I replaced a '99 Si with a '10 MS3 2years ago..no comparison. Mazda wis hands down. I test -drove a new Si and drove straight back to the Mazda dealership. This combined with my Accord EX's second transmission failure (I bought it new) means I'm done with Honda for life. I do like my lawn mower though lol!

Im very aware of that. I was pointing out that in the same catagory. I compared the LXi to the standard155hp Mazda 3 and not theturbo charged Mazda Speed. The point I was making is that each car in every catagory beared the same results. More torque and a better transmission along with a great deal more horsepower from Mazda than from Honda. However, Honda is like the tourtise from the tourtise and hare race. It will last longer for quality and reliability and Mazda will wear down faster.
@Xcorgi I don't know how true you could say that is. I have a Mazdaspeed6 with 98k all original miles (and counting), all put on by me. I've had no major issues with the car other than having to fix the rear driver's side axle because of a pothole I hit. Of course that has nothing to do with reliability and more my not seeing the pothole and the sheer force messing up the axle... the same of which can happen in a Honda.

Of course Mazda makes great cars that last a long time too. Just not as long as Honda. They may make fast cars but you reach 60,000 or more miles and they start to fall apart.
@kingkopec69 i haggled an si with nav for $22,387! because no one buys manual transmission these days if your local honda dealer has one in inventory bargain down and get as close to the invoice price as possible!!
Taxes and fees came to about $2000. The GTI isn't really a sports car by any measure so it shouldn't cost you any more to insure than a typical econo-box.
As far as performance, it's between the Si and MS3, closer to the MS3. But in terms of refinement and cabin quality its up there with Audi and BMW. Even in a base model GTI nothing feels cheap.
@luminaeus more power to you man. I needed the Si because I drive a lot and needed something that gets more than 30mpg while not being a bore to drive. Also honda has amazing reliability and resale value. I would have picked the GTI (dsg really interested me) if the parts for german cars weren't so expensive. I owned a passat vr6 for my first car and it was not fun to repair... so no one car is the jack of all trades: to each their own
@frqs0017 Not really... the Si is Honda's performance version of the regular Civic. The Mazdaspeed3 is Mazda's performance version of the regular 3. It's not Mazda's fault they decided to go turbo, blame Honda.

@squeekieballs Type-R has different cars. Not just the integra like you're assuming he means. The integra type-r has 195hp and I think it has LSD, and different suspension. GS-R has 170hp. There's many others as far as civics and integra. They have a 220hp 06-08 type-r civic which weighs less than our Si with only 197hp. They also have a 240hp version, which is even lighter, and then The mugen RR advanced with 260hp, and over 300lbs less than the 240hp version weighing only 2414lbs...just saying
And, the problem isn't so much lack of power more than it is handling.The upcoming Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ will only have 200 hp but it handles so well. Why? it supposedly (i haven't driven it) has a lower center of gravity and carefully setup suspension. Maybe Honda should go back to using double wishbones? Maybe not? A lighter frame? Lighten it up? That would be nice.

honda is soft. the current si handles no better than the 2000si, and they have been tested head to head. though honda is very reliable i'd take a ms3 everytime over the si.
Honda is getting soft. The new SI is a case and point, they focused on MPG not performance. If I buy a sports car I know the fuel economy is going to suck. If I want fuel economy go get a standard civic. Thats why I have an S2000 the last true sports car from Honda.

Civic's are so over done it makes me sick. I've drove an si and did like it, but I own a Mazda 3 and I'd never trade for one period. 2ndly, Even if there was a small abrupt turn and one was 2 seconds behind, that can still be a wide gap of distance. One is braking and one accelerating, that's an even greater distance than straightline.

People were saying "it has a turbo and only won by 2 seconds?!" using only time to judge distance. And my point wasn't to say they are doing 100mph, my point was that 2 seconds could be slaughter depending on how fast they were going. My 350hp Mazdaspeed6 is "only 2 seconds" behind a Z06 in the 1/4 mile. Might not sound that bad.
Civic Type R has no turbo lag compared to the MS3. On a proper race track, I'd definitely choose the Civic over the MS3. Civic's are also monsters once a turbocharger is strapped on.

On my '07 Civic Si Sedan, I had to install anti-roll bars, a strut tower brace, and a C pillar brace. This stiffened the car up very nicely. I also use high performance brake pads and good summer tires on track days. It's a fun car. I think I'm going to get a 5.0 Mustang GT next though...
Retain the (RSX type-R suspension and platform or the s2000 suspension and platform make 2+2) with the k20a2 engine 6speed RWD with a curb weight around 2600-2700lbs. Targeting the FR-S, Rx8,370z
Mazda is fast stock but oversteers due to massive hp to front wheels and problems with computer when tunning even with performance chip. Honda I love because they give you a car and you do all the tuning that's why they've been such a success in street race world and I heard what those k24s can do boosted.

@ColdNapalm42 you could probably get the same power from other engines like srt4's, cobalt ss,evo's,sti's, etc. you might even be able to get more but honda engines are known to last and its amazing how much power you could get without rebuilding the motor.Its the power to weight ratio that gets them to do 10 and under in quarter mile. Not saying there the best cars but its amazing what car enthusiasts do with them.
@omgfroobynoobs STOCK honda engines are reliable. Once you turbo them to get that crazy power...well then you can kiss that reliability goodbye. And by the time you have a honda engine generating power for a 10 second car...your running a broken engine. The same is true for a most 10 second anything. And yes the civic chassis is light...it also has crap suspension setting compared to whats out there for motorsport. Honda is suppose to sell just the shell at some point and I fully support that.
If I'm honest I've been a Honda fan for a really long time but they finally lost me with this new Si. I've seen it many times already, tried it for a bit, and was let down by so many aspects of it. Honda has officially become way too commercialized. It really makes me sad as a JDM car enthusiast. Hence why I've opted to buy the new Mazdaspeed3. I've tried it and loved it. It has the feel the older Sis and even the old Type Rs used to have.
If Honda wants to do better go back and look at the Integra Type R, The NSX, the S2000, the 99-00 Civic SI and IMPROVE on that. Stop undertuning the motors. Not everyone hates the "noise" of an engine. Make a PERFORMANCE edition of a car model. It's not that hard. They have done it before.

Honda is getting soft. The new SI is a case and point, they focused on MPG not performance. If I buy a sports car I know the fuel economy is going to suck. If I want fuel economy go get a standard civic. Thats why I have an S2000 the last true sports car from Honda.
PS: 8th gen civic is more fun IMO

@Xcorgi dude OBV mazda will win in a 0-60 it doesnt take a smart ass to know that it has double the tourqe and 60 more HP, it did not stomp its ass 2 seconds is not bad when comparing the power of each, plus the mazda is 5 grand more, honda could easily use that 5 grand to put in a turbo but turbo's in a small displacement engine is hard and expensive to mantain that is why you dont see Speed3 as much.

Very good. I like these reviews better than most! However you guys should compare similar HP. the turbo'd 267hp is more like 300. and the civic is like the 197hp they used to be. ( i drove both and bot a Speed3 lol) I WAS a complete honda Prelude VTEC fan until i got into the Mazdaspeed 3. with the newmotors Mazda put out this year Honda's got a pickle on there hands. $) mpg on the reg. 3?! yah what does the HYBRID get again? have you EVER drove a hybrid? Run the 3 against the wrx again!

It's just pathetic how they make excuses for the Si even when Mazda is the clear winner. If it was the other way around they would not make the same excuses for Mazda. I myself have test driven the 2012 Civic LXi and the top of the line Mazda 3 with 155hp and the Mazda really surprised me! Mazda still manages to give you a sports car even with the 40mpg econo car but Honda is just gives you the econo box and no racey sportiness. Dont take my word for. Test drive both and you will be amazed!

@Xcorgi I drove both and got the same impression. After driving the Honda first I then tried the Mazda 3 thinking it was just like a Ford. I was dead wrong! This car is everything to all people. Mazda gives you a true sports car experience with 40mpg! Also, dont forget the Bose 10 speaker 265 watt sound system Mada gives you.Also, a hatchback is available! Unless you get the Si, Honda only gives you a wimpy 160 watt system. Just as gutless as it's powertrain! Winner? Hands down Mazda 3!!!

I have to agree w/everyone, let's go back to NSX s2k days I've also driven an 01 s2k tons and I love them so much. Disappointed mazda finished only 2 secs faster w/a turbo smh.

But my overall point is that being unaware yet making claims based only on assumption, your assumption of all, can't be justified as correct. Let's say there is an abrupt and sharp turn right before the finish line of the track, causing the car to slow down, then cross the track, their speeds will obviously be slower than that if it was travelling straight.

@TheJuniorCop Okay, fair enough. But again my statement wasn't an assumption but a frame of reference. It wasn't a quote of how fast they were going but a reference to say that 2 seconds can be huge distance wise as opposed to the common assumption that 2 seconds automatically equals small.
2ndly, Even if there was a small abrupt turn and one was 2 seconds behind, that can still be a wide gap of distance. One is braking and one accelerating, that's an even greater distance than straightline.

People were saying "it has a turbo and only won by 2 seconds?!" using only time to judge distance. And my point wasn't to say they are doing 100mph, my point was that 2 seconds could be slaughter depending on how fast they were going. My 350hp Mazdaspeed6 is "only 2 seconds" behind a Z06 in the 1/4 mile. Might not sound that bad.

Civic Type R has no turbo lag compared to the MS3. On a proper race track, I'd definitely choose the Civic over the MS3. Civic's are also monsters once a turbocharger is strapped on.

On my '07 Civic Si Sedan, I had to install anti-roll bars, a strut tower brace, and a C pillar brace. This stiffened the car up very nicely. I also use high performance brake pads and good summer tires on track days. It's a fun car. I think I'm going to get a 5.0 Mustang GT next though...

Mazda is fast stock but oversteers due to massive hp to front wheels and problems with computer when tunning even with performance chip. Honda I love because they give you a car and you do all the tuning that's why they've been such a success in street race world and I heard what those k24s can do boosted.

@ColdNapalm42 you could probably get the same power from other engines like srt4's, cobalt ss,evo's,sti's, etc. you might even be able to get more but honda engines are known to last and its amazing how much power you could get without rebuilding the motor.Its the power to weight ratio that gets them to do 10 and under in quarter mile. Not saying there the best cars but its amazing what car enthusiasts do with them.

And by the time you have a honda engine generating power for a 10 second car...your running a broken engine. The same is true for a most 10 second anything. And yes the civic chassis is light...it also has crap suspension setting compared to whats out there for motorsport. Honda is suppose to sell just the shell at some point and I fully support that.

If I'm honest I've been a Honda fan for a really long time but they finally lost me with this new Si. I've seen it many times already, tried it for a bit, and was let down by so many aspects of it. Honda has officially become way too commercialized. It really makes me sad as a JDM car enthusiast. Hence why I've opted to buy the new Mazdaspeed3. I've tried it and loved it. It has the feel the older Sis and even the old Type Rs used to have.

If Honda wants to do better go back and look at the Integra Type R, The NSX, the S2000, the 99-00 Civic SI and IMPROVE on that. Stop undertuning the motors. Not everyone hates the "noise" of an engine. Make a PERFORMANCE edition of a car model. It's not that hard. They have done it before.
