing this.

seriously though. this song makes me really sad for some reason.

  • I'd nearly forgotten about this song, fabulous. Off a an album I played 'till the needle wore through the vinyl. Thankyou.

  • let's drink a toast to everyone who ever loved this song!

  • I just wish I had your talent !!

  • Certainly one of my favorite Janis Ian songs...you did a lovely job. Thank you for posting this.

  • @){++++++++++++

  • One of my very favorites of Janis Ian's work. "Let's drink a toast to those who most believe in what the've done ..."

  • what is the name of the tune janis ian sang in the film four rode out? thanks.

  • Powerful video, very moving.

  • This is just a sample of the power of Janis Ian's poetry set to music, a love song of surprising intensity. Don't let its apparent simplicity fool you - there is soul depth and understated emotion here that will shake tears from your eyes if you will be still and listen. One of the best creations, one of so many best songs, from poet/songwriter/singer Janis Ian.

  • My very favorite of Janis Ian's extraordinary songs. It is beautiful, it is haunting in its intensity, and it touches that peart of our heart that wants to understand and survive it all. So powerful, so gentle in its indictment, so beautiful in the end. It brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. Thank you Janis, for a lovely reminder we can still feel those feelings in our heart and use them to be a little better than we were before.

  • It is a masterpiece. For some reason I had this song in my head, her songs can do that to me, suddenly just pop up. Heard and saw her play a couple of years ago in Rotterdam, just awesome :)

  • great vision...enjoyed much

  • man, this song brings back memories! i bet I haven't heard it in well over 30 years. i see why i never objected when my college roommate wanted to play his janis ian album--yes, she's not just for girls, ya' know. great song. great..

  • @VictoriaJane1 I agree!!! I was so very young when I was listening regularly to Janis and her musical poetry. If you like this try some Harry Chapin....A Better Place to Be....another brilliant beautiful inspiration set to music~ JBF

  • Saw her live a few years ago..

    Incredible performer.

If you get a chance to see her, don't miss it..

    She's still incredible..

  • Janis is a treasure. Between the Lines is my favourite album. A classic and every song a gem - Tea and sympathy is zenith .

  • Beautiful song and video.

  • yeah the black n' white is great, she is so fab, thanks for the post.

  • What the hell?

  • we saw her in jacksonville florida in a small auditorium, very intimate setting and she was great, such talent...it's a shame we are all old now...nothing compares to the 70's music, never will....so sad

  • Just how many times can one listen to this wonderful song without getting fed up? Count the stars!!

  • ebonics open up your mind....video doesnt have to be literal to the song!

  • This song is great. The video is weird though. This is about an old woman, who is missing her deceased elderly husband. The video just doesn't fit. Sorry. Thanks for posting the song though.

  • the video is phantom of the opera. Just fyi

  • let be happy, we live ! we live in this moment in this life.

and we can say THIS IS MUSIC

  • oh dear Janis I've loved you sincethe first time I saw you at the greek theater. That night you came to me in my dream. WOW and so we've been together now for 38 years ."AND NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP, FOREVER BY YOUR SIDE" 143 MARIA... XXXooooooXXX

  • She is, indeed one of the greats.

  • it brings tears to my eyes. just wow.

  • Janis is a legend and her music will attract people of new generations

  • Janis Ian is one of the best singer

songwriters of the century. Her musical appeal spans generations. Saw her in Boston only a couple of years ago and she was FANTASTIC still!! She's simply wonderful!! I love this woman's sweet voice and her command of the audience. She's warm, witty, charming and terribly talented... for which I am, and always will be, truly grateful. So glad I got to meet

her in person after her show in Boston.

What a terrific lady she is!! :))

  • As an African American male I have always been amazed by Janis Ian's songs. Yes, she has her critics, but I think that some day in the future somebody is going to rediscover her album "Between The Lines" (from which this song was taken) and wonder what fools we were for neglecting such a masterpiece.

  • You are so right Between the Lines is a complete Masterpiece ! Bring on the young generation x

  • @VillasHampton

We are all fools and many more have come before us, but it is those who don't neglect the art of music and creation that feel the beauty touching their hearts and gain a little wisdom along the way

I'll definately take a chance to listen to it myself. thanks for the recommendation

  • @VillasHampton I guess I am one of those "fools" ..im blown away by such a beautiful masterpiece.

  • @VillasHampton don't matter where you are from it's where you are heading that is important & you are so so right about "tween the Lines a work of beauty stirs my emotions every time I hear a song from it. I hope your journey is filled with life.

  • @VillasHampton I got this Album when it first came out and have the cd now.. great songs and great songwriting .. She's a legend !!

  • @VillasHampton TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MY FRIEND!!!

  • @VillasHampton JMO but, Janis Ian like India.Arie, Tracy Chapman or Carole King, breath life into the words of their songs. Their music comes from their souls; from a place beyond gender or race. There's nothing contrived or artificial. Both are strong women who live life on their terms, not the expectations of others.

And I hope you're right: That "Between The Lines' is rediscovered, for its beauty and honesty.

  • @VillasHampton We knew who she was, back in the day, Villas. Especially us songwriters. You can search my song, "Another Kind of Magic" Lauren Blaine if you'd like. Deedee O'Malley too. You can totally hear Janis' influence in Deedee's songs.

It's nice to find another appreciator such as yourself. Janis not only has depth, but she is brave enough to share it with us. Hat's off.

  • I bought all of Janis's albums in the 70's as a young man living in the UK. I believed at the time that this was what music was all about - beautiful melody and words perfectly crafted. This is a classic example and touches the soul.

A great shame she is not more universally acclaimed, as she is probably one of the greatest musicians of all time.

  • Her songs remain legend

  • time slows down.. the gravity of memories pull me inward at the end of this song and I'm left tredding water in the middle of an ocean..not knowing which direction the shore lies

  • I dedicate this song to my first love: Derek Thomas.

    Born: 09-11-1961

    Died: 02-20-2004

    I only found out yesterday

that I will never see you again.

What cruel circumstances took you from me?

Rest in peace now, my beloved...

  • I truly feel your loss. God bless you and yours. Listen to more of Janis Ian. She is brilliant! I've been a fan since the 60's.

  • Does Beck reference this in "Sexx Laws" or is it just a coincidence ?

  • i love janis ian!!!!!! u wonder why she isnt as famous as she deserves? cause she is lesbian... this incredible woman i'm so happy that i even found out she exists

  • Achingly beautiful performance

  • can you hear my heart beating now?

  • You have done an excellant job of expression, need I say more. BRAVO

  • Let's drink a toast to those who best survive the life they've led"....timeless, eternal, graceful...magnificent

  • swe50 ...your comment was stated very nicely "poetic melancholy " I think Janis is one of the greatest songwriters to ever pick up a pen. I put her in the same room as David Bowie, Tom Waits ,John & Taupin.

  • This is short of a miracle. Ms Ian simply is the Empress of poetic melancholy. Unpretentious singing, simple elegance and depth. Superb

  • The best song from my all-time favourite album, Between the Lines. Just superb.

  • I was thinking about this song tonight. My sister passed away 9 years ago at this time of my comment. Thanks for a breathtaking song.

  • I felt my heart pull when I read your words,I too miss my sister from 15 years ago. When will the pain ever leave.I send my sympathy to you and hope you find peace.God bless

  • Quel plaisir de retrouver Janis j'aime beaucoup cette chanson.

  • Superb I will add this to my "Songs to slash your wrists by !"data base

  • beautiful

  • This is awesome..thank you.

  • God, I love her and the way she makes me feel!!!

  • First heard and had this albumin the 70's. T'was brilliant then and still stands all the tests of time.the whole album is just as brilliant. One of the best ever.

  • beautiful. the whole album 'between the lines' is beautiful. janis ian rocks.

  • Breath takingly sad ... thanks. Leonard Cohen with a twist!!

  • How come this song has never been a big hit? It's so perfect.

  • What I never understood, is how Janis Ian was never (or "almost never") listened here in Brazil. She is perfect, and

her song touch my feelings in the most deep of my soul.

  • one of my mothers funeral tunes absolutly amazin song!

  • This is one of my favourite songs of all time. "Stars" is another.

  • does she know this? or, did you pay copyrights to her?

  • thank you

  • thank you -- simply brilliant

  • Gorgeous. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous :D I especially loved the line, "I'll not write another line." So fitting.

  • Janis Ian is just great isn't she? Saw her live last year - awesome! Brilliant video, that goes well with the song. Also nice to see Phantom free of Andrew Lloyd-Webber!

  • Janis Ian is a master of lost love. Her words paint the perfect picture. Her "Between The Lines" album/CD is full of them.

  • So Beautiful! Perfct!

  • One of many brilliant songs written by janis. Hugely underated in the UK. The strings in my humble opinion add hugely to the song, their searing quality are beautiful and produce the feeling of angst in the song.

  • Oh, such a pretty song... yet this arrangement (the strings, that is) makes it sound so labored.

  • A hiv cried ah thousand tear's since ye went awa...

Why did ye ner tak ma wi ye???

    am sairy...

    Pass Tha Tea an Sympathy...indeed..

Ma heart is broken...ma nichts aw dark...

    A hawp wi meet again...

    Lovly Video..Purfect Song..

    Heather...

  • What a wonderful song. Thank you for putting the video together for it.

  • Truly Wonderful Thanx So Much For Posting.

  • i love it, this is actually my 1st time to hear this song. thanks for this vid
