i'm guessing the person who asked this question asked because the sound that they were used to had changed. regardless of anything you should always have your self created data backed up, and if you loose that data on one source be sure to duplicate it somewhere. but a change in the sound of your drives over time is normal, but it does signal midlife for your hdd, and that means the drive might fail at any time, or become unreliable. but dont panic just make sure that you are keeping backups.
@kght222 in other words all self created data (stuff you make) should ben in 2 places at least at all times. when i say self created data i mean files that you yourself make, not the programs you use to make them, even if your such a dick that you download all your software you can pretty much allways download it again, but if you loose a big part of you're phd thesis that you were writing on a combo of word and power-point thats gonna be a bitch. getting the programs back would be the easy part
All these answers are nice and detailed, but I think it would be better if you just put all these questions/answers on one video rather than have like 100s' of videos of questions. Plus it'll make it more convenient on you and the viewers.
this feels like telepathy! my harddrive started clicking yesterday and i was really wondering what it would mean... and today he just answers my question i didn't send ;)
this has happend time from time sincerely I can say -dont reboot save the files you want on dvd or cd .If there are files that gets your computer freeze- those are gone. Just save things in small potions since there will come the lost file that basiclly freezes windows
can this happen to an external harddrive to? Just bought a new one, and its making that sound. But i guess its only when im downloading something to it or transfering files to the HD. Hope you can answer my question:)
not sure the type of clicking you are discriping here, but if your talking about normal read noises coming from your hard drive 24/7 then by disabling some start up items you could have disabled some program that was constantly assessing the HDD. If your talking about a bad clicking(dont know how to explanine it better) you might want to look into that. First find the manufactor of your drive, and go to their website and download a HHD testing software from them and test your HDD.
to be honest i usualy find when working with older computers that this noise is from the reader head having to make excessive movements due to scattered data. using good defrag software such as IObit defrag with an optimasation option will place regularly used data closer together so less movement of the head is required which inturn means less noise. hope this is of some use to someone :D
I guarantee you they will all fail in a short period of time. I see about 50 computers a week and %90 of the ones with clicking hard drives fail within a month or two. Anymore if they aren't under warranty and they click I recycle them.
The clicking noise is from your magnetic reader head, its a very very small fragile piece that wares with time; and eventually can no longer find the data which was requested. A (very) small percentage of the time, this is caused by an insufficient power level, and a even smaller percentage of time it is caused by temperature (I have NEVER heard of temperature being an issue).
My computer beeps at me when I play high end graphic games. What is it telling me!? I have appropriate specs to run crysis, but after a few minutes a get an intermittent beeping!? Is something overheating? It only happens when I run hardware intensive games. Help!
i got my pc loose connected motherboard lays on the ant static bag everything connected loose had been working for weeks however the hardddrives are so warm i get burned touching them is that bad?
I agree on that statement regarding Packard Bell. A friend of mine had a Packard Bell and the hard drive was clicking all the time, and the somewhat pricey computer was slow. So yeah, avoid Packard Bell
Hey rodney. Just wanted to say thank you for the advice. My Seagate drive has been doing this for some time and I GREATLY appreciate your explaining this!

i got 3 seagate drives , they all make a little noise.
not really loud clicking , just a noise that makes you know its busy.
like a spinning wheel inside or a lens that changes possition.
i bought the first seagate 3 years ago an external drive.
i even dropped it a few times .
IT NEVER CRASHES OR GETS BUSTED.
unless thee noise is really loud and annoying , i wouldnt worry.

Hes not talking about that kind of clicking. its the clicking when the hard drive finds like a bad sector or sumthing and then hits the the disk.
Its normly an early sing that your HD is gunna fail

ExZero16, it was regular read clicking- it was a very noisy HD.
As I said in my previous post, deleting the useless Acer startup programs and running a defrag fixed it. Now I rarely hear the noise.

I had two old computers frmo the manufacturer Packard Bell.
Terrible crunching and clicking and horrible screeching noises coming from the HD whenever it was being read.
This is "normal" in their computers, don't ever buy from Packard Bell.
