They are more Americana than just about anything. America IS America, forever etched in music history. Just go around the world and play one of their songs...

This sounds more like the original tape was either recorded too slow, or it was speeded on playback. Not only is it too fast, but the pitch is higher than the original key of G. That makes me think the tape speed is off. These guys are usually dead on in tune, so I can't imagine the whole band playing the song sharp!
As a muso myself I just have to say that for me this track kicks the ass of virtually every song ever written anywhere (just my opinion of course) and this is the first time I've discovered this version of it. Loving the crowd reactions, the way those kids are singing along with the guys and the looks on their faces as they sing something they love and identify with... you just don't get that stuff these days... I'm touched once again by this band.
