I think the writers wanted it to be modeled after what a second-generation-boy-adventure's family would look like. They already have shown in earlier episodes, and newer ones, situations were Dr. Venture was a friend of the Quest's younger son. There's an episode this season that supports, mostly, my conclusion. Were the "boy adventurers", and "boy detectives" going to therapy. (the therapist was also in an earlier episode where 21 and 24 meet each other IRL for the first time,fyi '_')
Dr. Venture was Jonny's friend when they were growing up. Jonny is the "boy adventurer" that is a junkie now. In the newest season they show Jonny and his old arch-nemesis :)
