I am a dairy farmer. supposedly we are cruel and horrible people who torture cows to get milk. Spend a week on a farm and you would see different. the reason a lot of the video evidence can't be used is that it's illegally acquired. it's illegal to take video in a business without that's business' approval and in this case, they didn't have the approval and it was removed from the investigation.
as for people complaining about horse meat, when done properly, they are put down the same way a vet would put it down, with a captive bolt gun. so the animal isn't feeling anything through this process if done properly. learn before criticizing
A simple solution is to mandate that live video cameras are to be installed and those live feeds made available on websites set up for the slaughterhouses. With people watching every move, the workers will be more careful to do their jobs correctly. And if those camera feeds should stop, the processing should be suspended until the cameras are back online.There should be government monitoring of those feeds at all times.
I grew up around horses & rode my uncle's. I have wanted a horse all my life. I never had enough property to have one, or the money to maintain it, so it breaks my heart to see beautiful, healthy horses lined up for slaughter. I would take one in an instant if I could...what a horrible shame. When my uncle got tired of his horses he sent them to an auction house for slaughter. They told me someone nice bought them but I knew better. >:0(

This is just plain sick. My aunt recently lost her beautiful horse Bart. He lived a good 29 years. He had to be put down because his digestive system had failed, and he was suffering. How did she kill him? HUMANELY. The vet injected poison, and he died a nice, painless death. It is just sick that they treat horses like this.

Honestly I am not against HUMANE slaughter. notice I said Humane. Horse meat is eaten in other parts of the world and there are too many horses in America. This is just plain sick. My aunt recently lost her beautiful horse Bart. He lived a good 29 years. He had to be put down because his digestive system had failed, and he was suffering. How did she kill him? HUMANELY. The vet injected poison, and he died a nice, painless death. It is just sick that they treat horses like this.

The answer is simple in the kill pen give it one needle use the meat for animals that stupid humans keep locked up in cages. And only kill old, cripple, sick horses. Only use the meat for Lions, etc. Not humans horse meat is not made for humans to eat. I know what chemicals are in the wormers and it will get to your liver, kidneys. They cannot feel boredom, doom, etc. Also, NO they do not know what's going on. At most they only know that other horses are being killed, and that's being generous. Abolish this slaughter, why not put these horses or cattle out on open range to die in dignity as they should, this sickens me to no end, I grew up with horses they have feelings like dogs , cats , birds, dolphins, whales, in fact all animals have a soul as far as I am concerned, for God has told of a story about a sparrow when it falls.

@dnnylee Watch a documentary on Dr. Temple. Its titled The woman who thinks like a cow. Its easy to find and very informative. She revolutionized the industry and has made humane slaughter more possible.

Killing isn't pretty. Horses are bright enough to know it's coming and probably would prefer to die somewhere else by some other means. No one seems to have a say about being born or dying. Maybe i'm wrong about that.. People are adverse/biased/ sided. and like to keep the dark side enshouded or smoked.

Very upsetting. The Canadian government needs to get off its ass and STOP the slaughtering of horses for food (AND the clubbing of seals for fur). Inhumane or even humane, the practice needs to end immediately. I love Canada & its people, but this is unacceptable.

@dafttool On a side note though, Templeton's suggestion of cameras monitored by a third party is an excellent suggestion. Also, seeing her here, its amazing how well Claire Danes nailed her portrayal in that movie about her this past year.
