I LOVE the lyrics, much better than the English (can't judge the French one as I don't know the language). They're so well written and achingly beautiful.
@fabptitpom I never said it did. I wasn't even wandering about it. That wasn't the point of my comment (which you obviously failed to understand..). I had simply stated that there are lines in the text I like, that's all.
There are two lines in the Russian version, which I absolutely LOVE and they give me chills every time (I'm not sure how close the Russian is to the original French, beacuse I only know little French, but I love these lines, still :)).
In Russian: "В раба мужчину превращает красота."
In English: "Beauty turns a man into a slave." "I'll sell my soul to the devil for one night with you."
I love the Russian version...and I know very little of the language. I would say that the French and Russian versions of all the songs are my favorites (I actually speak French though...plus they're the originals). The English versions are clearly the weakest and the Italian ones are surprisingly average for such an otherwise beautiful language.
Russian version is one of my favorite versions of this song. Perfection! I also love the lyrics of the song here. I don't understand however how can people say that italian version is the best, I have heard it, it's ok, but definitely not better than this. Also it's the first time I hear people say that russian language is not melodic but harsh. What? I would definitely not say that about russian language, it is a soft language to me...
@carolineptenchick Well, kepping absolute accuracy *and* rhythm and rhyme is hardly possible. I speak both languages (though, as I said, the translation itself is not mine) and I think the translator made the best possible one could make while pursuing both goals.
@alexmagnus1 i think u misunderstood me.. i love the russian version.. i speak russian too.. obviously it can't be word-for-word.. i said the translation into english isn't very accurate.. but still FRENCH/ORIGINAL = BEST!!!
@alexmagnus1 I really like your English translation of the Russian Belle lyrics (i speak Russian too)...though French is still my most favourite version...but thanks again for the lovely English translation :)

@emeela89 And it's a bit understanding as "Notre Dame de Paris" is a French musical written from the novel of the same name (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame in English for those who don't know) written by Victor Hugo... :-)
Imagine an English song better after translated in French... Impossible... :-P
Where can I find videos such as this, or Juno and Avos Miserables and others? There are such good actors and singers in Russia tey must be somewhere....
All three: Every night and every day I only see her before me I do not pray to Our Lady, but only to her Wait, Do not leave me, you mad/impossible dream Beauty turns a man into a slave And after death I will not find peace
I will sell my soul for a night with you
*this is the end of my translation. I hope you enjoyed
Phoebus: Dream, a luminous dream of happiness, my Esmeralda A moan, a moan betraying my sinful passion, Esmeralda It left my lips and, like a stone rolled down And [it] broke the heart of fair haired Fleur-de-Lys. Holy Virgin, you are powerless to help me I cannot fight against this forbidden love Wait, Do not leave me, you mad/impossible dream Beauty turns a man into a slave And after death I will not find peace I will sell my soul for a night with you
Frollo (cont'd) This impudent gypsy girl ruined my life It is such a pity, As if by the cruel joke of fate,
I am dressed in these priest clothes And fated forever to endure this hellish suffering And after death I will not find peace I will sell my soul to the devil for a night with you
Paradise, your embraces would bring me to paradise Give me hope, oh you, the one who cursed me
I want you to know that I find strange pleasure in the blind power of those sinful thoughts Oh, I'm a madman, I never knew a passion such as this I am obsessed with this dissolute girl, as if possessed by the devil
Light illuminated my tortured soul No, I will not disrupt your tranquillity by letting you know that I feel passion towards you Delirium, midnight delirium is again torturing my heart Oh Esmeralda, I dared to desire you My heavy cross, a constant seal of ugliness is upon me I would accept compassion instead of love No, Miserable hunchback, with a curse written on my forehead
I'll never be happy on Earth And after death I will not find peace I will sell my soul to the devil For a night with you
Here is my English translation of the Russian Belle lyrics. Not word-for-word, but the meaning, at least the way I (native Russian speaker) understand it. I hope this will be useful for non-Russian speakers. The translations are in the next few comments.
"fille de joie"="the girl of joy"="девушка радостей"...
I am Italian, I speak fluent french and English, and I live in Valencia, Spain. So yes, I speak all these languages and I still think french version is better because it is the language on which this musical was first created. it is a novel by Victor Hugo, a french writer based in a french church in the freaking french capital. The lyrics from the Latin versions (french, spanish and italian) are pretty much the same.
I believe that when something is made for the first time, it is best. whether it's in french or in any other language. In this case, the french musical was first, and all versions are just a remake from the original and the songs are translated into those languages, they're not going to be the same words because they need to keep the rhythm, but they have basically the same concept. I don't know why people keep arguing on which version is better.
I love this version. That probably wouldn't be the case if I wasn't a native Russian speaker, it would probably sound funny to me. Yet the lyrics of this version I find much more beautiful than the original .
The last verse:
Day and night all I see is her
It's not Madonna that I pray to, but only her
Stop, don't leave me my mad dream
Beauty turns a man into a slave
Even after my death I will not find peace
I'll sell my soul to the Devil for a night with you
@516Emilia Do you speak French as well as you speak Russian to judge which version is better? As far as I see you are translating this lyric to English, not to French.
@MaverickOOO1 jeez, do get worked up lol. Where did I say that the Russian version is better? I'm not saying that. What I said was from my point of view as a native Russian speaker. Of course, the French version is better because it is the original , and sounds beautiful.I just said that I like the lyrics better, not that they are, it is only my opinion.
@MaverickOOO1 ?? because the majority of people can speak english. Why am I not allowed to leave comments in english?? Plus, I don't have a russian keyboard right now
@516Emilia If you don't have a Russian keyboard search for Russian on-screen keyboard. It will take care of your problem. If you want to leave a comment in the language of the majority you should do it in Mandarin. If you really care about readers of this forum you should leave your comments in Russian.
@MaverickOOO1 what?? I can type in whatever language I want .Mandarin? What does that have to do with anything??On youtube the majority of comments are left in english. Thus, I translated in english because most people can understand english besides their own language, and this video doesn't have subtitles. Why do you keep rambling on about this lol Notice how you started all of it. just relax and leave me alone.
@516Emilia Quazimodo: Light illuminated my haggard soul No! Your quiet I will not break the passion. Delirium, night delirium worried my heart me again Oh, Esmeralda, I dare you... My heavy curce - ugliness forever, It seems to me that her mercy - this is love... Even after my death I will not find peace I'll sell my soul to the Devil for a night with you
Ia iz Bolgaria.Bila v Moskva, kagda uslishala Belle.Mne tak ponravilos eto vipolnenie, chto i ne hotela drugoe slushat.Potom slushala ego i na francuzki i uvidila, chto i ono ochen horoshoe.I dve versii prekrasni !!
I think that the lyrics of the russian version is the most emotional and full of content ...And I adore the russian Phoebus - Антон Макарский - he is the best!!!!
Yes they are very good as secondary translated version go. Nothing to say about the talent there. BUT Notre Dame de Paris is French and always will be Vicor Hugo wrote it in French about a French cathedral and a French period.
I speak both Russian and French and this particular piece needs to be in French. Can it be tranlated in any language? Of course! Do you lose un petit je ne sais quoi in the translation... of course you do.
(still good actors/singers in this version as well!)
I saw many comments from French users that Russian version isn't good... so I wasn't expecting myself to enjoy it this much! :) I love it! (Except for Quasimodo's voice) I like it a lot. And the girl playing Esmeralda actually looks young, innocent, and naive like how Esmeralda is supposed to be! Haven't heard her sing yet but just by the looks, this is my favorite Esmeralda. :)
I was born in Britain and my languages are English, Spanish/Italian and Russian - and I can say that Russian is by far the most soulful language of the four. It has an incredible flexibility, words are like lego to be played around with at your hearts content, and people use words to express feeling in a way I rarely experience in the other languages. Words like "ubayukivayushayasya" make my heart melt.
In the Russian version the focus is on the life sutiation of those 3 men and their suffering because of their desire for Esmeralda. The lyrics are good, but I prefer the French lyrics...and yes I am a native Russian speaker. Just my opinion, of course. :)
In the French version, the focus is more on desire that the 3 men feel towards Esmeralda, on her beauty and on their attitude towards her as a person. Though there are some references towards suffering as well (Quasimodo talks about 'hell, opening under his feet', Frollo talks about a conflict between his desire and his religious beliefs) Some say that the French lyrics are vulgar: I don't agree. The lyrics are often erotic in a very beautiful, poetic way, so I don't see anything vulgar there.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Vozmozhno ona simpatichna i tancujet nemnogo, no pojet ........ Nu skazhem ne na urovne. U russkih chuvstva na lice , v razmahivanii ruk , v begotne. A francuzi sderzhani , no i bez lishnih telodvizhenij oni virazhajut chuvstva siljneje , krasiveje, elegantno.
Vse jaziki zvuchat prelestno, esli zvuchat iz ust professionalov. I vse-taki russkaja versija luchshe s professionalnoj tochki zrenija. Bessporno, francuzskaja versija toze ochenj horosha. No, opjatj ze - skolko ljudej, stolko i mnenij. Mi vse raznie i eto normalno vosprinimatj iskustvo po raznomu....A chto kasaetsja russkih - oni mogut igratj kogo ugodno lucshe, chem kto bi to ni bil.Russkie - ochenj talantlivi.
I LOVE the lyrics, much better than the English (can't judge the French one as I don't know the language). They're so well written and achingly beautiful.

Dream, my bright blissful dream, oh Esmeralda
Scream, sinful craving's scream, oh Esmeralda
Seemed...to break my lips and like a stone fall down with ease
And then the heart broke of the fair-haired Fleur-de-Lys
Oh Holy Virgin, you can't help me from above
I was not fated to escape forbidden love
Stay, please do not leave me the sweet madman's dream I crave
Compelling beauty can make any man a slave
And after death my soul shall not again subdue
I'll sell my soul to Satan for one night with you

Fie.. the blind rule of sinful thought is so sweet
Sky... and the gipsy girl in my heart compete
Why...does your embrace mean more than Heaven to me now?
Or give me hope, my curse, and I'll repent, I vow
That gipsy girl forever has ruined my life
I was a madman not to know desire, strife
Fie.. The taunting destiny has bound me to my fate
In hell and torture I'm condemned in aeon's wait
And after death my soul shall not again subdue
I'll sell my soul to Satan for one night with you

Glow... lit a way for me through hell and fire.
No...I won't burden you with my desire
Woe... the midnight ranting has again shattered my heart
Oh Esmeralda, how I yearn when we're apart!
My cross a burden my disfigured frame shall bear
And for my love compassion I agree to share
No... an outcast hunchback with a curse upon my face
Upon the Earth I'll suffer anguish and disgrace
And after death my soul shall not again subdue
I'll sell my soul to Satan for one night with you

Phoebus: Dream, a luminous dream of happiness, my Esmeralda A moan, a moan betraying my sinful passion, Esmeralda It left my lips and, like a stone rolled down And [it] broke the heart of fair haired Fleur-de-Lys. Holy Virgin, you are powerless to help me I cannot fight against this forbidden love Wait, Do not leave me, you mad/impossible dream Beauty turns a man into a slave And after death I will not find peace I will sell my soul for a night with you

Frollo (cont'd) This impudent gypsy girl ruined my life It is such a pity, As if by the cruel joke of fate,
I am dressed in these priest clothes And fated forever to endure this hellish suffering And after death I will not find peace I will sell my soul to the devil for a night with you
dzve 6 months ago
Part 2 (Frollo)

The lyrics from the Latin versions (french, spanish and italian) are pretty much the same.
pvkjell 7 months ago
I believe that when something is made for the first time, it is best. whether it's in french or in any other language. In this case, the french musical was first, and all versions are just a remake from the original and the songs are translated into those languages, they're not going to be the same words because they need to keep the rhythm, but they have basically the same concept. I don't know why people keep arguing on which version is better.

the russian version of phebus is the best! x)

MaverickOOO1 7 months ago
@MaverickOOO1 jeez, do get worked up lol. Where did I say that the Russian version is better? I'm not saying that. What I said was from my point of view as a native Russian speaker. Of course, the French version is better because it is the original , and sounds beautiful.I just said that I like the lyrics better, not that they are, it is only my opinion.

MaverickOOO1 7 months ago
@MaverickOOO1 ?? because the majority of people can speak english. Why am I not allowed to leave comments in english?? Plus, I don't have a russian keyboard right now
516Emilia 7 months ago 2

Words like "ubayukivayushayasya" make my heart melt.

dzve 9 months ago
dzve 9 months ago
In the Russian version the focus is on the life sutiation of those 3 men and their suffering because of their desire for Esmeralda. The lyrics are good, but I prefer the French lyrics...and yes I am a native Russian speaker. Just my opinion, of course. :)
dzve 9 months ago
In the French version, the focus is more on desire that the 3 men feel towards Esmeralda, on her beauty and on their attitude towards her as a person. Though there are some references towards suffering as well (Quasimodo talks about 'hell, opening under his feet', Frollo talks about a conflict between his desire and his religious beliefs) Some say that the French lyrics are vulgar: I don't agree. The lyrics are often erotic in a very beautiful, poetic way, so I don't see anything vulgar there.

GreenBaldrick 9 months ago
