I read earlier that the gun doubled, that is BOTH barrels went off simultaneously; that is why it rocked him and he lost control. I have a four bore. It is fantastic to shoot. But it is a single barrel. I would like to know what loads were in this gun and if it was a modern load or a black powder load.

Actually the 4 bore and 8 bore guns were loaded with ball OR shot,depending on quarry. In late 19th century the sportsmen preferred the smoothbore loaded with a solid ball as it meant little or no resistance to the ball when fired whereas the RIFLED barrel of the .577 or .450 actually caused the lead bullet to loose momentum because of the spinning in the barrel. Of course what the rifled gun lost in bullet speed compared to the smoothbore gun it made up for in actual long range accuracy.

Even so, back in the day with black powder, these weapons all fired thier rounds at nearly the same velocity, and the bigger the round ball, the worse the penetration. a 1/2 pound ball of lead at around 1200 fps isn't going to penetrate well, but it should knock an elephant unconcious long enough to do him in with additional shots!

@blacksun2175 if you try it it's really enjoyable but with the fact that its a heavier gun moving back it means that the recoil is longer. so hold on tight when you fire it. it'll lift you back a bit, but it wont hurt. if you'd like you can buy limbsaver pads and it'll make you feel absolutely no pain, the gun will still fly back a bit, but you wont even feel it.

If I remember correctly. Bores for shotguns are how many lead balls equal 1 pound that can fit down the barrel. Also called gauge. In the case of a 4 bore, four lead balls=1 pound, 8=8 lead balls, 12=12 lead balls, and so on. This works until you get to .410

Yes. Your are correct. But a smooth bore gun is not always a "shotgun" some were introduced like rifles (but smooth bores) to shoot metalic cased bullets like the 4 bore, 2 bore and "Full Bore" = (a 1 pound lead ball)

The .410 cal. smooth bore gun was also one of these types. But by that time the measuments were in inches. The bore of this 36 Gauge (now as a shotgun) is .410 inch. A pure lead ball to fit the inside dia. weighs 1/36th of a pound. Some very rare 4 bores were rifled.

No. It shoots a single bullet / brass cartridge out of a bore size - that IF it were a solid lead round ball, would take 4 to make a pound. But the bullet is more like a little more than half a round ball with a flat base, round nose, and copper jacket. But some of the older rounds of ammo were made by loading a brass case with black powder (not smokeless) and then a single solid lead round = 1/4 pound seated into the primed case. ( A shotgun is a gun that shoots shot) = many pellets.
