Funland? damn i used to play driving USA all the time there, and visited Segaworld, Alien war, The imaginator lots. many good memories. its a shame its all crap now.
We lost something in the 90s, it was called pure originality. The urgent need to be different even though the four walls of society were closing in is far stronger than the gaga of today's 'pop culture'.
There's scaffolding in the Trocadero now and there's no Coke machine infront of the Rocket Escalator. Infact I'd say they're totally open-heart-surgering the top floors for that Pod Hotel.
The chances of sneaking up there uncaught are even less likely what with security.
@SheledUmlal And now the Rocket Escalator has been removed and what with 1 month and 1 year to go they've got to remove the uppers. Or not and make it into something worthwhile!!
I'm glad I had the opportunity to go there when I was younger, great memories! also there was an amazing sega branded arcade in the Yoham Plaza/oriental city that has since closed. Playing Street fighter EX while surrounded by chain smoking japanese guys, watching how people play, pounding music. : )
Funland arcade was part of Trocadero long before Sega arrived (used to be on the first floor). Here's a video of Funland taken in 1990: watch?v=ZjLx_lSYc7A
When Sega pulled out, Funland shut their old site and took over the lower sections that remain today. The top section has been completely dormant for 10+ years (and apparently has dust levels over 1m thick)! However this year, permission was given to convert that area into a hotel for the London 2012 Olympics.
@RJAY63 crap there must be some stuff up there from Sega thats worth something.. tempted to go there and sneak up there to check it out.. prolly too late now :(
@misterbearbe You would need a dust mask first! Besides, anything that wasvaluable is probably long gone. I'll be visiting Funland soon and I'll see if any building work has started for that hotel.

When I was a kid I did an assignment on "where I would most like to go" and it was Segaworld. I gues it will never happen, even though I've been Trocadero a billion times, Sonic was my hero.....
WOW, im amazed and gutted at the same time. Really sad that its closed down but I never even knew it existed until this weekend. I went to London and visited the Trocadero as i'd heard it had a great arcade. I have to say, it does, its by far the best arcade i've ever been to so I dont know why all u lot are complaining, but then I never got to go to Sega World! I wish I had cos now im really curious. I saw the escalator blocked off by the coke machine and I really wanna know whats up there :(
I was there in 1998 and it was pretty amazing. As you were going up the escalator you'd have a vertical drop theme park ride going down the middle. Upstairs was full of arcade machines, and theme park rides.
Sometimes, the Rocket Escalator is used as an entrance to FunLand, a replacement of SEGA World. This arcade takes two of the five floors of SEGA WORLD. The other three floors were closed down, and were only used for other purposes.
Remember going to this place on opening night when I was about 10. It was pretty amazing, but the problem is they didn't move with the times and video games move on pretty quick.
i went to the Trocadero 2 weeks ago with my sister we walked around the old ruins of sega world lol it's a cinima now it use to be Alien wars, based on the movie Aliens but that got ditched for sega world now the old sega themepark is now a cinima again like it always should of been. meh there is a great anime shop there though i'm going pack for more accsessorys n stuff soon.
if thats whats it's called then yes. i picked up a new wallet to replace my tatty fallen apart one XD shame i wanted a 1up mushroom wallet but they didn't haz it.
I knew that place thanks to a paper of publicity witch came with a Sega Saturn´s videogame, I was 10, maybe 9 years old and I said " One day I will go to that place; Picadilly Circus".
Well, 3 years ago I went to London and Logically, I went to visit the Picadilly Circus, and in that moment I remembered the Sega World, so i went to the Trocadero and... I found nothing!! Well, There was several floors of machines but there were ussual machines! there were not any VR machines or similar...
I visitied the Trocodero today and was so depressed. Its so shitty... 99% of the themeing has gone... its bland... shit... no rides, just arcade machines and dodgems.... its all falling apart... the top escalator that used to take you to "The Beast in Darkness" ride is closed... the lighting is so shit now... there are shitty little shops all over the place completely unrelated to "funland"....
ARGRGH its so depressing, anyone who visited Sega World will understand how magical that place was...
I shed a tear when I saw it all gone. I remember going there when I was 6, and again when I was 9. I heard my friends say it shut down, when I visited London again to see it I just couldn't believe my eyes.
Man... sega world was an amazing place, I guess the closest thing to it now is Disney Quest. This place had some of the most unique rides in the world... I mean they were so good. I reaaly, desperately want some footage of even a picture of "The House of Grandish"... that was such a scary ride. You just sit in a pitch black house staring into a mirror, and they chill you with 3D sound narration and holograms.
and btw at 2.21, this actually happens when u put on the vr! People changes clothes!
I remember when i was like 5 i went there and it was amazing. I went on a few of the rides i regret not going on some now. I went back here a few weeks ago and i never knew that sgaworld was gone. I was kinda dissappointed. Especially when i saw the escalators blocked off. Sega should start over again.
shut up.. shut up now.. segaworld was a arcade to destroy all arcades.. how many arcades had 6 FLOORS of games and simulators? NOW its a disgrace because they took it down.. before it was a magical place which i found a privalege to go to..
It was great, but I was, like, 9 years old. I don't remember much. Only that the escalators where very impressive and scary looking, and that getting from one floor to the other was like finding your way through a maze (It still is that way with what it's left of it).
And there were these 3D atractions and a very flashy merch shop with Sonic stuff.
my god, bring back SEGA world! I mean look at the place now, its nothign compared to wut it used to look like! In place of wut used to be the Pepsi drop is now some crappy bouncy thing.
fucking hell!!!!! just listening to you lot, you still have a really cool arcade still at least, isn't it enough? we had namco wonderpark which was the best arcade in sheffield til bastard meadowhall made them shut down so those greedy cunts could put three restraurants in its places. whats more namco oftered to pay them more that summed up the same ammount to open three restraurants but still told to go and that was last october just gone.
tell me about it, least I still got centretaiment, only problem is they don't get the lastest releases as much and not as many in and worst of all not japanese imports. wish we had trocadero or the trafford centre in sheffield or any shopping centre that has a cool arcade like trocadero (though I've never been but would like to).
are you telling me all that stuff was inside stuff as the soft play area and the dodgem cars and all that were inside for 3 years after closure? what a waste of space and money
Well the dodgems wer emoved ot the ground floor. Mcdonalds is shut (but u can still see the sign if you crank your head up the escalator). The big simulators were sold to France & Spain. Sucks.. But Troc is still the best arcade in the UK :-S
ZOMG! one of my best childhood memories is of 1:10 !!
