Continuing on from that, I find it really bizarre that Seth McFarlane claims "All In The Family" as such a big influence, when it feels like nothing more than a passing thought in the pre-production of characters. Peter isn't nearly as controversial as Archie Bunker, nor as revolutionary in terms of character.

But, I digress, it's important to really get us to care about characters before throwing something random at us.

One of the things the Simpsons and The Critic (as well as a few other prime-time animated shows) did right in the 90s was put the characters first. I think it takes a lot to get you to care about people like Jay Sherman or Homer Simpson, but you really do, and that's important. They weren't DEEP characters, but they had different sides to them. They felt slightly realistic and that's what made THESE kinds of gags funny.

This is so random and stupid. Seeing this show makes you realize how unoriginal Family Guy is. It's a less clever version of the same style of random humor, with the characters of The Simpsons. It just takes gags like these and repeats them throughout an episode that doesn't have a coherent storyline.

That's what happens when dumbass studios cancel shows and then suddenly bring them back after 4 years. Then you're left to hire monkeys who write the "jokes" that are now seen on Family Guy.
