Bush wasn't saying Iran has a nuclear "program", he's saying they have knowledge and understanding of "how" to make a nuclear weapon. Everyone needs to try supporting Bush as our leader instead of whining like a bunch of children all the time.

There's no point rationalizing key points like this to people with so much hatred for Bush that they are blind to the real despots of the world. First, a key footnote in the statement that says "we judge with high confidence that Iran halted program..." states that it does NOT include their declared civil work related to uranium enrichment. Obtaining enough HEU for a nuclear weapon is THE main challenge for acquiring nuclear weapons. Furthermore, the DNI has disavowed the document. Iran is still processing HEU even when they have been given the option of using LEU for a potential nuke reactor.

I think it's important to stress that just because we disagree with militaristic/imperialist foreign policies of the US, we have no illusions about repressive and despotic regimes like the one in Iran or Saddam's Iraq. Example of this would be Panama, where we supported Noriega, then overthrew him when he started screwing up, and installed an oligarchy of the business class which was entirely beholden to US economic and military and political support. We gave him money, weapons, we sold him weapons, we acted as a democratic shield for him in the UN, we supported, financed, and supplied his war with Iran, and none of the atrocities which we later tried him for were a surprise to us at the time, and were carried out with our weapons that we either sold, loaned him the money to buy, or gave him. So, colonialism? No. But imperialism, in which a country seeks to create client states which are politically and economically tied to the mother country, and are utilized to ensure a supply of natural resources and a market for goods, and is politically controlled to ensure they follow our lead? yeah.

As for the goal today in Iraq, the Gov. and constitution would be fair to all, ideal to none. Together with an Iran that Must throw off the yoke of the Mullahs, I see another island of moderates provided we support the grassroots movement in Iran. We wont invade Iran. McCain doesn't plan on it that is liberal rhetoric. When the Mullahs are nearly Nuclear, Israel will Bomb their facilities, but we can't rely on Israel. Peace through strength. We are the Superpower, only "we" can beat us.

Panama would be an example of Vital national interest wouldn't it. The Canal must be at our disposal at all costs. Noriega became a puppet of the Drug Cartels. He had to go. the world is better off for it. Saddam was an enemy of Iran, and we have a history of these alliances. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" As for the supply of arms to Saddam: Those were Soviet tanks and planes he had. Those were French missiles, and shells. AK-47s aren't built in the US. We supplied 1% of his arms.

If by "paying a huge price" you mean we boycott them, then so be it. Cuba is Castro, that's that. You think our $s will help them? Look at the Billions we poured down the "palestinians". To what end? Have they stopped attacking Israel? No. They cry about bread, but they have plenty of $ for Guns, Bombs, and Ammo. You want to see real oppression and poverty? Look at the Congo.

There's no point rationalizing key points like this to people with so much hatred for Bush that they are blind to the real despots of the world. For many of these people, the enemy of their enemy is their friend. To them, a negative comment about Chavez or Ahmedinejad is more offensive than a criticism of Bush.

eddizy: that's not true for everyone. i think that is an exaggeration. I think it is widely accepted around the world that Ahmedinejad is a loudmouth idiot. A bigger loudmouthed idiot than Bush.
As far as Chavez, I honestly don't think many people in this country are in a position to evaluate him on his policies. He certainly is a blowhard, but I think the main reason the US is against him is that he rejects the domination of his country's economy by US business interests!

Chavez has threatened war on Columbia and has tried to erase term limits for himself. He's a complete authoritarian socialist who has been trying to drum up failed economic policies that have only plagued South America. He has been the most ardent supporter of Castro, a man who murdered and jailed any dissidents to rise to power. There is a very large list of reasons to rest a negative opinion of Chavez upon. His resistance to US trade is only one.

edizzy: #1 I am in no way saying this guy is all that, BUT, let me at least say I totally disagree with you about the SA economics...the disaster of the SA economy stems from the stranglehold that the US and WB and IMF have on countries there. We keep them poor so that we can dominate the raw materials and agriculture sectors of the econ. to economic conditions little better than colonial era: a tiny elite working with multinationals slups up the profits while the vast majority are working for pitiful wages, under substandard conditions, w. no opportunities, very little social safety net, and no political voice.
Re: Columb, that country is a military oligarchy client state of the US and has one of the worst human rights records on the planet, among innumerable other negative qualities. No time for why they are fightng w/Chavez.
