The electoral collage is for the purpose of protecting smaller states. It does not entirely nullify our votes. Also, this idea that the system was created "to prevent the ignorant from choosing someone" is not entirely true. It was to prevent the majority of people in general as represented by the sovereign states from doing as much damage to the minority as what the could do in a general election.
I would love to see where our vote actually determines the outcome. No one can seem to do it.
The Constitution only mandates that the senators vote a specific way, as to not vote for anyone from their home state. That was the closest I could find.
If you could show me an election that was decided completely by majority (where the Electoral votes were in disagreement), I would love to read about it.
That's just it. It was not intended to be decided by the majority of the country's population. If so, big states like California would have even more pull than they do now. As it stands, each elector of a big state like California counts for 179,000 while each elector in a small state like Wyoming counts for 70,000 votes. This closes the gap between the big and small states and keeps the big states from completely dominating the small states.
Great video, but i think you have misunderstood the idea of using electoral collage. The events that you have mentioned only occurred in 1876, 1888 and 2000. Those 'elites' are actually elected by popular vote (by citizens) within each state. Thus, they are just representative for voting in terms of electoral collage. So they are two results, the presidents popular vote and the electoral collage.
The President is not officially chosen by popular vote. Those elites are supposed to represent popular views, but it does not have to work that way, and sometimes does not. The system was first designed to prevent the ignorant from choosing someone they dont understand.
Today, we have two voting systems, but only one is official. So, my point is that one of those is useless in that particular situation.
I dont mean voting in general is stupid: only when it comes to voting for President.
i like how you make your position clear, and explain it with facts.
an admirable quality.

Otherwise, like in the example I gave, California would have over 9 millions votes while Wyoming would have only 200,000.
