To be honest, it is pretty easy.

If you lose, you get an extra chance without any penalty. Even worse, Bowser keeps his current health.

So it's basically you having infinite health.

What I never got was why Bowser's flight machine thing only has one tiny propeller, the ability to attach to two bullet bill shooters with just about infinite bullet bills along with ulimited iron ball dropping (this was taken from several games). Not to mention the heaviest one of them all, BOWSER... How does that thing fly???
