  • Them front tine tillers are good enough if your tilling the same spot every year..But the rear tine are what you want if your doing harder ground and they are a lot more money thus I have to stick with my old front tine tiller but I am glad to have it and I just love it for what I do..

Thanks for sharing and allowing me to put my 2 cents in :)

  • how they turn out..I hand dig..every thing/like to try some red potatoes this june? western wet washington state..here

  • wrong info wood ash helps to even your ph in acidic soil it acts like lime itdosent really fertalize anything you should have an idea of your soils ph before you add ashes

  • i still would like to know when is the best time to start growing the potatoes?

  • @joetoslow20 it depends on where you live, there are sites that you can check out that will tell you the best time to plant whatever ; like the different foods or even roses, check the sites for the area of where you live and for what it is you want to plant, sorry i can't think at the moment what those sites are but just do a little research and you can find the answers :) but normally planting times for things is after hard winter is done and the ground is thawed and no more frosts expected,

  • lol. wow you posted this on my birthday two years ago and now that I'm planting potatoes I just found it. lol

  • I would rather use a spade

  • I find they grow better in the ground than in raised beds!

  • Thanks for the post I had no idea how potatoes where planted. I have had a veggie garden that did very well. I'll try potatoes too

  • @justonemorename uh, yeah.......& then you crawl back under the bridge & lurk there, right???

  • @justonemorename ....a wheelhoe(non petro) to cultivate throughout the season.

    Unless you're a full-time gardener(ie. you don't have a job) I don't believe you do it.

Like I said, even with a plow & an ox it takes a full day to turn over an acre of soil. That's a fact.

So don't pretend you do it all on your own with a spade & a rake.

    A 1/2 ac garden will feed a whole family....if U've got a family & a family-size-garden, U definitely don't have time to be a full-time peasant.

    I sure don't.....

  • @justonemorename Like I said, anyone can say anything on YT(btw I'm not criticizing your channel, I'm just making an observation about it)

But I've been gardening for most of my life...my own garden is roughly 1/2 acre.It grows enough vegetables & potatoes for our family of 5 for 365 days of the year(almost)We use a tractor to turn it over in the fall & discs to work it up in the spring. To prepare smaller sections, as the season progresses, we use a tiller. We use a ....continued

  • @justonemorename Sorry, but I don't believe u. People can say anything on YT. For instance,u say that you care for a 1/2 acre without any petro.

But it's usually apparent when someone's not telling the truth. There's NO gardening stuff whatsoever on your profile & u think that rowcovers save work

    They don't.They're for insect/frost protection.)

An acre's the traditional amount a man could till(sunrise to sunset) with the aid of an ox.Unless ur unemployed, don't try claiming u do it without petro.

  • your gay

  • rear tine tillers can drag you across the garden though to

  • Rear tillers do not require a person to push down. By holding it in place while the tines turn, the tines will dig deeper. Rear tillers can also penetrate deeper.

  • great video and meat and taters sounds mighty tasty right about now

  • My garden fed me most of the summer.

  • kEEP IT UP MAN...DON'T LET ANYONE BEAT YOU DOWN. YOU ARE A PATRIOT. WE NEED A PATRIOT PARTY. STOCKED ON SILVER. PLANTED A VICTORY GARDEN. YES I'M YELLING HERE WITH MY CAPS...PEOPLE THIS GUY FREED ME FROM MY DEBT SLAVERY AND NOW I'M MORE INDEPENDENT. ROCK ON MAN.!! PEACE.

  • what region of the country is this guy from?

  • @hobguy7996 - SE Texas, I believe.

  • Southeast Texas

  • Oh Crap !

I just posted 2 comments, but I forgot to make the most important comment of all.......

Thank you for making & sharing this video.

(1 thing I disagreed with, but mostly really helpful stuff..... like your other helpful videos that I've watched & liked.

  • Adding wood ashes to the potato plot can cause disease problems.

Wood ashes & bonemeal add potassium & phosphorus to the soil.

But they're both alkaline (lower the soil's ph).

"Potato-scab" is a real problem in alkaline soils.....unless your viewers gardens are naturally very acidic(most aren't) that may be harmful advice.

Ashes & bonemeal are wonderful for most crops, but not potatoes.

    AGED manure's a safer (organic)source of P & K (If you think your granular fertilizer's not enough.)

  • Potatos = spuds

  • You don't need to push down on a rear-tine tiller to dig into the soil, you just need to hold it still and it digs in on its own. Besides, rear-tine tillers can dig in deeper.

  • thank god for survivalistboard! i finally found a worthy replacement for my sleeping medicine!!

i use to watch some of these videos to fall into sleep at night,...IT WORKS

  • How NOT to plant potatoes properly.

  • you got to plant them deeper tooo shallow...

  • It ain't nothing better than a good old home grown tater! Thanks for the info man. I got of row of taters growing in my garden right now and I can hardly wait to dig in .

  • gasoline tillers and anything using gasoline for a garden are for wimps, just use a shovel to turn the dirt, use either a shovel or a sharp blade object to slice the dirt up, then use a hand tiller to mulch it. You feel better about your garden, at least I do. And I am not polluting the ground with oil, gas.

  • You are a wanker mate, what do you mow your lawn with a pair of hand shears too... I am so sick of you greenie fuckers, bunch of hipocrites, you lot whinge and complain about the evioromental damage then go all drive large four drives /svu into the forrest for you greenie tree hugging (think about that damage for you car to get in there and how many trees died for your road into it) ... FRIGGIN GREENIES... I can not wait to try whale and dolphin meat ... mmmmm good food ...

  • first of all, I never said I was an environmental junkie, but since you want to jump to conclusions, I guess the word you used fits you great, WANKER!

second of all, I did cut my garden last year with hand shears, I tried to keep grass in between rows, but that did not word to well, so this year I used a scraper and took top soil off, and turned the dirt with a shovel.

I do not own a suv, I am against them, I do not drive anywhere but to my work area, round trip, 10 miles.

    You are a loser!!!!!!

  • Not all of us are healthy enough. I used to swing hammers and shovels for a living. Now, I can't. Not that it matters, I can't afford a power tiller, either.

  • Nonsense......Our garden provides nearly ALL our veggies & potatoes.

    Family of 5.

We grow at least 500 LB of potatoes.

It takes over 1/2 acre of garden to feed my family.

TRY DOING THAT WITHOUT A TILLER OR TRACTOR!!!!!!

YOU obviously DON'T grow most of your family's food.

Just a small portion of it.

Yet, like a hypocrite, you preach & brag about using only hand-tools......Meanwhile you buy commercially grown potatoes & vegetables that are grown (& shipped) using diesel powered equipment.

  • Thank you for showing that you make an ass of yourself for saying another person is a hypocrite, show me where I said I buy veggies in my comments?

  • You didn't have to say it.

Your comment made it GLARINGLY obvious.

Experienced gardeners know that you use a "spade" not a shovel or "sharp blade object" to turn over the soil.

And you don't use a "hand tiller" to "mulch".

Mulching means covering the soil with organic(or other) matter.

Gardeners use a "hoe" to "weed" or "cultivate" their vegetables.

You're a phoney & any experienced vegetable grower can see it.

    But the internet is anonymous.

Why not aim higher & claim you're a Rocket Scientist?

  • a spade is a shovel, and that is what I used if you want to be that deep on terminology.

I looked back in my comments, I did not see where I said anything about mulching, you have me confused with someone else.

I do not use a hoe, I use a hand fork, and get on my knees to get the roots of the weeds out, all a hoe will do is chop a weed and it will grow back in a week.

Experienced gardener? no such thing, a person who wants to enjoy themselves by growing veggies is all that is needed.

  • You did say "mulch"

It's there in your 1st comment.

    I'm not offended because you're not a good gardener.I couldn't care less.

What's offensive is YOU self-righteously calling people "wimps" for using gas equipment....when you actually have NO IDEA what's involved in growing a large garden.

You're just making yourself look more ridiculous with every sentence

It's physically impossible to maintain a large veg. garden by pulling out individual weeds by hand

That guy was right. You are a wanker

  • No biggie, at least I do not waste gas on my garden, nor do I pollute the air of the ground with oil, gas, or exhaust fumes. I enjoy working in my garden for the fun of exercise and watching the fruits of my labor come to life. I enjoy watching the plants grow under each day of life. I enjoy giving as much food away to those who NEED it, not to some other person who has a garden or has lots of money, I am doing what is righteously correct for the LORD, no greed here.

    Yes, I did said mulch.

  • Your an "I'm holier than you" Liar

Claiming moral superiority for growing your(tiny or non-existent) garden without a rototiller.

Meanwhile you buy food commercially produced/shipped using huge amounts of gas & pollution.

    Stop lying

You buy them.Otherwise you'd starve...you're no large scale gardener.Your comments all prove it.

You put others down for using a small gas engine. But in fact your own environmental impact is bigger.

I don't need an arrogant liar to talk to me about the Lord.

  • I never realized how self righteous or ignorant gardeners really are until I started commenting on this video.

I shall refrain from gardening crap on you tube from now, you people are a trip.

You want to see a hypocrite, look in the mirror.

  • That's right, klegster

"If you can't stand the heat..... get out of the kitchen."

If you don't want people getting on your *** the solution is simple.

Stop going around calling people "wimps" .......

people who actually a lot know more about the subject than you.

And when you pretend you're morally superior to others, they're gonna tell you off (soon as they finish laughing).

    ......

  • potassium is a good source of potassium, that's what makes the plant flower/fruit.

  • That's a retarded statement!!

  • hahaha, i know. i meant to say ash from a fire is a good source of potassium. not sure if it has nitrogen.

  • You guys should write off your property as farmland so you don't have to pay taxes on it. =D

  • yea i wish we could write off our land as farm land.. 300 acres and we farm full time.. that's why we farmers are broke

  • Your kidding, your not allowed to write that off?!?!?! That is bloody ridiculous. I know farmers get the short end of the stick (Which is very unfortunate being as how they are about 60% of America's work force) but I have an uncle that owns a beef farm in North Dakota, and I think was having the same issues because he wasn't following some ridiculous green regulation. I'm sorry to hear about that. However, at least if SHTF, you know how to fend for yourself and your family. Most people don't.

  • NO I can't and once they found natural Gas here in PA , our taxes went up x3! The American Farmer makes up less than 1% of the masses. No vote'n power and the keep us on the gov tit cuz we can't sell our own stuff with in the law. I farm as a service to my country. That's all it's good for.

just to put cheep food on the plates of others, it takes mom, dad, my wife and I working full time to just keep the farm. Butif natural gas goes big, maybe we can stay home and just be farmers again.

  • cheap food?

I know farmers don't really get paid very well, since I live on a farm and have lots of farmers around me. However, with subsidies and benefits, farmers do pretty good in long run. It is consumers who are not getting cheap food, we have to pay out the ass for stuff. Grocery stores claimed it was fuel prices, but that is not the case, someone is making lots of money in grocery chain.

  • Front tine tillers are great. However, they are a pain when breaking new ground. In some cases it is easier to do it by hand than with the front tine tiller bouncing everywhere. With already worked land they are good and cheaper than rear tine. But because I constantly work hard land I own a rear tine.

  • Doesn't matter what kind of tiller you use... or do it by hand. Just get out and DO IT!!! You will need that food next winter.

  • I think I`ll stick to using a spade

  • We do Not use Bone Meal-Thats Cruel, we are VEGANS, but PROPS to You for encouraging pEOPLE TO pLANT pOTATOES OR OTHER VEGGIES

  • not everyone is vegan. and bone meal is good for plants.

  • so is CoccoBlock and Neem Seeds even if they Stink!!! :)

  • im not debating that there are other things to use besides bone meal, just that bone meal is good for them and easily gotten because of meat eaters.nothing wrong with it.works great.

  • COOL BUD,,THANKS..I CAN'T WAIT

  • Nonsense

that tiller takes a lot more work to handle than a rear tine tiller

My rear tine tiller digs in and there is not work on the operater at all even the wheels are driven

also front tine tillers jump up and down

rear tine dig in you do not push on them

your information is biased on this video

  • dave777blaster - I disagree - I have also used front and rear tine tillers, and I prefer front tine.

  • YEAA ,,YOU CAN MAKE THAT FRON TINE WORK

  • @survivalistboards my rear tine tiller is so easy to use.. before a had a front tine tiller and that thing would jump and run you to death.and with a rear tine tiller the wheels are pulling and mine digs in so good i love the rear tine tiller. get a rear tine tiller man

  • yeah beneath a canopy isn't ideal veggie growing real estate

  • BTW it doesnt seem like that are is a great are to plant with all the shade.

  • I just harvested my sweet potatoes about two days ago. I got my plants from the sweet potatoes left over from my gp sweet potatoe pie (the potatoes that I used were uncooked of course). I soaked them in water for a few days and got around 5 plants per potato. Had so many I didn't know what to do. I got around a bushel and a half worth eating and around 3 bushels total. Didn't give them enough time I think

  • You should not mix Organic Fertilizers with Chemical Fertz. Because Organic Fertilizers work by Microbiology breaking down the Manure into something the plant can uptake. And if you use the Chemical fertz it will kill the Microherd / microbiological life and fungus that help organic fertz.

  • I've been told the tiller kills all the worms. Anyone know if this is true or not?

  • Well that makes sense. Of course if you cut a worm in half it will regenerate and then there will be two worms :D

  • hey kev, you shouldn't need to add any wood ash unless you've got acidic soil (do you have acidic soil in eastern Texas?). if your soil is alkaline then all you're doing is driving up the pH to an unnecessarily high level, which may impede crop growth and yield.

  • Have you seen my bar-b-q videos? I have a big wood burning smoker / bar-b-q pit. Instead of throwing the ash away, I add it to the garden.

  • @survivalistboards If you have any conifers near there the ash will work well but pacific coast is right, maybe find a spot in your yard near some pines or something and start mixing it in the soil there?

  • East Texas has alot of Pine Trees that give off alot of pine needles that are highly acidic.

  • Ahh... the magic of the tiller.

  • Thank.I grow potatoes under old hay and it works good. You just have to lift the hay at harvest time and pick the tators off the ground! Try it under old leaves or seaweed too will work.

  • Thank you for the information. You should post some pictures of your potatoes on the website.

  • I have a clip of my potatoes on my channel.I'll have to film the planting of them this spring.I won't be planting till april here.

  • oops didn't read ahead will be looking forward to watching

  • I've made a short video...hope it helps!

  • Thanks Littleredmistic can u use either straw or hay or must it be hay?

  • that sounds interesting how deep do you plant them or are u saying u just cover with hay if so would love to see pics or video

  • I put at least 2 ft thick as this will settle. When the potatoes start to show though the hay, I add more, about the same amount. You can also use dried seaweed if you live in a coastal area. The potatoes will grow on rocks this way!

  • cool thanks alot

  • I will try to get some video.I have planted some now...
