Beautiful.Amazing recording for it's time. You tube took it down.well I now have it on my H drive so WGM or whoever thinks they own viberating air buzz off and leave the music alone.you won't sell the videos to us.You won't play them on Tube so ya wanna let them rot.Useless.
This rehearsal of "One Note Samba" is probably a video recorded in early 1963 at Gerry's apartment in NY. Gerry was at the height of his career and Jobim dawn on the U.S.. But this video was filmed before the big moment of Bossa Nova at Carnegie Hall and also before the composition of "The Girl from Ipanema". Gerry does not even include this song on their albums. This year he released Night Light which included "Carnival's Orpheus" of Jobim and Vinicius.
@celsocsouza The Girl From Ipanema was composed in 1962, but it and bossa nova became a huge hit internationally in 1964 with the release of the album, Getz/Gilberto.
This song "Samba de Uma Nota Só" ("One Note Samba") was first recorded in 1960 with Sylvia Telles. It first reached a wide audience on the Grammy-winning bossa nova LP Jazz Samba (Getz/Byrd/Jobim), which reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 in 1963.
(So, the "1954" date in the previous comment must've been a typo.)
A very young and handsome Antonio Carlos Jobim, and a sweet get together with his friend Gerry Muligan, to produce such a beautiful, happy video, and play one of my favorite Jobim tunes: "Samba de uma nota so"
Thanks a lot for posting this video!!! I was so upset when the same video posted by sombody else disappeared from YouTube. What luck running into this one now! The two are my great favorites. The event took place in Gerry's apartment in NYC in 1954. They are so young and enthusiastic here! And Gerry is playing a clarinet. Such a rare video! Thanks again!
Refreshing to see that Gerry was human after all and didn't get the phrasing immediately. Did these two genuises record together? Anyway, great video!
I understand it's Mulligan's apartment. I've seen this before on YouTube but it disappeared for a while, you've made my day by putting it up again, many thanks :-)
This is the apartment of one of them in New York, I¡m not sure if in the Mulligan's apartment. In any case its wonderfull that video and it is not rare from Tom Jobim: he has other videos at home training, singing with Gal Costa or Chico Buarque and others-

This clip is from the wonderful CD/DVD The Age Of Steam, by Gerry Mulligan. It includes the 1971 album plus a fantastic documentary film.

Mulligan must have hated Getz for cashing in on the Bossa Nova wave . . .
