How do I test for battery drain?

The light will turn on with most modern cars because they almost always have slow drains due to the various computers. You have to use an ammeter in order to see the exact amp drain and compare that with what the service manual says is normal.

Always connect the test light leads between battery negative cable END and bttery POST only. But thanks for pointing it out. Rich

i thought he said battery pos which he did he should of said battery negative lead.some idiot would put it on the positive (pos) and say i got a short! hey ya never know

Actually, this will not work well for most car, if it even work.

First of all, when you first connect the battery the many computers will start to do some diagnostic and other stuff. Depending on the car this can be a few amps drain for a few seconds. It can take like 15 minutes for the many computers to go back to sleep. Only then you can, with an ampmeter, verify what is the current drain.

I agree...there is a sleep timer module used especially on newer vehicles to prevent battery brain drain. My method is good usually for older vehicles like those made before 1995.
