The very poor production on this album hurt some great songwriting. As it just sounds very weak. I understand what they were going for but it just did not work. Gary does his part very well. But what can do.
I remember when "That's Why I Love You" leaked, or was released on the Internet, just before this album came out. I listened to that song hundreds of times and couldn't wait for this album. I was disappointed with it at the time, but I've come to appreciate it.
Before this album, Sam and Dave wrote the lyrics to the music. I read in an article that for this album, Ed wrote some of the music (maybe all) after Gary wrote the lyrics or poems. Ed said he was so inspired by Gary's writing.
I saw Van Halen live in New Zealand back in 1998 when this album came out. I did not know what to expect with Gary Cherone as the new lead singer. All that I can say was that I was totally blown away with his performance. I think he had something to prove and he sure gave it 110%. A great voice and excellent stage presence.
This is one of Van Halen's finer songs and Eddie's guitar playing is pure genius. Sounds amazing on a good stereo at full volume!!!
This is the first time I've listened to Van Halen III. It's not bad, but I can understand why it doesn't have holding power like the previous VH groups. With songs lasting from 5-8 minutes long and on the more creative side, they aren't radio friendly. FM radio does not like long songs because it cuts into advertising time. I think the soud was dated...even when it came out.
A lot of people always attribute this album's failure to Gary, but anyone who has fucking ears can hear Eddie being WAY more experimental than ever. It wasn't just Gary people couldn't get on board with... Gary didn't write the songs or the riffs. I always thought it was a smidge short sighted on the fans part.
I was referring to this incarnation of the band...meaning with Gary. I feel that this album, and Gary as the frontman, was and remains underrated. I thought the album was creative, thoughtful and darker than all albums they've written since Fair Warning. The band themselve never said this album "sucks". Never. Low sales forced their hand. And after Gary they got Sam back, not the classic lineup.
Every VH song has always start with edddie riffs. This album shows what a good musian he really is without david mouth being in the way or sammy hair. Now for the haters who think eddie is all about tapping.Take you ears out of your ass a second and not only listen the his leads listen to his solid all around playing.I know you are not trying to here this because the players today are already hating on him because they are not him.Don't hate the player baby (it is what it is)
Say what you want about the different singers or incarnations of this band. This song is awesome. Eddie's guitar work and overall composition of this song is mind blowing. That guy is on another level.
the intro is wonderful and the guitar work all over the song too, but the solo really really sucks, it ruins the music. And he sings out of tune sometimes. Finally this is a good song but preformed very wrongly.
@88Theboz People like you, make the rest of us rock fans look like idiots. Just shut up and enjoy the shit you enjoy and quit slamming other shit... you sound like a neanderthal.
@SatansAnus666. Your "pub band" will never be a pimple on the ass of this band on their worst day. Sorry, man, but this band was one of the most underrated, ever.
@thisischavez how can you call this band "underrated"??? they've sold 80 millions albums and are one of the most successful bands ever!!! I love the Van Halen albums that are actually good (Van Halen, VH II, 1984), but this album is just a turgid, forgettable pile of crap. Even the band themselves think it sucks, why do you think this line up only lasted one album and they reformed the classic line up soon after???
i hate when people say van hager when sam or gary are both better than dave, all he ever did was scream and talk, not much of a singer. hager was kickin ass before van halen ever came out!
@tourdeforce17 Yeah, I agree. I like the simplicity of this song; not at all overproduced. And Eddie's huge solo is one of my favorites of his, it has so much emotion.
one of the best vh albums

@benemles This song is an enigma . The best guitar work lies everywhere but the solo. I agree the solo really really sucks
