To those people saying it doesn't teach anything, it kinda does. If your just starting out with a tablet it gets familar with your tablet and a feel for the brush. Plus it's a simple way for messing with different brushes while seeing a solid result.
For Newbies like me, instant feedback on what I'm doing is a big help especially at the start when you don't even know enough to know what your doing wrong!
@Mastervideoize You are entirely correct in that Corel Painter is not free software, though GIMP and Corel Painter are not really the same type of graphics applications.
Corel Painter is designed to digitally simulate realistic art brushes and techniques, while GIMP is more akin to a freeware photo and image editor, similar (but not as powerful) as Adobe Photoshop.
@SoftwareMedia this app comes on the wacom bamboo create along with adobe photoshop*newest version* and sketchbook pro.they arent trials ut full version.the create comes with all except this wich is the one i have.
@girlsensemaker The Wacom Bamboo Create actually includes Autodesk Sketchbook Express (which is also available for free in a mobile version), Photoshop Essentials (a roughly $99 value) and Painter Essentials 4.
This program is the full, professional edition of Corel Painter 11, which is actually no longer available through most retailers. Corel Painter 12, however (MSRP $429) is actually on sale right now for 50% off.
@Karza00 For sure does. Doing this kind of paint-over is somewhat cheating. Values and forms are simply taken from the photograph directly, almost like erasing them out.
I really though this was going to be a painting tutorial when all it is is use a clown tool. I dont see the need of this brushes other than creating painting looking images out of real photos.
@gurkoz not really, it helps you learn referencing, plus helps you learn about skins tones, composition, poses, its not something a professional would do , its something they would have done while they where learning, but this is a tutorial...... for beginners
@zARCADEz I don't think you'll learn much of anything when it comes to composition and poses though when you just trace the original photograph like this. It's basically a 1:1 copy/clone.
The tutorial has it's uses and it's nice how he talks about some of the brushes he's using and the end-result is pretty cool, but it's not an original painting based on a photograph. It's basically a photograph retouched / painted over to look painted. It both is and is not painted.
I'm working on creating digital art from a blank canvas, and even though this tutorial covers variations on photopainting, it was incredibly helpful. I just got Corel Painter 11, and this really covered layering and brushes. Thank you :)
Just so some of you guys know (noiced some have trouble). In painter when you select a brush outside of the Cloner Brush category, make sure you click the clone button thing. Its on the colour wheel, looks like a stamp. If you don't, the brush will just behave as a normal brush, not a clone brush.
Do people really think that applying the destructive artistic filters in Photoshop compares to hand drawn brushes in Painter? I f you see every High school poster it has the cheese Photoshop watercolor effect. I have used the history brush and any other tutorial with Photoshop and it never looks as good as with Painter. You guys sound like the idiot at work who said he would never watch movies again because everything is done CGI and he wanted stop motion animation back.
@goido1951 I would agree. Though I paint from scratch anyway, all the filters in Photoshop do look very artificial. Ive played around with CS5 for a bit with its new mixer brush, its not bad but it is kinda just a better version of the smudge tool. They've put in a basic version of a brush that painter has had for years now. Photo editing>Photoshop. Painting>Painter
I have no experience with photoshop or corel, but basically, is this tutorial just showing how any picture can be turned into an oil painting by going over it?
what is the point? where is the fun or feeling of achievement in that? ha, may aswell just apply the 'cutout' filter in photoshop - same mediocre result.
When i tryed to download a trial version of this product, it went fine at first but then when it went to the license agreement page it was all blank! all that downloading just to get a flawed screen.

I have a question about the 'auto painting' feature in Corel Painter 11 -
I can see many supplementary uses for this feature in addition to free-hand painting, specifically for tracing textures. If we regard the source photograph as a textured relief surface, can we make a 'rubbing' of it? This means ignoring the colour and just taking the texture.
@weaponEX Getting color out of a picture isn't so complicated. Turn up contrast lower brightness and then change the histogram of the picture. You can also trace the picture with Corel Trace or change the palette to 8 bit of grey. There are lots of ways to get rid of color information :)
The brush strokes don't appear, please advise what I'm doing wrong? I have created a clone, filled the clone with a background colour, selected the brush and created a new layer as per your instructions but when I go to paint on the screen nothing appears. I see others are having the same problem, any help would be much appreciated. Thx
I have tried this multiple times and I still can't get the brushes to perform the same as in the video. When I start the 2nd brush it only paints a single color and not finer detail. Are there a more settings or a detail blog for this?
I did not realize how many idiots there are in the world until I read this post. This is just an effect a photographer can apply to his own work. You act like someone is going to be taking away your business. Did I hire you to paint my portraits in the first place? Well then, if I use this technique, it won't hurt you will it?
This is exactly what I wanted to learn. I'm a photographer not an artist but I want to be able to turn my photos into paintings. I don't like the way photoshop makes it look when you use the painting filters. This is great! Exactly what I needed. All of you that are putting him down need to know there are some people that need this type of training. I say good job! I'm buying the program!
I downloaded the trial version to try this out. I'm up to step 3.07 but when I brush over the "filled in color", it doesn't reveal the picture underneath like yours. I created the brush like yours and the "pick up underlying color" box is ticked, but it's still not showing the photo when I stroke. Could you please help?
right in the beginning... when you start with the grainy sargent... mine is not picking up the background color information. even with the clone stamp selected on the color palette. what am i doing wrong? thanks...
This infuriates me. As an artist trying to please my clients with original work of quality, seeing this technique to make cheap imitations makes me rage. I've been working in painter on a portrait piece from scratch for 4 hours now and I'm just now getting to finer details and this guy pulls this out his ass in less than 10 minutes?
Let's just all muddy the pool of real artists and make their lives a living hell shall we? Jeez....
@heavenknight18 This is for photographers that want to sell a different type of medium. Nobody's going to be taking your business, just adding to their own. As a photographer, you have to offer anything you can to compete since the digital explosion.

@Bidon45 I take it back that only solved 1 problem haha. Can you please list all the details of your brush setup? I'm pretty sure the brush options you choose makes all the difference here.
i don't get what he did so wrong.. i mean yeah he traced it which is kinda dumb.. but why is everyone saying he sucks if he hasn't acually drawn something from scratch?
@SmashThatRecord Exactly. This tutorial is for photographers and amateurs that want to use software to make something cool from a photo. Never did I state that this is how to make art from scratch. The great thing about this software is it helps people who have no artistic ability create cool photo effects. AUTO PAINTING IS BUILT IN - Corel designed it that way.
It is also a great tool for real artists, but you cannot create a 10 minute tutorial for teaching someone how to paint.
@SoftwareMedia Agreed; the point is that no one in the professional world cares if you "cheated". All they want is the final product. I mean, there's nothing wrong with trying to develop your skills. But if you do, and expect people to be impressed by how much time you took on something, you will be sorely disappointed when someone with a faster workflow takes your money from you on subsequent projects.
@SmashThatRecord Just as the guy says, this is a BEGINNERS tutorial. Just to get used to some of the techniques. That's all it is. Why is everyone freaking out?
I guess these people miss the whole point of "painting a portrait"!!! I think you did a great job!! Nobody said you were painting a portrait ! You are turning a picture into a painting!! Maybe if they gave it a try, they would see just how difficult it is! I'm just learning, and i think it was an excellent turorial, I actually learned quite a bit! Thanks for a great job!
There is nothing about this process or video that i find artistic or instructional. You could have saved your tablet alot of wear and tear by just copying the photo to a floppy disc.
OMG! I was watching you without sound (cuz of listening music) and when i saw 3:20 I thought this video made some child!! then I turned sound on heard your mystical voice..
using the clone feature is fine so long as it's just one part of your artistic process. Clone it, import it back into photoshop, edit/cut/paste/paint with brushes, etc until you have your final product. But this is just a straight clone. Nothing else added to it. You did it with blindfolds on. You learned nothing and infact it probably made you a worse "artist". If you integrated the clone into your work and progressed the "painting" a little more then maybe someone would call you an artist.
I use Corel painter 11 then I had Vista and still works with win7 pro. I use both adobe and corel software. But I would have to say, that painting over a image teaches you nothing.
Why go through all the trouble? If you're going to trace an image why not just use autopainter. A person will not learn to paint by doing it like this and you will never be able to make anything better than the original photograph.
I paid for Corel service to correct a painter 11 problem with it crashing. The tech did nothing to solve the problem, but tell me there was something wrong with my computer. I have seven computers and painter 11 crashed on all. The computer it is currently crashing on runs the following programs flawlessly. Corel designer 4x, draw4x, draw3x,Wordperfect, painter essentials, adobe master suite cs4, art rage pro, xara pro, twisted brush pro, zbrush and bryce.
Excuse me, I have troubles that are window wise to corel painter. I seem to can't toggle my brush selector for some reason. It's vanished and I don't know how to get it back. I keep toggling "brush selector" option under "window" but it's not showing. Please help! :(
I CANT DO THE STEP WITH GRAINY(NORMAL) SARGEANT, nothing happens, when i go to Clone Brushes I get some result, but not with Artistic, I am like dwawing but nothing happens, color stays the same. >?????????????????????????
hi, software media, i think your tutorial is great mate, even though some arseholes that have commented different! its a good tutorial and thanks. Im a digital photograhper and have masterd photoshop and offer a service of digital photo manipulation and things are going well. Ive wondered how some of the others on deviant art which do the same as me get that mild sort of painted look, and now ive found out its through painter x. Please keep up the good work mate.
although what u did was shit.. but i have to say u know how to use painter.. i have a question.. i want to do crap on it.. which one should i buy, corel painter or something or adobe shitzz
Hmmm...well,one things for sure...this is not painted, this is simply cloned,as everyone can see...If you have used that image as a reference and started from scratch,by making everything on your own, while LOOKING,not CLONING,the original image, then it could be called a painting and portraiting...But if you simply clone and mess around with the original image, where you haven't actually made anything, that's simply meaningless...why would anyone clone the image when they can actually paint it...?
HELP! I bought Painter 11 and I have a question concerning it. I like painting a lot and there is a feature in Photoshop where you can open a new window for the same image. This way you can have two different views of the same picture. It is very helpful when doing close-up work. Is there something like that in Painter 11? I thank you in advance.
Okay so corel painter isnt for doing this. It is used in many useful ways and this isnt one of em. This software wasnt developed for use as a toy. It is really useful if you are a designer. It can add a whole other demention to your work. This is just playing. I gaurantee that a monkey couldnt do coporate design and the stuff tis program was designed for.
I've done some digital paintings but I've never used software this advanced. I was interested because it seems to actually have some blending capabilities, but this video bums me out... I thought art was about creating something. I wanted this product so I could improve upon my digital art, but I'm worried that because of some of the functions, people will think I traced my work. Here's an idea... When you do a portrait, use a photo simply as a reference, then create something of your own.
This might be a stupid question, but once you have all the layers together and you are done with the painting, how do you put all the layer's together and save the picture as one layer (or one jpg pic)?
ok im a noob at this..im using photoshop to paint...anyways..dun freak if i am wrong but isnt this like cheating...as in all the program is duin is sampling the original iamge and just cloning it with the brush chosen..its not really as if we are actually drawing the image..if i chose a small brush and just went over the whole thing in a new layer, would it result in a perfect pic of jolie? i suck i know
How is it that you're able to get Artist's Oil -> Bristle Brush on a new layer on Ignore composite mode?? Everytime i select ignore, it will revert back to Add. PLease help, this is driving me crazy
When I follow the tutorial and go quick clone, there is no blank canvas only the image. Doesn't matter if clone or quick clone —all the same. if start from image, new layer does not work with artists oils.. Have to paint overtop of canvas to get it to work. I have never been able to get new layer to work with artists. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
You might still have the "tracing paper" overlay of the photo still active. This is the default setting when using quick clone. Click the little icon just below the red X button in the upper right corner of the window to turn it off. Also, when you start a new layer, check to make sure the "rubber stamp" icon is pressed (in the "Colors" box) if you want to use the clone brushes. The color wheel should be all gray.
How come when I paint on the new layer no paint shows up? Yet when I paint on the canvas it does?
Either way I can't expose the picture underneath since it isn't in the same layer, and either way I just the get the colour. I've also selected "pick up underlying colour" on the new layer window.
One thing is for sure - is that there is a lack of quality Corel tuts here on YT - Usually there are nothing but videos set to music - which to me is all but frustrating. Here we have a teacher - who patiently walks you thru the steps, understands our needs... a describes in detail what you need to do to creat a simple and terrific piece of work! BRAVO!
waste of time... just run her photo through some painter filters in photoshop...since u are not painting her anyway.

I challenge the artist to create the same work using the photo only as reference. because what he did was nothing more than photo-editing.
blueelohim1 2 years ago 2
I guess these people miss the whole point of "painting a portrait"!!! I think you did a great job!! Nobody said you were painting a portrait ! You are turning a picture into a painting!! Maybe if they gave it a try, they would see just how difficult it is! I'm just learning, and i think it was an excellent turorial, I actually learned quite a bit! Thanks for a great job!

There is nothing about this process or video that i find artistic or instructional. You could have saved your tablet alot of wear and tear by just copying the photo to a floppy disc.

using the clone feature is fine so long as it's just one part of your artistic process. Clone it, import it back into photoshop, edit/cut/paste/paint with brushes, etc until you have your final product. But this is just a straight clone. Nothing else added to it. You did it with blindfolds on. You learned nothing and infact it probably made you a worse "artist". If you integrated the clone into your work and progressed the "painting" a little more then maybe someone would call you an artist.
rainbowsod 2 years ago
haha, I like how he is making it sound like he is painting. funny
And for those commenting on photoshop being better, it cannot give the same simulation of traditional media. And if you disagree you are wrong.
They are both different apps, one is not better then the other
izikiel21 2 years ago
POS! Learn to draw first, then you will understand why "overpainting", "cloning" and "cheating" is so wrong.

Corel Painter 11 crashes.

Why would you do a painting this way? Base a painting on a photograph, and use the photograph as the base of the painting? This is ridiculous.

hi, software media, i think your tutorial is great mate, even though some arseholes that have commented different! its a good tutorial and thanks. Im a digital photograhper and have masterd photoshop and offer a service of digital photo manipulation and things are going well. Ive wondered how some of the others on deviant art which do the same as me get that mild sort of painted look, and now ive found out its through painter x. Please keep up the good work mate.

although what u did was shit.. but i have to say u know how to use painter.. i have a question.. i want to do crap on it.. which one should i buy, corel painter or something or adobe shitzz
please advice me..
guicapone2 2 years ago

I thank you in advance.

guicapone2 2 years ago
Okay so corel painter isnt for doing this. It is used in many useful ways and this isnt one of em. This software wasnt developed for use as a toy. It is really useful if you are a designer. It can add a whole other demention to your work. This is just playing. I gaurantee that a monkey couldnt do coporate design and the stuff tis program was designed for.
srfrr 2 years ago
What nonsense. Corel Painter was designed specifically to mimc the real medium of paint on canvas and has nothing to do with 'coporate (sic) design'
They have Corel draw for that.

Razin55 2 years ago
Click on save as then go to save as type: then click RIFF files and you can continue your work another time. :)
Angrypanties99 2 years ago
ok im a noob at this..im using photoshop to paint...anyways..dun freak if i am wrong but isnt this like cheating...as in all the program is duin is sampling the original iamge and just cloning it with the brush chosen..its not really as if we are actually drawing the image..if i chose a small brush and just went over the whole thing in a new layer, would it result in a perfect pic of jolie? i suck i know

How is it that you're able to get Artist's Oil -> Bristle Brush on a new layer on Ignore composite mode?? Everytime i select ignore, it will revert back to Add. PLease help, this is driving me crazy
Stagheart 2 years ago
When I follow the tutorial and go quick clone, there is no blank canvas only the image. Doesn't matter if clone or quick clone —all the same. if start from image, new layer does not work with artists oils.. Have to paint overtop of canvas to get it to work. I have never been able to get new layer to work with artists. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
baileyboyful 2 years ago
You might still have the "tracing paper" overlay of the photo still active. This is the default setting when using quick clone. Click the little icon just below the red X button in the upper right corner of the window to turn it off. Also, when you start a new layer, check to make sure the "rubber stamp" icon is pressed (in the "Colors" box) if you want to use the clone brushes. The color wheel should be all gray.
SoftwareMedia 2 years ago

BRAVO!
