@BlackOppTamama lotsonumbers is correct. Perry wrote this song about LA but it was changed to SF. Obviously a lot was changed, since they reference it being the city by the bay, but it was supposed to be LA originally. Even though it pains me to admit that...
Haha....the term "City by the Bay" refers to San Francisco. It only makes sense that it refers to San Francisco as Its more than just a city by the bay. The city is the peninsula that closes off the Pacific from the bay minus the small opening under the Golden Gate Bridge. lol
I think they meant the bay by the city of Detroit... They have no bay but that`s what they meant in this song ...hahahah. They have a river so that is close enough heheheh. great song no matter what bay you live near eh?? hahahah
I quess everyone can interpret this song as they like it. But the originally it was meant for The Great City of San Francisco. I live in Miami and driving from the beach to Miami on the cause was this song came on. So I can see why people who live a city that has a bay can relate. But yes it's San Francisco...
@SebastianSlasher The song is a ballad about Journey's city of origin, San Francisco. It was one of Steve Perry's first Journey songs, and was recorded soon after his joining the band.
@SebastianSlasher it was supposed to be L.A. ("city of L.A." instead of "city by the bay") but they changed it so that they wouldnt name drop Los Angeles
@lotsonumbers SF is known as the city by the bay and journey is from SF. What bay would they be talking about if it was LA, and why would they sing about LA.
@BlackOppTamama Supposedly Steve Perry went to L.A. and was so impressed with the city that he wanted to make a song about it, But changed the lyrics to reflect S.F. instead, And that's not a factoid that I read on some random website, I heard that on the Greg Kihn show (I live in San Jose) And, I mean, That's Greg Kihn, Why would he lie?
@BlackOppTamama Well, Yeah, The song is about S.F., But it was supposed to be about L.A. when Steve Perry first suggested the idea to the band, Buts that's just when they were writing the song, of course they wrote the lyrics to reflect San Francisco at some point early on, Cause that's where they were from, And again, I heard that on the Greg Kihn show.
@lotsonumbers No, the song was meant to be about SF, get over it. Why the hell would he even want to write it about la. I don't even know who Greg kihn is, but it is obviously not reliable.
I LOVE THIS SONG IT REMOINDS ME OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA IM ORIGINALLY FROM HAYWARD.I WANT THEM TO PLAY THIS ON MY FUNERAL DAY.STEVE PERRY CAN HOLD A NOTE FOREVER HES A BEAST.

My favorite song about San Francisco, next to the iconic one by Tony Bennett. It's been awhile since I've gone to the City By The Bay...maybe I need to plan a trip soon? yeah!
I remeber when my Ship visited there for 4days when I was in the Navy.
It was so cool!

Great video. I'm Looking for a video of KRON Ch 4 TV San Francisco promo that featured Journey's song "Lights". The Lyrics were changed for TV promo that aired in late 70's or early 80's.
