U can count on Amtrak being late at all times.....but it is strange how THEY AMTRAK think they are late...IT seems when you finally get there....UR THERE ON THEIR TIME!!! Amtrak is using other people's tracks and that is why they are constantly late...Freight comes first.....AND I ask this...where are OUR high speed trains?
I've ridden the Southwest Chief and California Zephyr many times. They are often late due to priority dispatching given to freight trains. Personally I like to look at the lateness as getting extra time for free, enjoying the ambiance and scenery for longer than I paid.
@ecw0647 I agree! But many others don't. Have you read Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service--A Year Spent Riding across America by Jim McCommons? Great book.
when i caught the southwest cheif september 7 2007 it was four hyours late from chicago
we boarded the train and sat for four hours underground in the dark station while they messed around with a coach with broken toilets they wouldnt let us get off just kept us sitting there
a couple years ago when i was going on the surfliner to san diego 3 chiefs were late waiting for the southbound and 3 on the northbound surfliner geting off at fullerton. we were ended up on the sb track.
anyone know why on may 14th-15th of this year the southwest chief was late getting to new mexico and it was pulling single levels cars with 4 locos something happend maby equipment problems.
Coming back from Los Angeles to Chicago in January of 2001, I missed the Southwest Chief by five minutes. The ticket agent advised me to take (I think) the Pacific Surfliner. It was a blue double-decker train like the San Joaquin, I remember that much. Anyway, it left L.A. ten minutes after the Chief and got into Fullerton ten minutes before! Thankfully, I made my train. The Surfliner's conductor said I was the talk of the L.A. yard as I hopped across empty train tracks to get to the platform:-)
Poor vehicle looks exhausted...
