Don't get me wrong I do like the E92 M3 but personally the E46 CSL would be my car of choice. It's just so functional and raw. Surely that is what the M3 is all about? Well at least that was how it started

Man if you want raw functionality take a glance at the E36 LTW/CSL... if E36s are faster than E46s (top end around 80 e36 takes leads, M3 vs M3) then maybe CSL vs. CSL e36 is faster. E36 IMHO is best balanced M3 yet, new ones are too heavy

Very good comment there, and to add to your comment I think all the older E30 E36 E46 were better lookin too.

The reason why I say my choice would be E46 CSL is because the E36 CSL is rarer than rocking horse poo and you wouldn't be able to get your hands on one in a hurry, if at all!. Also the E46 CSL reminds me more of the E30 M3 with its aggressive looks and raw handling. So as far as ownership is concerned i'm comparing the E36 M3 to the E46 CSL.

And without wishing to disagree with you, the E30 M3 was a far superior handling car to the E36 M3, the E36 doesn't even begin to compare. Some of the original E30 drivers still argue that the E30 was the only true M3 ever made and I think I agree in all honesty. About a year ago I nearly bought an E30 M3 over a E36 M3 but only changed my mind due to the practicality of driving it everyday :(

I have an E92 the breaks aren't that bad i brought it to alanta raceway. The breaks were fine intil lap 10 or so then I had a huge peddle fade, almost to the floor. Thats what you get for a heavy car, unlike the CLS.

although the v8 itself is lighter 15kg, produces more power , and its more efficient.. not by much but still... but personally i feel ALL m3's are WAYYY to heavy. reduce luxury and increase sport.. mind you none of this will matter once the e92 CSL comes out!!! and id take the e46 csl over the e92 m3 anyday..

Yes I own an SMG M3. Iv beaten new RS4s off the line. .Iv beaten Ferrari 360s.. why? Cos its a SMG vs a manual. Most drivers (not saying you cant) but most ppl cant get the huge power from ther manuals.

Was the RS4 driver asleep? Seriously I've driven SMG e46s and the throttle cut between shifts KILLS your momentum. Its a really poor solution. In the top sport mode the throttle cut is still terrible. A decent driver in a manual could go faster, not shift faster, but the throttle cut kills the car.

lol I know what your saying. Its kinda like in the Vanquish right. Really over powering aggresiv shifts. But they are still MUCH faster than anyone can shift. The RS4 driver was havin an off day I guess. Of corse he drove past me after a point due 2 the power diffrnce - same with the ferrari. But hey. Not bad for a 3.2 ltr n.a Stght 6 thats 10 years old!!!!

There is no "throttle cut" on mode 6 - it just shifts. It will chirp 3rd gear (with Pilot PS2s) easily with a 4.xx differential.

CAN NEVER beat a fast sequential box. Like Ferraris F1..Lambos E-Gear or BMWs SMG. They have Vids of Manuals vs the sequential version - with pro in the manual and joe average in the smg. SMG RAPES.

SMG II (e46) sucks plain and simple. Horrible throttle cuts, no power shifting, and crappy feel in traffic. Its really horrible. Rumor is this new dual clutch gearbox is nothing short of amazing.

The SMG II is far from horriable. Sorry but I drive mine everyday its fkn great. The auto mode is fkn horriable! THAT I will say yes 2. But the sport mode and the sher power is great. Its a very punchy car - not like the more lazy E92 - thats a V8 for ya tho.

Sorry Ollie, I'd have to aggree with Brad. SMG shifting is 80ms, that 0.008 of a second from gear to gear. It is humanly impossible to achieve that shifting speed, that's the whole point behind SMG.

I`m big fan of new BMW design , new 5 and new 3 (e92) - the are doing great job. I think they have soo much design that it`s too much for average person. Every one will like VW but for me its boring. New BMW have very avangarde design with big attention to details and proportions .

e46 is not better looking, otherwise BMW would not have changed it into e90/92. It's like many people see e30 much better than e46. And e36 probably most popular. It's more like who likes what, cruising or track. But M3csl is a 'killer machine'... 600lb lighter and has more hp/tone. I believe new M3 can go over 190mph, good for German residents...

the e39 m5 is truly the best car out there it has 4 doors. 400hp. easy to tune. daily driver. used about 28,000 usd. 0-60 4.8 seconds. it is gorgeous. and it burns rubber shifting into 3rd. but guess what I am only 14 age doesnt matter it is knowldge my friend

I'm so disappointed. An E46 3 series to an E46 M3 was a tremendous step up in improvement and awesomeness. The E92 3 series to the E92 M3 is not much of a step up especially in the asthetics department. The engine is definately a step up but it still weights 3600lbs! And judging by this comparison test here, there isn't that much of a step up in improvement in all areas from the CSL to the new M3. How come the CSL even looks better~ This makes me sad...
