  • REM at the top of their game; it was all down hill from here IMO.Such a brilliant performance this one (and the MTV performance of same). The lyrics themselves are just 'ok' IMO, but what makes this so transcendent is Stipe's delivery - bang on and he arguably never did surpass it the subsequent years of his career.

  • One of the best songs ever. Takes me back to being a kid - great stuff. Thank you REM for everything you did.

  • There's not one song on their last few albums that can invoke such strong emotions than this one. But there are plenty before....

  • Farewell REM. If this song were your only legacy, it would still be worth more than most bands' entire output.

  • I heard they broke up today... this was the first song I thought of. I never even got to see them... we'll miss them.

  • this could be the saddest dusk... and this might well be the saddest and best song by REM, if this song doesn't move you , you surely must be already dead

  • Wonder how mando master Buck would sound if he played Celtic. Hey, if Richie Blackmore could play Renaissance music, Peter Buck could probably play Celtic.

  • oasis who?

  • They turn to geniusship yet again. Sagenhaft, as one says in German.

  • Who are the three dorks who dislike this song??

  • Peter Buck might just be THE coolest guy alive, EVER.

  • @REMCUREBOY Amen on the Buckster.

  • @REMCUREBOY I met him in Chile, and yes, he is ;)

  • Oh for Darwin's sake, what's Oasis got to do with this? R.E.M. and Oasis are great for different reasons.

  • Noel is god

  • oasis had some good tracks. but anyone who says noel gallagher writes better songs than REM has obviously never listened to the albums murmur, reckoning, fables of the reconstruction, document, green, automatic for the people.... there are at least 50 awesome songs just off those albums.

  • Noel Gallagher is better, end of.

  • Oasis were IMHO a bunch of tossers, and totally up their own arses, but they had some great songs - but not timeless ones like REM. But you're right, loads of great bands don't break the US - bands like the Levellers who had more gold & platinum albums than other UK bands in the 1990s. Including Oasis. Anyway, REM are brilliant. I can't see Noel coming up with an Everybody Hurts or a Perfect Circle. He's good, but not that good ;-) peace

  • What's the name of that singer?

    He sings beautifully.

  • He lip synched this. That's unfortunate but I guess a lot of bands did this then.

  • @ibrokeitdidnti no lip synched this is live.....

  • @696cerberus, hi cerberus. I really don't think this is live. (At least not the version uploaded to youtube, but maybe the audio was swapped prior to uploading?) The audio on this video (listening again now) matches exactly what is on Out of Time. I remember each note because I used to play this song to death when I first got the cd ;)

  • Come on D.F.!!!!!!!

  • Does he ever put less than 100% emotion into every performance of every song he sings??? The guy will become a Saint.

  • To even compare oasis to these guys is an insult to rem.

  • @twkm05 Absolutely agree !

  • @twkm05 Get to fuck, Noel Gallagher has churned out more classics than REM mate, I mean come on.

This is a good tune though,

  • @BLAGASPANTS

"Noel Gallagher has churned out more classics than REM mate"

Are you mad!? Noel only made it big in the UK. He could never break the US market.......I mean, come on.

  • @brightlights456X Who gives a flying fuck about breaking the US market, plenty of great musicans who don't break the US market.

Also if Oasis didn't break the US market then the majority of bands out there will go down as never breaking it to.

I'm on about the music, not what they sold. Noel Gallagher's song writing pisses all over REM's.

  • @workingclasshero1981

It proves REM are more diverse and can connect with the comman man around the world. Noel was just battling London's Blur. Oasis were too arragant. Kurt Cobain was right, British bands care too much about image and less on music. Hence the geled hair and Italian leather jackets, while REM lead singer looks like a bum.

Oasis at No 10 with Tony Blair that says it all.

  • Excellent passionate performance.

    Nothing less expected......

  • I'm only 27 and this music came out when I was a young kid. These guys are one of the most underrated groups of all time. I think anyone who considers themselves a lover of all music must rate REM among the elite. A truly unique style and sound that is breathtaking and inspiring every time I listen. Their music sends your mind on a winged journey, soaring over God's beautiful creation. Stipe's passion is undeniable. There will never be another REM; as special as the likes of the Beatles.

  • I still have my REM pin that I had on my backpack in college. Those were such amazing times musically-REM, Husker Du, the Replacements, Jesus and Mary Chain, and on and on. Every year got progressively better for music until late 90's when the boy bands hit up til now.

  • Their music just captures my soul.

  • amazing!

  • sounds amazing and its live...wow such a haunting beautiful song

  • i don't remember REM being on 'No Nirvana'...?

  • my englsihs is noot the best and i think its hard to understand rem´s lryrics but it hink this is a very melancholic love-song, right? is that a girl which is half a world away?? and he has to go alone hold it allone?? that would be my interpretation.^^.... a very nice song^^

  • Rare footage of Bill Berry out in front (and not playing the drums). Indeed, when he left the band, they lost more than just a drummer. They lost an accomplished musician, songwriter, and lyricist.

  • unbelivable lyrics. just amazing. so much meaning

  • Oh, this lonely world is wasted,

    Pathetic eyes high alive,

Blind to the tide that turns the sea,

This storm it came up strong,

    It shook the trees,

    And blew away our fear,

    I couldn't even hear~ <3

I think the words to this song are beautiful.I love this song :D

  • Unbelievable!!!!

  • I love this voice, lovely!

  • this is for the most beautiful song ever together with youu are the everything.rem member since 1990

  • One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums from my favourite band.

  • the best REM's song

  • absolutely awesome..such a soulful tranquility,sonorous bliss,a gentle caress for the breaking heart,inspired...

  • if you don't like R.E.M., go die in a house fire.

  • @Benacious86 A bit harsh....but i'm safe cos i bloody love these guys!

  • @Benacious86 A bit harsh, I have no worries...

  • think its "my hands are tired" in the album version... :p

  • Wow, just watched this for the first time. Such a beautiful song. I will likely get flamed for this but R.E.M was never quite the same after Bill left.

  • right on brother, you are right.!

  • @Nigelxman No flames here . I agree, although they have got better and better live! Manchester 08 was AWESOME!

  • "My hand's tired..."

Is that a cheeky reference to self-pleasuring while your lover is far away?

  • now nearly every song can be interpreted that way, so i dont think so. As an example about self.pleasuring:

    Carry on my wayward son

There'll be peace when you are done

Lay your weary hands to rest

    Dont you cry no more

get my point? this one is just beautiful

  • The music, the words, and his voice all carry so much emotional resonance when he sings "My mind is racing". So many bands could only dream of capturing that.

  • you are sooo right!

  • by the way

    BILL BERRY ON BASS!

  • He really has lost touch.

It seems like anything after UP really lacks emotion. the last 3 albums seemed really emotionless and empty to me. even Accelerate, which was sort of just "okay" seems really empty. it's not heady anymore, it's not poetic, and it's not emotional.

still, i can't wait to hear this one that they are working on now. i won't lose hope.

they need to ditch jacknife lee and just go with some raw, unknown producer (or self produce) and just do it!

  • @vuvaladusi And dou you like the last record? :)

  • "This could be the saddest dusk ever seen"... Seriously, where does he get this stuff from - what a fabulous first line! And why has he lost touch???

  • A song of divorce, loneliness, disenfranchisement.. Having to go it alone. I've been there.

  • Only the ones who had been there can understand it! the sadness and emptyness...

  • in my top 3 of rem songs and thats saying somethin, cos they have a lot of great songs! so moving, not many songs move something inside but this does

  • are u kidding me sweetness2follow u lost ur mind REM is great but dont talk shit about oasis or there songs

  • There best song by far.

  • this one is undoubtedly the best REM song. Lyric is beatiful, composition superb. They have many beatiful songs but this one beats all. Even losing my religion.

  • I agree

  • wow i love REM...........forever and ever......... and when im death ill hope they still love me^^

  • This song is hauntingly beautiful. It is so rare to come across a song which is both a lovely musical composition and a great lyrical piece. The cadence of Stipe's voice completes the trifecta!

  • yes...oasis's song is "half the world away"......not the same song, but i love both of those songs.......take care....Brian......

  • Amazing, thanks Michael S.

  • great...reminds me of driving to swallow falls in wales many years ago.....

  • Wicked. I can see how this song fits in perfectly with that surrounding. I live in Wales and have been there a few times. Bloody brilliant place. Are you from britain?

  • what a brilliant song

  • half a world away and half the world away are two totally different songs written be two totally different people. both geniuses.

  • this song is calleD half a world but oasis half the world

  • LOL!, this is the original, oasis didn't write this, Michael Stipe did.

  • the oasis song is a completly different song

  • Oasis? You are so wrong my friend. This song is about 18 years old.

  • Your songs give me peace...thank you stipe :)

  • I Love This Song :]

  • it is indeed the version from "R.E.M. Blue The Acoustic Concert" lip-synced (i was wrong, deleted my previous comment ;)

    cheers

  • Love the keyboards on this song.

  • beautiful song

    one of my faves forever

  • Am pretty sure the "no nirvana" title was in reference and homage to Kurt Cobain

  • Hm....Funny how one minute you can be so close to someone and the next it's like you never knew them.

  • i very much agree, i left school 3 weeks ago, and everyone was like "oh il miss you so much" and now people dont wanna know. i find it fascinating how quickly people move on.

  • I really prefer ''half THE wolrd away''Nevermind, this song is really good though.

  • The songs name is "half a world away".

  • Quality. Simple as that!

  • Bill Berry on bass..... awesome.

  • civil war song

  • what a beautiful song... and very nicely performed imo.

  • sublime

  • what kills me is the first time I heard this song I related it to some dumb boy. Now I hear it and think of my kids. Well good on REM for being multifunctional, LOL

  • why is it called no nirvana?

  • Nirvana meaning being totally free from suffering and the cyle of rebirth, i think No Nirvana is as good as lifes gonna get with the awesome acts and music which they did have on. :)

  • The first time I heard this was at the end a Scrubs episode, I immediately felt in love with song.

  • i did exactly the same.

but ive always loved rem and scrubs. so it was great to hear them together.

  • me too !

  • This is great song!! <3<3

  • I think most people have missed just how original REM really is. Especially if they have only heard their radio "hits."

  • I couldn't agree more. REM is just different. The atmosphere of its songs is unique.

  • beautiful song,great band,romance,love,pozitive energy....REM forever!!

  • one of the best ever made by REM. This is the alternative style which makes REM so special. I got a bit disappointed about this new album

  • COOL!

  • Really underrated song. The opening line in particular is absolutely devastating. The mandolin's a nice touch as well.

Wardyboo - If you don't like REM, why are you looking at their videos?

  • "I had to much to drink and i didnt think of you"

  • Pretty much gives it away what the song's about.

  • fantastic song , i wish i knew what it was about though.

  • A legendary band, and everybody can see it.

Mr. Mike Mills is also my god, but why forgetting Bill? If the 1991-1994 period was so brilliant for the band it's also thanks to his contribution.

    *R.E.M. best band ever!*

  • timeless music wot a song, truely brilliant. moving, epic, touching brilliant music thank you mr buck, mills, stipe.(berry). mike mills you are a god.

  • what is this song about?

It's so good but i can' figure it.

  • Fuck OFF , I am not a big fun but I can say that about a such a big band !!!!

  • some memory...

  • love the sound of the mandolin. i like bands that use an array of instruments for body

  • I don't know a single person who doesn't like REM

  • i know, but i cannot understand them though:) REM forever.

  • REM a band that stands the test of time and will because of songs like this

  • One of the most beautifully beguiling and healing songs ever

  • Well summed up, this song seems to touch a deep part of myself i find.

  • one thing about REM they haven't really changed their style much but decades later they are still making great songs

  • triste,ma bellissima canzone..

  • i can't even put into words how much i love rem

  • i love this song a great deal

  • woah! is that bill berry on the bass???

  • Grandi grandi grandi!!!!!

Fra i migliori artisti nella storia della musica!

  • R.E.M.

    E.M.

    M.

  • m.

    e.

    r.

  • Some of the most talented artist ever have a different sexual preference. There's Stipe, Mercury... Hell, who knows what Michael Jackson is into now.

None of that matters if you are talented.

  • what does that mean.... bono is a better artist because he is straight?... don't forget david bowie, elton john, morrissey, etc. etc.

  • What? Do you have trouble reading.

  • ur an idiot....seriously..idiot.

  • out of time

  • love this song!!!

    love REM !!!

  • i thought bill liked the drums:)

  • "i had too much to drink and i did'nt think, did'nt think of you "

wow theres a lot in that line.

fucking love this song from the first time i heard it.

rem have created some of the most beautiful songs of our generation and im not even gay ! lol

  • Neither am I. But actually he's bi-sexual. And music is music isn't it? You love the words because you connect to to them. It doesn't matter what his orientaton is.

  • Damn right, one of my favourite REM lyrics as you say there's a helluva lot in it

  • bellissima.. r.e.m. = la mia vita

  • una delle + belle canzoni di sempre....

  • the best rem song!!!!!!!

  • Just wonderful. But is this really from 1993? I'd put my money on 1991, or -92 at the latest.

  • Yeag I'd go for 91 (check the hat, that's pure Out of Time and in 93 they were wearing silver trousers etc.) Nerd alert here ...

  • Exactly, the look is very much like on mtv unplugged from '91. Maybe this show was simply aired in '93. And nerd alert here, replying like a second after your posting...

  • Ha ha - we're saddos but in the best possible way ...

  • I think this was recorded on 14th March, with Losing My Religion, just prior to the Borderline show in London.

  • Ok, thanks for the insight. So it would have been '91, then?

  • Unbelievably amazing. I love these guys.

  • pure quality- thank you and good night

  • Scrubs always leads me to good songs..

  • wow i just finished watching "my fishbowl" and just found this song. scrubs is awesome

  • true..

  • This is definitely live, no doubt whatsoever, I have been into this band since they started, a near perfect studio rendition but played and sung live. Beautiful.

  • Yes, definitely. On the original, you can hear Mikey in the background. Here he's not singing.

  • this is a good song

  • Thank you so much for this - I had it on VHS for about 2 years. The whole show was stonking; this was the best.

  • What a beautiful, breath-taking song! Definitely one of their best.

  • Makes me cry every time. Their best song.

  • I can tell you that the whole "hand thing" is a result of the studio requesting that Mr. Stipe not touch the microphone when he recorded this song for the BBC. I forget the reason but I was there. Besides, who care about the hand thing. It's a great friggin son and I couldn't imagine anyone else singing it.

  • I gotta say that of all the songs this band has written this one tops that list, for me, as the most beatiful one of them all. Yes, I love the entire album that this song came from including the quirky shiny happy people with B52 hottie, Kate Pierson. Best thing about this video is that it was made before Bill Berry announced he as leaving after a double aneurism. Good to see him playing here with the band!
