I'm glad Garrett Klotz is okay, Westie is one of my favorite hockey players, and I know he wasn't intending for this to happen. Go Monarchs and I hope Klotz is on the fast-track to playing again

philip0148: i'm not so convinced it's a mere matter of imitation, or at least, if it is, it's not simply a matter of imitating pro hockey players. point in case, the schoolyard fight. things get heated in a physical sport. hockey is designed to keep things at boiling point. on occasion there is release - a fight. like a big hit, the fight alters momentum. which as anyone who watches hockey will tell you, is a big thing. by all means, keep blowing your horn. just know that you are wrong.
Many people have jumped all over you pussy anti-fighting fans, but I would just like to make one point....
IF enforcers were ever removed from hockey, it would take MAYBE one week for you bitches to start crying about removing anyone who could throw their weight around, regardless of talent. If enforcers were obsolete, guys like Ruutu, Tucker, Ott, etc. would be running skill players with no consequences, and if you think injuries that occur in fights are bad, you have NO IDEA.
you tree huggers need to get a life, fighting has been in hockey since its started and now because of a few incidents you want it banned, so next time someone takes out your goalie or your best player and the ref doesn't see it u would be ok with that? enforcers are there for a reason and after these things happen people come out of the wood work, like ambulance chasing lawyers to say put a stop to it! get real and please stop watching hockey we don't want you there anyway!
What a joke, removing fighting from hokey is like taking field goals out of football. Not only that they call them "Enforcers" for a reason and taking fighting out of hockey would eliminate a whole class of players in the NHL. Fighting is allowed for reasons like an opposing player taunting your goalie and and to hold dirty hits at bay.
Only in pro hockey are they "Enforcers". In sports the rules are to be enforced by officials. That is the place for it. Dirty hits should be dealt with on the ice by officials and, if necessary, by league officers.
Worst thing I ever see is small kids imitating this non-sense thinking they are emulating pro hockey heroes. Absolute non-sense to suppose the game can not be effectively policed without fighting, goonery. If rules changes are needed, so be it.
Fuck you pussy, go watch soccer or something. Stop trying to change the rules to the game for the people who truly love it. Another thing, kids are not allowed to fight in little league, so who knows maybe fighting will be more or less gone sometime in the future, but for now you can be sick of it and fuck off.
This game was televised (unlike 99% of Phantoms games) on Comcast. Can anyone tell me why there's no decent footage. A friend of mine told me the slo-mo of this fight was brutal.
Remind me again, why exactly do they have their helmets removed? The punches are not going to the head. Had they both kept their helmets on, (or at lease Klotz), the seizure may have been prevented. The punches are aimed for the face, not the helmet protected area. Just leave the helmets on, and things like this can, and will be prevented.
You may not be able to tell from the video, but they wear visors (it's mandatory in the AHL) that cover half of their face, so they remove the buckets out of respect and also for safety because either guy could hurt their hand on the visor or possibly break the visor, which could badly damage a fighters face. The seizure was a freak occurance and was the result of several hard shots on the chin, which would have happened with or without the helmet on.
I did not realize it was mandatory for visors to be worn in the AHL. Even so, you could just come from underneath. Not many people have visors that go really far down (one guy on the Red WIngs does, can't remember his name). I am a sharks fan, and have seen Doug Murray fight several times, sometimes with his visor on, and he still gets hit quite a bit. If it really was form repeated hits to the chin, then it was unavoidable, but if it was hitting his head on the ice, then leave the helmets on.
I agree, especially after the recent death of a player who hit his head on the ice, but in order for the AHL to penalize helmet removal, they would have to make visors optional again. Your a Sharks fan, how many times have you seen Shelley remove his helmet before a fight? NHL enforcers dont take their helmets off because they dont wear visors, but they often try to remove their opponents helmet during the fight. The league may need to change this, nobody wants to see a player seriously injured.
I thought they were optional in both leagues (NHL and AHL), but obviously not. It makes sense to wear a visor regardless of what your status on the team is, as it protects your face from getting hit by the puck, but I agree, if you are an enforcer, you should not have to wear a visor, because of incidents like this. I believe the recent death of a player you are referring to is the death of a player in a senior league. That's completely different. His body is more sensitive to this type of thing
The player (Don Sanderson) was 21 years old, the whole "senior league" thing can be confusing. He hit his head on the ice during a fight and went into a coma for a while before he passed away. The point is that this can happen to anyone, at any time, and as much of a fight fan as I am, something has to be done. Watching what happened to Klotz live on TV was horrible enough, I cant imagine seeing someone actually die in a game.
Really, he was only 21? My friend told me he was 61...I agree that it can happen to anyone, but I thought he was a lot older. I agree with you 100%. Something needs to be done about it.
some guys who fight are nice dudes off the ice. but many, not a few, have problems with drugs, alcohol, are jerks, etc...
as for them being involved with charity...teams set that up for public relations. yeah, im sure some guys care, but acknowledge it for what it is...public relations to help sell tickets.
AND if people think fighting changes momentum..
1. phantoms won this game despite klotz getting KO'd.
2. if fighting is important to momentum, then why so little of it in playoffs?
fighting can change a game at any moment, obviously like everything else there are exceptions. That being said, the playoffs, players are thrown out for fighting because the league knows there would be far more fights if they weren't. That being said, after each whistle during the playoffs there is often a scuffle. Fighting is an important part of the greatest game on earth you can't deny it one of it's oldest rules instead of a cheap shot slash to the head, why not drop the gloves and settle it
I would argue that Olympic hockey and playoff hockey is the best showcase of the game. Its best played agressive, fast and with great skill. I`m not sure whether fighting adds to the game or takes away from it but I`d prefer they experimented in the AHL with eliminating fights. What do they have to lose.
Well, I don't think Westgarth (or the great majority of other fighters in leagues) are intentionally going out there to injure anyone. As I said before, the act of fighting is usually done in defense of a teammate or a method to change momentum in a game. Quite often these guys know each other and respect each other tremendously and will even pat each other on the head after a good scrap. Fighting has always been a very misuderstood aspect of the game by a few people.
sucks for klotz hope he's better people didnt know what the hell was going on seeing he had some great shots in the fight and then he was just out of it
Canman, I think everyone gets excited by good, skillful hockey. However, fighting does effect what happens on the ice. Ask anyone who has played the game. Fighting has been in the game and when used correctly can be an effective tool in changing momentum, protecting teammates, and in some cases intimidation. The guys who fight for their teams are quite often the most respected guys on the team. Quite often they're also the guys who are the most involved in the community.
I agree that seeing someone win a fight can rev up a team and the crowd. But I don't think intentionally injuring someone, potentially fatally is worth that.
I don't want to get into a major debate with you on this but they've even had documentaries on some of the toughest, meanest enforcers in the NHL and even their teammates talk about how beloved these guys are and how gentle they are outside of the rink. They also detailed how involved these guys are with charities, disabled kids and much more. To label all of them as feared and not respected is an insult.
haha are u joking? crosby can't fight. In his recent one, he just jumped the guy off the faceoff and threw him around by the jersey before he cud even drop the gloves. id like to see him get in a standoff fight like the real fights. He he ever wins one of them, then maybe u have a point...but dont hold ur breath
in a game of hits goals and plays u need a fight or 2... its the game of hockey... without fighting or enforcement players show other players no respect.. this just keeps people in check and allow the so called greastest players to do there thing
Only total douchebags think fighting is a "part" of hockey. The greatest players, they score or save with speed and skill--not waste quality ice time clobbering with heir fists.
Um dumb ass any hockey expert fighting is apart of the game, Gordie Howe he fought like every night ever hear of the Gordie Howe hat trick? He was one of the best ever. messier would fight, all of them fight, that statement you just made is so ignorant . and you clearly do not watch enough hockey. Cause a lot of the stars today fight, you just think of cry baby Crosby or obitchkin. What about Iginla? Phaneuf? Richards? Pronger? it is apart of a game and always will be.
crosby was in 2 fights in his nhl career and was the dominate force in both..sure he screams for penalties but thats part of his style of play. The only reason he isnt in more fights is because he is the most important player on the team and Micheal Therrien cant risk losing his star player, so he sends people like gonchar to do the dirty work...nothing wrong with that
If you don't know what you are talking about then don't comment. #1 fighting is a part of hockey, it's an intense game. #2 this is the AHL these players are getting less than $100k/yr. #3 want to set a good 'example'? Learn how to spell

first of all klotz was tooling the guy and would have won would he not have got caught up in the boards. he put his hand down to stop himself from going over. anyone who says fighting should be banned is an idiot. do not bring up other sports you stupid f&*%& because its irrelevant. hockey isnt like other sports. ice is a big giveaway. what they do in other sports does not matter. thirdly klotz is ready to go now. hell be back rite after all star break
having fighting allow protects your players that cant protect them selves you thin datsyuk can protect self if he gets hit from behind thats when detroit sends out big lidstrom nd f=goes and teaches a guy a lesson and another thing is its an energy booster they have to choice to fight they dont have to. They should blame them selves for getting their ass handed to them. well thats all im going to say pce out keep fighting in the game!!!!!!1
your team is down by 1 and being terribly outplayed. you get in a fight and win. this then pumps up your team with adrenaline from seeing a fight. your team than has the energy to generate better scoring chances and in turn score a goal. not only that but if someone takes a cheap shot at one of your star players you need to defend him, so what better way than fighting.
In defense of the sport of hockey, its quite a lot of fun to play. The fighting thats allowed is not. Its time to remove it. No other sport ALLOWS fighting to go on unless its boxing or UFC stuff. I hope this player recovers fully from this incident. Horrible.
hockey is such a retarded sport, why would they even allow fighting? i mean u dont see other major sports that allow fighting (basketball, baseball, football, soccer). It doesn't make any sense, but it's still fun to watch someone get knocked out tho... hehe
how do u call hockey a retarded sport and say that baseball is a sport in the same sentence...?hockey is a great sport and fighting isnt needed but its ... most of the time a choice...maybe baseball need to allow fight because it kind of suck...basketball got his thing with player that think show off first hockey got fite football got all those tiny fite soccer got his luckyness and whats left for baseball...? nothing so please dont say hockey isnt a great sport because hockey=passion...
true, i dont watch baseball, i m just saying its retarded to allow fighting in the sport.... i like hockey, but i just never knew why they allowed fighting.
It's only a matter of time before someone gets killed as a result of a hockey fight. Sure, fighting is intense, but it just isn't a needed part of the game.
Need proof? Look at what what happens during the playoffs, when hockey really matters. There is almost zero fighting, and quite often it's some of the best hockey.
First of all, without fighting, fags like ott and avery would be eliminating star players without worrying about getting beaten up. 2nd of all, it gets the team and crowd pumped up. 3rd of all, it builds respect for you. so try saying we dont need fighting again, biatch
I do not appreciate being called stupid, and biatch. That doesn't add anything to your argument. You're no better than Sean Avery.
The league can suspend players like Ott and Avery. Secondly, I get excited by good, skillfull hockey. Fighting does not affect what happens on the scoreboard- it is not a part of the game. Thirdly, fighting someone is not a proper way to gain respect. How about having skill? That's a better way. Players who put the puck in the net are respected more than goons.
I remember that now that you mention it. How tragic.
I think fighting hurts the image of the game. If we want hockey to grow as a sport in other countries, fighting has to be abolished. You drop the gloves, you get fined or suspended or both.
Look at Olympic hockey- some of the most eciting hockey ever. No fighting, nobody gets knocked into convulsions or dies, and players are able to show their skill.
fighing makes the game more exciting, besides a big hit isnt always enough to get a team going, how often hasnt it happend where a fight sparked a team
yeah but ive seen so many hockey fights and been in enough hockey fights to know that a lot of the time its too guys trying to spark their teams, their not angry at each other, granted a lot of fights are started out of anger, but besides a few cases people arent often injured. maybe we should ban checking to and maybe shots that r too hard, cuz ppl are hurt by that as well
these guys trying 2 send a message ya right ...look like ufc out there no respect between enforcers just allmeat , the refs should have jumped in being by the boards like that!!
when these incidents become the norm rather than the exception, then yeah, we should do something about it.
but realistically, it averages out to maybe 2 or 3 incidents where somebody gets seriously hurt in a year, in all levels of pro and major junior hockey. this is a freak year, people. calm down.
as tiger williams once put it (after breaking both orbital bones) "every cowboy has his day, and today just wasn't mine". they're grown men, they know the risks, let them face the consequences.
fighting is a part of the sport, for those saying it isnt you must be retarded.
If it wasnt then the individuals wouldnt just merely get a 5 minute penalty. they'd be banned for a number of games with the possibility of having charges pressed against them just like any other sport.
agree if there was no fighting aloud players would just be using there sticks as a weapon ,slashes, buttends of stick, high stickin & check from behinds....now thats cheap !
no u shut up. fighting is not part of hockey. they just wanna be tough fucks so they punch it out by holding eachothers jerseys and fighting like bitches. if they actually wanna brawl take it off the fuckin ice like men. play hockey. not fight.
shut up. hockey is a game, fighting is a part of it, like boxing or mma, or smashing someone in like they do in football. we love it, you can go watch golfing or something.
lmao your pathetic. you think by you saying that fighting will be gone by in 5 years, lmao ya fucking right bud. fighting is a natural part of hockey, as is every other sport that allows contact.
moi je suis contre la Baggare au HOckey mineur au quebec.. mais . mais pour les adults je ne suis pas contre . ce un risque a chaque fois que les joueurs laisse tombé les gants
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
there shouldn't be fighting in the NHL. All the real sports basketball, Soccer and Baseball don't have fighting and they are way better than the NHL. The NHL and hockey is for big pussies who can't handle a real sport so they get into a sport that requires no actual skill. Go Bruins Go
Your a douche. You saying the NHL is for pussys but your cheering on the Bruins. I think your the pussy, your just to scared to get into a fight. GO BEARS, & CAPS!!
Haha. This is the mindset of people that watch too much PTI. Hockey is faster, more exciting and requires much more skill to play than any other major sport. Stick to basketball my friend. Those jump shots and slam dunks really are something else - lol.
Imbecile. If you knew anything you would know that Hockey and Lacrosse are the only sports that incorporate every facet of athleticism. If Hockey is for "pussies" why do you have a team that you root for? Stick to your Baseball. Oh yeah thats a real sport. Is it cool for a pitcher to throw a 100 mph fastball at someone's head. Stick to what you know. If you think that Baseball is a REAL sport, Hockey is way too intricate for you.
Klotz is a warrior, im glad hes ok. I saw some tv footage showing his eyes rolled into the back of his head while he was shaking, luckily i heard earlier that he was ok, otherwise i woulda lost it.
i was there and it was nuts. i could see him shaking and everything. it was pretty scary. he's fine though, i saw on sportsrise that he was okay and was actually watching the third period on tv. good thing he was ok. i couldnt believe how physical the game was still after that happened
man i fuckin fight n hockey n now i dont even want to any more as soon as i saw this i was like oh shit my fav player is down...it was disturbing but im glad he alright,
your a fucking idiot...you go fucking stand on two blades 1 eights of an inch thick and get fucking ragged on by a man that strong see if you keep your balance...gutless puke he is the one fighting..your the one beaking him on youtube..tough
Ugh. I saw it live and hope I never have to see anything like it again. This vid isn't even the angle shown on TV. This game was on CSN Philly, so I am sure more detailed videos will be popping up. It is easier to watch now that you know he is ok, but at the time it was just plain scary.

haha are u joking? crosby can't fight.

I dont know that much about hockey but pls some tell me.. is it normal to fight in this game ? I mean you can fight no rules ?
kaplanahmet 3 years ago
fighting leads to penalties, but it take 2 to fight so both go the the penalty box
noma753 3 years ago
Only total douchebags think fighting is a "part" of hockey. The greatest players, they score or save with speed and skill--not waste quality ice time clobbering with heir fists.
therealcharismatron 3 years ago
The greatest players are kept safe on the ice by enforcers...any hockey fan knows that...you must be a tard.
jplett17 3 years ago
Um dumb ass any hockey expert fighting is apart of the game, Gordie Howe he fought like every night ever hear of the Gordie Howe hat trick? He was one of the best ever. messier would fight, all of them fight, that statement you just made is so ignorant . and you clearly do not watch enough hockey. Cause a lot of the stars today fight, you just think of cry baby Crosby or obitchkin. What about Iginla? Phaneuf? Richards? Pronger? it is apart of a game and always will be.
jbizzle2326 3 years ago
crosby was in 2 fights in his nhl career and was the dominate force in both..sure he screams for penalties but thats part of his style of play.

I never understood why u wait for puck to drop. you wanna hit a guy go over and hit him.
loukopoa 3 years ago 2
Because the off-play time is generally considered a ceasefire. They dont go hunting eachother down after the game either...Generally! :)
TheSketchedOne 3 years ago
loukopoa, the reason is if you don't wait for the puck to drop before fighting, you'll get a game misconduct as well...
DN64 3 years ago
probably legal aspects behind it.
if you hit someone before the game has started it might be assault....im not to sure
brandonadrew 3 years ago
first of all klotz was tooling the guy and would have won would he not have got caught up in the boards. he put his hand down to stop himself from going over. anyone who says fighting should be banned is an idiot. do not bring up other sports you stupid f&*%& because its irrelevant. hockey isnt like other sports. ice is a big giveaway. what they do in other sports does not matter. thirdly klotz is ready to go now. hell be back rite after all star break

having fighting allow protects your players that cant protect them selves you thin datsyuk can protect self if he gets hit from behind thats when detroit sends out big lidstrom nd f=goes and teaches a guy a lesson and another thing is its an energy booster they have to choice to fight they dont have to. They should blame them selves for getting their ass handed to them. well thats all im going to say pce out keep fighting in the game!!!!!!1
KeepUp211 3 years ago
lindstrom has never fought in his entire career. And Detroit is the worst enforcing team in the league.
Hamburglur21 3 years ago
lets see why fighting is allowed.......
your team is down by 1 and being terribly outplayed. you get in a fight and win. this then pumps up your team with adrenaline from seeing a fight. your team than has the energy to generate better scoring chances and in turn score a goal. not only that but if someone takes a cheap shot at one of your star players you need to defend him, so what better way than fighting.
brandonadrew 3 years ago
i think its a tie
dhesaka180 3 years ago
In defense of the sport of hockey, its quite a lot of fun to play. The fighting thats allowed is not. Its time to remove it. No other sport ALLOWS fighting to go on unless its boxing or UFC stuff. I hope this player recovers fully from this incident. Horrible.

I'm sure they had a reason. They just had to wait for the puck to drop before they could start to fight.
slacker71 3 years ago
hockey is such a retarded sport, why would they even allow fighting? i mean u dont see other major sports that allow fighting (basketball, baseball, football, soccer). It doesn't make any sense, but it's still fun to watch someone get knocked out tho... hehe
fugor1103 3 years ago
how do u call hockey a retarded sport and say that baseball is a sport in the same sentence...?hockey is a great sport and fighting isnt needed but its ... most of the time a choice...maybe baseball need to allow fight because it kind of suck...basketball got his thing with player that think show off first hockey got fite football got all those tiny fite soccer got his luckyness and whats left for baseball...? nothing so please dont say hockey isnt a great sport because hockey=passion...
DIVAD291 3 years ago
true, i dont watch baseball, i m just saying its retarded to allow fighting in the sport.... i like hockey, but i just never knew why they allowed fighting.
fugor1103 3 years ago
GO BRUINS! but why exactly were they fighting? lol
letspaint 3 years ago
is this fake?
dchin490 3 years ago
It's only a matter of time before someone gets killed as a result of a hockey fight. Sure, fighting is intense, but it just isn't a needed part of the game.
Need proof? Look at what what happens during the playoffs, when hockey really matters. There is almost zero fighting, and quite often it's some of the best hockey.
We can do without this.
Canman99 3 years ago
are u stupid? do you even know what hockey is?
First of all, without fighting, fags like ott and avery would be eliminating star players without worrying about getting beaten up. 2nd of all, it gets the team and crowd pumped up. 3rd of all, it builds respect for you. so try saying we dont need fighting again, biatch
and GO BRUINS
amn22492 3 years ago
FUCK BRUINS, GO CANADIANS!!!!!!!
alexbballboy 3 years ago
I do not appreciate being called stupid, and biatch. That doesn't add anything to your argument. You're no better than Sean Avery.
The league can suspend players like Ott and Avery. Secondly, I get excited by good, skillfull hockey. Fighting does not affect what happens on the scoreboard- it is not a part of the game. Thirdly, fighting someone is not a proper way to gain respect. How about having skill? That's a better way. Players who put the puck in the net are respected more than goons.
Canman99 3 years ago
Agreed! By the way, Don Sanderson, a senior player from Witby, Ontario died in a coma from a hockey fight just last month
riderfanszmul 3 years ago
I remember that now that you mention it. How tragic.
I think fighting hurts the image of the game. If we want hockey to grow as a sport in other countries, fighting has to be abolished. You drop the gloves, you get fined or suspended or both.
Look at Olympic hockey- some of the most eciting hockey ever. No fighting, nobody gets knocked into convulsions or dies, and players are able to show their skill.
Canman99 3 years ago
fighing makes the game more exciting, besides a big hit isnt always enough to get a team going, how often hasnt it happend where a fight sparked a team
nobsjr1 3 years ago
I agree with you that a fight can be exciting. Again, I don't think intentionally injuring someone, potentially fatally is worth that.
Canman99 3 years ago
yeah but ive seen so many hockey fights and been in enough hockey fights to know that a lot of the time its too guys trying to spark their teams, their not angry at each other, granted a lot of fights are started out of anger, but besides a few cases people arent often injured. maybe we should ban checking to and maybe shots that r too hard, cuz ppl are hurt by that as well

rooche14 3 years ago
when these incidents become the norm rather than the exception, then yeah, we should do something about it.
but realistically, it averages out to maybe 2 or 3 incidents where somebody gets seriously hurt in a year, in all levels of pro and major junior hockey. this is a freak year, people. calm down.
as tiger williams once put it (after breaking both orbital bones) "every cowboy has his day, and today just wasn't mine". they're grown men, they know the risks, let them face the consequences.
hatethismusic 3 years ago
fighting is a part of the sport, for those saying it isnt you must be retarded.
If it wasnt then the individuals wouldnt just merely get a 5 minute penalty. they'd be banned for a number of games with the possibility of having charges pressed against them just like any other sport.
franchica 3 years ago 2
agree if there was no fighting aloud players would just be using there sticks as a weapon ,slashes, buttends of stick, high stickin & check from behinds....now thats cheap !

there shouldn't be fighting in the NHL. All the real sports basketball, Soccer and Baseball don't have fighting and they are way better than the NHL. The NHL and hockey is for big pussies who can't handle a real sport so they get into a sport that requires no actual skill. Go Bruins Go
85m85 3 years ago
Your a douche. You saying the NHL is for pussys but your cheering on the Bruins. I think your the pussy, your just to scared to get into a fight. GO BEARS, & CAPS!!
HersheyBearsAHL 3 years ago
Haha. This is the mindset of people that watch too much PTI. Hockey is faster, more exciting and requires much more skill to play than any other major sport. Stick to basketball my friend. Those jump shots and slam dunks really are something else - lol.
Songburst23 3 years ago 3

If it happens on the street it's a criminal offence called an assault.
If it happens on the ice, it's a five-minute penalty.
Where's the logic in that?
