Analysis of whale flesh does provide some data but nothing in the way of whale numbers. Lethal sampling can reveal average size and chemical composition of whale flesh but nothing on whale numbers. The only reason Japan isn't being condemned by the IWC is because they lobby developing nations to vote in favour of their whaling in exchange for aid. Fiji recently blew the whistle on this.
Japan isn't doing it to estimate numbers because in order to find numbers you use electronic tagging or a similar method. the only reason you'd take lethal samples is to analyse the composition of their flesh or other organs using spectrometry. It is common knowledge they are doing it as a front for commercial whaling, Japan has even admitted they plan to resume commercial whaling.

Simple maths: World population of Orcas: 10.000- 500.000 was the high and low on the sources I found, but the most reliable said around 100.000.
During a wild orcas life it eats alot more than 3 seals on average. Even if no seals are around a population, they are predators, and will kill other animals to survive. And I would bet more than 1% of all orcas are in fact killing whales. Ain´t that right?

Yes swampcat is right, Japan has no history of commerial whaling therefore is not recognised by the IWC so they CANNOT whale and must follow the ban on whaling.

Whaling is not needed on a mass scale and the amount of countries who eat whale meat are extremely small at about 1% The Japanese have a long history of whaling but it was not until the late 1940s that Japan started whaling on a mass scale as the population was facing mass starvation due to all resources being used in the war effort. It kept the country alive. Japan has a deep attachment to it. Cod stocks which are becoming extinct. but nobody moans about Brits eating fish n chips.

sounds like a "non binding" treaty these countries signed. So if it's non-binding there's no laws being broken. {3:25 to 3:45} "any country can issue itself whatever number it wishes of whatever species it wishes to take, say it's for scientific purposes, and then it can LEGALLY go about taking those whales" Not to mention it's NOT the 1800's anymore. There are only a handful of countries doing this. And they're eating what they take. I don't eat it but I won't stop them from eating it.

On average, they have produced one paper per 2,500 whales killed. Their top whaling research team has less than 10 scientists. to my knowledge japan has stated they cannot get population rates, very obivous why because they are killing them not recording them. They instead use population data from 1988. Which have since been scraped by the IWC because it was a false reading, this was done by the top scienist in the WORLD. wake up japan its 2008 not 1988.
in fact after killing 10 000 whales, japan has only realeased 4 peer reviewed (international status) reports on whale research. thats 2500 whale per one report!

Analysis of whale flesh does provide some data but nothing in the way of whale numbers. Lethal sampling can reveal average size and chemical composition of whale flesh but nothing on whale numbers. The only reason Japan isn't being condemned by the IWC is because they lobby developing nations to vote in favour of their whaling in exchange for aid. Fiji recently blew the whistle on this.

Japan isn't doing it to estimate numbers because in order to find numbers you use electronic tagging or a similar method. the only reason you'd take lethal samples is to analyse the composition of their flesh or other organs using spectrometry. It is common knowledge they are doing it as a front for commercial whaling, Japan has even admitted they plan to resume commercial whaling.

according to norway, their quota is just over 1000 and ever since 1993 they have never met it due to lack of whales in the region. therefore both Japans kill and quota is the largest in the world.

look mate captain cook founded australia, it was set up by captain phillp for a convict camp. never intended for whaling. a hundred years later after UK had been hunting whales for sveral years australia joined in, though it didn't last long us we have coal in australia and do not need the oil from whales that the rest of the world needed. we ended it even before the IWC ban.

Simple maths: World population of Orcas: 10.000- 500.000 was the high and low on the sources I found, but the most reliable said around 100.000.
During a wild orcas life it eats alot more than 3 seals on average. Even if no seals are around a population, they are predators, and will kill other animals to survive. And I would bet more than 1% of all orcas are in fact killing whales. Ain´t that right?

I think Japan is the one who should be RESPECTING. australia wants it stoped as it is affecting our oceans and other pacific islands. the ATS wants it to stop. even the IWC asked for it to stop. Yes swampcat is right, Japan has no history of commerial whaling therefore is not recognised by the IWC so they CANNOT whale and must follow the ban on whaling.
There is also other issues affecting it to, first they are in a IWC whale santuary in protected waters of ANTARCTICA, they are hunting endagered animals + others that have no population data.

Whaling for food is not a cultural thing.
Japan only started this industrialised, factory-ship style whaling after they lost WW2 and food was scarce.
Japan had planned to kill humpback whales this year, despite them being on the endangered list.
How would it look if I went into an animal sanctuary and killed a couple of rare tigers to make burgers from them?
Outrageous?
Yet this is exactly what Japan does when it sends it's whaling fleet into the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
