Killing a deer with shotgun (not slug) is normal up to a distance of 20 to 25 meters, and even possible up to more than 30 meters I suppose. For birds and rabbits 30 meters is no problem either, considering both spreading and impact energy. Alex Jones is right on many issues, but in this case I think he's just a bad shooter. Also by looking at his stance it's reasonable to say most of the shots will go above the target.

The choke and even the gauge matter little at that distance with that shot size. I have shot tens of thousands of rounds of 7 1/2 shot through a 12 gauge Rem 870 Wingmaster equipped with an extra full turkey choke. At those ranges, the shot rarely penetrates fully through a ground squirrel. In fact, even with the tighter choke and larger gauge, I have seen birdshot fail at 30 feet or even closer. Birdshot is simply a poor performer, which is why I laugh at people who use it for self defense.
