Glad you liked it! It may be easier to attched it first but keep in mind if the mailbox is heavy it may move your post and make it harder to plum, ie keep it straight. As for attaching the box to the post, I first attached a 1 x 6 then attached thebox to the 1 x 6. The reason for this was the predrilled holes in the box were to wide apart to attach it to the 4 x 4 directly.
Thanks for the video. Very informative, glad I watched this as I didn't think to add stones to the bottom of the hole first.
Couple questions...
Would it be easier to attach the mailbox to the post prior to setting it? Did you attach your mailbox directly to the 4"x4" or did you attach a piece of plywood to the 4"x4" and attach the mailbox to that?
@JonO387: Setting a mailbox is more than just digging a hole... unless your mailbox is simply just a hole in the ground, but I doubt your mail ca
Yes, you do, and if you took a few minutes to watch it you saw that I pointed out the need to measure correctly, to call your locate utility company so you don't hit any utility lines, etc.
Very helpful--especially the information about placement of the mailbox far enough from the curb and at the correct height from the street. I also thought the tip about adding gravel to the bottom is great.
Steve made me feel much better about attempting this complex job. I have been up for many nights unable to sleep because I was stressed out about attempting my post installation. Now I am completely at ease. The calmness in his voice made me feel like I could easily complete this task if I follow his instructions in a slow methodical approach. I know now that I will sleep easy because I can put in my post and I will dream about my hero, Steve, from Locking Security Mailbox. Thanks Steve!
Thank you for the very informative instructions on how to set a mailbox post. Most useful was the information on the height of the mailbox and the distance from the curb.
bc of a girl who was backing out of my driveway and completely raped my mailbox, i am now here.

Do people really need a video to show them how to dig a hole?

Thanks for your comment however contacting your local utility is mentioned at 3:50 before you dig so you can have the utilities marked.
