I was frankly surprised when Brits embraced Subo so quickly with what was only a fair rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. Ruthie Henshall has owned that song for years and she gets only a passing nod and a ho-hum. Aftering listening to Ruthie at the TAC, why would anyone pay any attention to Subo? Ruthie is British; the TAC was British.; Subo is not even English. We americans can be excused for being idiots. Most of us have never even heard of of Les Mis. Why is Subo so popular?
@Ardalla555 I agree with you about Ruthie Henshall. I saw her in Les Mis way back in the early 1990s at the Palace Theatre and she was terrific. SuBo is a very ordinary singer by West End standards. Her popularity stems from who she is rather than how good a singer she is. At her best she is a "belter" with precious little else on offer, and there is no shortage of those about. I must point out that Scotland is part of Great Britain so SuBo is british.

I speak from experience, having had a professional musical training and being married to a woman with a Guildhall School of Music training as a performer. As for writing paragraphs, I suppose that someone with your limited knowledge of what you speak, would be content with "text speak". No I am certainly not saying KJ is better than Callas. There are many experts on the singing voice who have said that Callas did not have the best soprano voice of her era, but she was probably the very best interpreter of some of the huge opera roles that she played. K J is a mezzo and also not an opera singer as such. She does perform operatic arias on the concert platform but she is more accurately described as a classical singer. As is Faryl.

Lanza had a good voice but he never performed in an opera simply because his voice lacked the training to give it the stamina to sustain a performance. Elvis was a pop singer, apart from regular voice execises to keep if in trim, no serious vocal training needed. As for Lanza and Presley being the greatest of the century, there are too many better predecessors to mention. As for SuBo the number of YT hits may make you famous but it does not make you a great singer.
(continued) SuBo has failed to appear at at least four venues on the BGT Live Tour. She has been reported as behaving very oddly at times and screaming for her pet cat. She was recently sent back to London from the tour because of concerns over her health. Hence my remarks about her not being able to stand the pace of the tour seem to be vindicated. I am not gloating over this; just stating things as they are. There are about ten venues to go. Can she she stand the pressure? who knows?

Sadly SuBo is a two song middle aged woman who is finding it impossible to complete an easy two week tour of the UK with the BGT Live show. Watch Faryl and Katherine in thier performances on YT. You will soon see who the true stars are. SuBo is a celeb, not a star.

I can hear vastly superior singers than SuBo understudying in the West End and performing in 8 shows a week. SuBo is no new Bassey, Shelton, Streisand, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Garland, Minelli, Day or Linda Eder. She is where she is because people are surprised that a fat, ugly middle aged woman with a screw loose can actually sing in tune. She is not great as folk like to kid themselves that she is.

For example, people in many rural communities like Cornwall and Devon in England pronounce "water" just like Americans sounding the "er" at the end. And to acejack23, the closest accent to English from a few hundred years ago is actually the American accent. Trash, candy, garbage, fall etc which seem like American words but are actually words that died out in England.

Yes. The upper-class English accent is heavily influenced by French. The English upper-class have always spoken french since Norman times. But it was fashionable in the Edwardian Era, which isn't that long ago to have a french accent with the established elite. The average English person does not speak like this. And neither did the average English settlers of America. It's the reason why we spell "color" like "colour" and why we have so many french expressions like "deja vu".
zpik3, Olde English existed between the 5th to 12th century, and you would be able to understand them. Modern English has been in existance since 1500s. So yes. You would be able to talk to someone in English over 400 years ago and EASILY understand them. So don't be giving history lesssons out when you know very little. English as we know it today evolved from England. American-English is hardly a different language, infact it's closer to the English that was spoken in ENGLAND.
My point is that languages always evolve. And trying to say that the English in England is any truer than the English from America is silly. As the difference between modern English and "olde English" is probably just as large as the differences between "English" and "American English". And perhaps you would be able to understand the old language, I'm no expert, but it would be very very different from the English of today.
If modern English is 400 years old, and the "old English" disappeared around the 12th century (900 years ago) then wouldn't that all but agree with my point of the old English being dead and gone?

Olde English, Middle-English, and Modern English ALL originate from England. American-English is hardly different from the English spoken in England before their independence INFACT it's closer than that of the English spoken today in England.

Shakespear made up like half the words in the modern English, words that didn't exist before. If just ONE PERSON can change a language this much, then how much must it not have changed over the 900 years you mentioned?
As an example I turn to Swedish, the oldest original form of Swedish in existence today is an obscure dialect spoken by a few thousand people in Finland (of all places)
And even the people living just a hundred kilometers outside of the borders of "Närpes" (as the place is called) have no fucking clue as to what the hell they are saying.
I can't say which of English or Swedish is older, but I CAN say that the dialect of "Närpes" is younger than 900 years. So if Swedish has undergone such large changes (without the help of shakespear) then so must the English language.

To this day there are people that ignore the rules and language will evolve, i.e. the black vernacular. No I am certainly not saying KJ is better than Callas. There are many experts on the singing voice who have said that Callas did not have the best soprano voice of her era, but she was probably the very best interpreter of some of the huge opera roles that she played. K J is a mezzo and also not an opera singer as such. She does perform operatic arias on the concert platform but she is more accurately described as a classical singer. As is Faryl.

Lanza had a good voice but he never performed in an opera simply because his voice lacked the training to give it the stamina to sustain a performance. Elvis was a pop singer, apart from regular voice execises to keep if in trim, no serious vocal training needed. As for Lanza and Presley being the greatest of the century, there are too many better predecessors to mention. As for SuBo the number of YT hits may make you famous but it does not make you a great singer.

(continued) SuBo has failed to appear at at least four venues on the BGT Live Tour. She has been reported as behaving very oddly at times and screaming for her pet cat. She was recently sent back to London from the tour because of concerns over her health. Hence my remarks about her not being able to stand the pace of the tour seem to be vindicated. I am not gloating over this; just stating things as they are. There are about ten venues to go. Can she she stand the pressure? who knows?

They were wearing the stage make up prior to their performances at the Classical Brits Nominations event. Faryl and Katherine both performed and Myleene was the compere. Faryl normally wears very little make up when performing.

If she had walked into a recording studio and made that album and marketed it without the over the top hype, she would not have sold more than a few thousand worldwide. But I knew that anybody who could move me to tears was somebody very special indeed - and so it has turned out. She seldom performs on stages, she relies on recording. If you think that her Christmas release of a few carols and covers of others songs is worthy of a no.1 hit status then go ahead and chuck your money away on it. Personally I wouldn't buy it from the bargain tub. She just isn't that good a performer.

I can hear vastly superior singers than SuBo understudying in the West End and performing in 8 shows a week. SuBo is no new Bassey, Shelton, Streisand, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Garland, Minelli, Day or Linda Eder. She is where she is because people are surprised that a fat, ugly middle aged woman with a screw loose can actually sing in tune. She is not great as folk like to kid themselves that she is.

What a load of bollocks. Two of them, Faryl and Katherine are classical singers. Nothing at all to do with sex symbols. Katherine is the biggest selling female classical singer in the world currently. SuBo is not a star, she is a YT phenomenon. She cannot stand the pace of a mini tour of the UK and has had to pull out, Kath and Faryl perform at highly prestigious concert venues and are held in high regard by other classical stars.

cabaltwill215. Don't assume that in England we all have the same accents. For example, people in many rural communities like Cornwall and Devon in England pronounce "water" just like Americans sounding the "er" at the end. And to acejack23, the closest accent to English from a few hundred years ago is actually the American accent. Trash, candy, garbage, fall etc which seem like American words but are actually words that died out in England.

I didn't mean to sound like I was implying that england had the same accents. I understand how someone from Liverpool sounds different to someone from Newcastle or Leeds. Likewise don't assume we all have the same accent, Water sounds like "woodur" in some northeastern cities. I was just in disagreement over real english and fake english

yeah I know Americans have accents too. And yes. Americans speak English just as much as the English do. There is no such thing of which is more accurate either. For anyone to suggest otherwise is just either ignorant or arrogant.

The original English is dead. And has bben so for a very long time.
"True" English does not exist since all of it is made up of a plethora of different accents and dialects. American English is just another version of the same language.
As far as the origin goes, yes English probably had it roots in England, but if someone talked to you in that language today, you wouldn't understand a word.
Besides, even the people in England had to come from somewhere..

ok, true about 'accents' but us who speak origanal english, example ppl in london, can unserstand everyone in england, like all the weird accents, like liverpool and newcastle. its just other countries who find it hard, obviously. but thats what makes it interesting, it wud be boring all speaking like harry fuking potter and the queen. for me, i hate alabama and texes accent.

acejacko23, the closest to "original" English in England is what our farmers and people in rural communities talk like. It's definetely not London. Infact London was the first to change because the immigrants entered London first. Also, the established elite, like the "Queens English", they changed their accents to sound more french.

Is that true, about trying to sound more French? That's interesting. I hadn't known that.
the only time I change my accent is to make it Southern when I'm trying to make myself sound dumb. I don't know why the northern parts of the US think that a southern accent equals lack of a proper education, but we do.

Yes. The upper-class English accent is heavily influenced by French. The English upper-class have always spoken french since Norman times. But it was fashionable in the Edwardian Era, which isn't that long ago to have a french accent with the established elite. The average English person does not speak like this. And neither did the average English settlers of America. It's the reason why we spell "color" like "colour" and why we have so many french expressions like "deja vu".

zpik3, Olde English existed between the 5th to 12th century, and you would be able to understand them. Modern English has been in existance since 1500s. So yes. You would be able to talk to someone in English over 400 years ago and EASILY understand them. So don't be giving history lesssons out when you know very little. English as we know it today evolved from England. American-English is hardly a different language, infact it's closer to the English that was spoken in ENGLAND.

I fail to see how you argue my point..
My point is that languages always evolve. And trying to say that the English in England is any truer than the English from America is silly. As the difference between modern English and "olde English" is probably just as large as the differences between "English" and "American English". And perhaps you would be able to understand the old language, I'm no expert, but it would be very very different from the English of today.

One more thing.
If modern English is 400 years old, and the "old English" disappeared around the 12th century (900 years ago) then wouldn't that all but agree with my point of the old English being dead and gone?
I also said that you wouldn't be able to understand a person speaking the old English, not a person speaking the modern English from 400 years ago.
Please make sure you understand my arguments before giving a counterargument.

Olde English, Middle-English, and Modern English ALL originate from England. American-English is hardly different from the English spoken in England before their independence INFACT it's closer than that of the English spoken today in England.

Yes it originated in England, but do you have any idea how much a language changes over just a hundred years?
Shakespear made up like half the words in the modern English, words that didn't exist before. If just ONE PERSON can change a language this much, then how much must it not have changed over the 900 years you mentioned?
As an example I turn to Swedish, the oldest original form of Swedish in existence today is an obscure dialect spoken by a few thousand people in Finland (of all places)

And even the people living just a hundred kilometers outside of the borders of "Närpes" (as the place is called) have no fucking clue as to what the hell they are saying.
I can't say which of English or Swedish is older, but I CAN say that the dialect of "Närpes" is younger than 900 years. So if Swedish has undergone such large changes (without the help of shakespear) then so must the English language.
And again, these are all my own theories based on tidbits of information..

I agree, I just tried reading a clockwork orange and there are just too many words and I have no idea what their meanings are.
Before English was the Lingua Franca of the world it was Latin and Latin had a set standard because it was the language of the Catholic Chuch. To this day there are people that ignore the rules and language will evolve, i.e. the black vernacular. Some linguists argue this degrades the language while others argue that its just language evolution.

A clockwork orange is a fictional story set in the future. With a fictional language. No one talks like that. It's is hard for anyone to read that book. Latin was once the lingua franca of Europe. Not the world.

Latin was NOT the lingua franca of the WORLD. It was the lingua franca of western and central EUROPE. Any "dr" of "LINGUISTICS" would agree with that. Also it was not similar to English being the lingua franca today. Only the very very educated and upper class spoke latin as a vehicular language.
