  • Thank you - I needed to hear this advice. I was pastel painting a portrait and it was going so well that I felt guilty..... then I totally messed it up and will have to start again. I know what went wrong and now I will make a note of what was right and what was wrong - I will learn. I feel encouraged. Thanks

  • Great advice.

  • Hey, I have a bunch of canvas boards, and I would like to prepre them somehow, so they have tooth and I can do some pastels.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  • Absolutely true, bravo!

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • WOW! I make mental notes, but never wrote them down, so duplicating a successful process in my work has at times been difficult. This is an excellent video and one that will definitely influence my work. Thank you for sharing, five stars!

  • Wow, Tim. Simple idea, but also very profound--I needed to hear this message as I have been in a rut lately with my art. Your attitude, work ethic, and energy (there doesn't seem to be a lazy bone in your body or a lazy cell in your brain!) are terrific. The need for artists to be more strategic in learning WHY things go well or do not go well will certainly save time, frustration, and painting supplies. Thank you SO much. I will subscribe!

  • Thank you so much for your inspiring words. I am going to make more very soon! Thank you again!

  • Hey, this is the ten year old son. I will try out the types of ways to do art.

    thank you, Sam

  • Thank you for that show. I have a 10 year old son that is an exceptional artist at his age. The newspaper is setting up a showing for him. He has only been drawing in pencil. I am trying to get him to try different mediums. He tried drawing the Northern Lights reflecting off a stream in chalk pastels. He got so discouraged. I am not an artist but I think he was trying to color it like a crayon. I told him he had to keep trying and to learn from his mistakes. This will help. Thank you.

  • Thanks so much for your comments. Let him know to start off with just black white and grays....don't worry about the colors in pastel just yet...also charcoal would be a good intro as well. He should also start out with a hard pastels like Cretacolor's pastel carre.

    Take Care,

    Timothy

  • Dear Timothy ,

This is really very good and useful.*****

    Thank you very much ,

    -Mehmet-

  • i didnt know you are a teacher.. that is wonderful.. it is just what i want to do when i end studying art. I tend to write notes, but not the way youre saying. i will try it, it is surely useful, thanks timothy!

  • My God, I've met my Doppelganger! Tim, you look just like me, dude! I also use the note-taking method you describe, and after 14 years, these notebooks fill a carton. The only difference is I'm doing it for filmmaking rather than painting. But regardless of the artform, it's good advice.

  • Hey Dave, Thanks for checking out my videos. Yes, you are the better looking twin:) It is cool that I have a look a-like in Australia!

I am sure when you look at those notebooks from years ago, they are incredibly insightful! Perhaps raw material for a book?

  • Hello Tim. I am learning so much from your videos. Thank you.

  • im always learning and teaching myself new things with every painting.Thank you for the good advise :)

  • I have Favorited this video as well as 5*. I chuckle to myself about this pointer because I journal daily and always write about my paintings and it helps me sort out problems and come up with ideas.

BUT I don't save my journals. I see now the foolishness of this. Your note taking process is very wise. Brilliant, actually. How many other professions have I been in where I wrote down notes and saved them in notebooks for future reference? Duh.

  • Yes! This is very helpful. Although I started taking notes when I subscribed to your videos, this has helped me feel more of a sense of organization. The rationale you discuss for note taking is awesome. You are such a serious artist, and your work exhibits this quality you possess. Thank you so much. :) Sonjia
