Lest we forget. This is cinematic history. It shows that racism is learned. A young Judy Garland also appeared in black face. Blacks were allowed to appear in movies with whites but not until roles played by Sidney Poitier did the subservient role attitude began to slowly be broken down.
It took three generations or 76 years to get to where we are now in regards to race and sensitivity. I don't think we should look backwards that far into the past and pass judgement for what was then a social norm. Just like I don't think people in the year 2086 should look back at us and pass judgement on us. Yet we know that they will! People evolve and we can expect constant changes in behavioral attitudes. It's what we will become that's important.
The play they're showing (in the film) is Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was written in the 1800s. It's not surprising it's racist. It's interesting to watch these old films... the sexism is mind-boggling as well!
This clip IS offensive, but it is so important to keep it around to educate ourselves and future generations. It is a valuable addition to the history of race relations in this country.
@runrockwater It is called blackface, black people were not allowed to perform in movies, and on stage so white people would create a stereotyped caricature of a black person. it actually played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist images, attitudes and perceptions worldwide. later on, black artists also performed in blackface. it was a form in its own right, until it ended with the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s
Shirley Jane Temple VOWED that someday things would be different. As a Jesus person she invited the negros to "GET ON BOARD" the Jesus train. In 1966 she purchased a LA studio under the names of Estelle Parsons/Elizabeth Quinn & promoted negros in movies like In the Heat of the Night & gave Morgan Freeman his acting name. It is not easy to change things. We are all a part of the process. Jesus said, as did the prophets, that God's House, would become a "light to the nations."
The actors were not at fault. Like 'Gone With The Wind' this is history, good and the bad.
All black parts were played with white people painting their face back then.
Delete history like this and you lose proof of how far we have come over the years. Its easier to believe if you can see it with your own eyes. I hope my great great grand children see this and know the bad part of it.
Look up the history of the Glob Trotters and see some wasted talent.
DON'T ERASE IT! It's historical proof. In Canada they want to ban, "To Kill a Mockingbird." What next? Tom Sawyer? Nigger should be in all the dictionaries. I promoted negros & was called a "light skinned negro" by some & a "nigger lover". "Oh sweetie...you don't know what nigger means at all. It means, "I don't give a s..t that you call me nigger." It means, "I will crawl to the finish line." It is like the male version of the word, "bitch". Be it black or white...it is a powerful word!
Poor Shirley Temple she did'nt understand racism at that timeshe was just doing her job..And hollywood in the 1930's did'nt give a damn about black people as long as it entertained white audience.
