Hehe, last time I fought the red man the poor guy charged in and went for my "asp", I promptly delivered my knee squarely into his groin. I felt pretty bad, I meant to connect with his stomach, but his face was priceless--needless to say, I was the next "volunteer" in the suit.
Right on, I did SF for 11 years (1/2 of that K9). I recently separated and am now a CTR, still working with the career field. Personally I prefer Manadnock over ASP, but just my preference. However, I found PPCT impact weapons (with any brand) training to be vastly more enjoyable than the ASP training plan.
Either way...agreed... those within the field who are actually doing LE should be extremely proficient with their core tasks to include the baton.
It's funny to see the EST focusing so much attention on baton training. If EST is needed, it's likely gone way beyond impact weapons. That said, the yearly certification is obviously necessary.
@jakkd07 Your comment is correct, however being that the EST members are full time Security FOrces members the ASP baton is a key weapon in the force continuim, and they must be certified on it as a secondary use of force tool. In this case I was cllose to PCS'ing and promised them I would certify them before i left on my next assingment. Thanks again for your observations.
@nomadsboots--Okay, so this was just an annual cert or re-cert. I realize that EST is not an actual AFSC. I thought for a second it was EST focusing on ASP the way Ravens do. Although it actually makes sense for Ravens as they are far more likely to use an ASP vs. a firearm. While on the flip side, if EST is called out, they are likely to be wielding firearms vs. impact weapons etc. Anyway, good vid., and I understand now that you explained.
@jakkd07 10-4 on the annual Cert.. Ravens do work harder on the ASP, But I believe all Cops should be proficient with the ASP, I have been an instructor since 2001, and I prefer the ASP over other impact weapons. I loved begin a Security Forces member I did it for 24 years and some change. Thanks Again.
