I'm just wondering if Antony has Parkinson's or some sort of neurological condition that makes him move like that. My brother died from Parkinson's, so it's by no means a criticism. Whatever it is, I hope he's OK.
@bckm54 that comment just makes you sound like an ignorant dick. He sings with his diaphragm (sp?) so he moves around like an opera singer does to get his voice to do those things. Do some fucking reading once in a while.
@xplodetrain He's from antony and the johnsons. Lou Reed sort of saw his talent and decided to work with him on a album. You should check out i'm a bird now, a LP from Antony. It's about transsexuality... That sounds wierd but Antony is a strange soul. He poses himself alot like a women. I hope you'll enjoy it! It's a great artist.
Every time I see this clip I'm just riveted to the screen. Antony is so delicate with this song and handles it with such care. I feel like Lou at the end - totally moved. Brilliant.
Not to diminish the version on "The Velvet Underground" album and Doug Yule but...
Antony's amazing vocal, Lou Reed's restrained chorus, the simple, poignant arrangement and the outro make this version otherworldly. Lou Reed gets it. He understands. That's enough for me.
Damn, but this is beautiful. Thanks for posting it. It's powerful to see Lou so moved at the end -- and rightly so, because Antony makes this a transcendent version of a great song.
Immense. It really is priceless look of respect, gratitude and admiration for Lou at the end. It is as if her eyes told him: "Thanks for dropping the song into the stratosphere ..." A single voice, with an amount of almost unbelievable emotional nuances.
Antony can sing anything, the difference is the human quality of his voice, the emotion. Just see the face of Lou Reed's eternal gratitude at the end. It's like saying: "Thank you, and I dreamed, I have sung thus be able ..."
I really like Antony's singing in this. Captures the mood of the song better, though I must say the rhythm he is rocking back and forth with doesn't quite fit anything I was hearing ;)
I see him rock like that to just about everything he sings. I think its just a his way. Doesnt change the fact he has an amazing voice. First saw him sing "if it be your will" for a Lenard Cohen tribute. Check it out. He is amazing
i get goosebumps when i see lou appreciating athonys contribution at the end, its such a moving performance, wow. legend lou amazed by his 1000+ times performed own song thanks to that combo on stage. look how he always is in full control of every musician whilst playing. i salute, its a masterpiece
@theMAXX81 Lou is not easy to please, and sometimes comes across as quite difficult, but here he really was moved by Antony's performance. It is truly brilliant, and clearly Lou was overwhelmed by it! Great performance!
One of my favourite VU songs given a new take with the wonderful Antony, a voice so beautiful I do believe I hear the sound of grown men weeping. Oh, that's me!:) Just a lovely version of this classic song!
I first saw this in a cinema a year ago and all I could tell myself was "must not break into hysterical sobbing". Lou's expression towards the end of the song speaks volumes and my guess is he shed a tear, too. Freakishly emotional moment and the high point of that concert, imo.
damn, as a lou reed fan I didn't know about his collaboration with anthony, it's the real lou this, he left me stunned again..... and anthony you're beautiful too!
This is another great example of Lou leaving his thumb print on the ever evolving music world. Antony is beautifully haunting, giving me chills and making tears come to my eyes once again. Thanks for posting this.
antony's vocals eclipse lou's in terms of technical ability, but there is something undeniable and unexplainable, that just draws you to lou reeds voice.
Wouldn´t it be great if Lou decided to just write the songs, instead of singing them...? And don´t give me that "unique voice" crap, the man just can´t sing!!!
The discussion about Lou Reeds voice or singing style is very interesting. To me he is one of the greatest singers, and above all voices in the world. To me there is beauty and true and undeniable character in it. To me rock n roll singing has nothing to do with technique, and everything to do with personality. Then again, I saw Lou live in 1974, have always loved him and probably will always, his singing is beautiful, and like his words - true.
saw Lou on the Berlin tour- the bass player sang one half of Satelite of love- perfect, soaring, powerful vocal-amazing.... the audience all laughed when Lou came to the mike- he grinned, looked at the bass player in a sort of amused awe and then sang. i love Lou, but always felt he couldn't sing. Changed my mind at that point... he can't hit half the notes, but he is a great singer... hard to put your finger on what makes him great- but whatever the elusive X factor is, he has it
@martinirosen I agree with you. Anyone else's voice on any of the VU studio albums would've changed sooo much with what I appreciate about the VU. Lou does a particularly bad job on this song.
Got to agree with you. His pitch might not be perfect but, like Dylan, he's got his own phrasing and intonations, and I prefer that. Perfection is imperfection, and vice versa.
Lou is 66 now. He trully HAD one of the most unique voices I've ever heard. Just listen to some of his older solo albums, or his word on the Velvet Underground.
His voice has deteriorated, maybe more than other amazing voices in their 60's and 70's: Mick Jagger, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan.
you can't say their voices have deteriorated over the years, i'd say jim morrison's voice also changed 180 degrees, but i wouldn't call it deterioration, life is a learning process, you never stop learning, and the more you know the more you evolve, so does the body, the mind and the voice, mirror of the inside, they were all giants and they still are
Also, this song is not the best for Lou's voice (which I love). It isn't even sung by him in the studio version, Doug Yule does it. It is so in this song as in others, like I'll Be Your Mirror, Oh Sweet Nothing, After Hours, I'm sticking With You...
I saw this film a week ago and was so moved by it. Everyone knew what a momentous occasion it was for this concert to be happening and it was performances like this video that truly made the documentary an epic.
