i grew up in a woodsman /live-off-the-land environment and with a accident and a addiction,i forgot about that way of life ,now years later and with a family and kids of my own dual survival ,and your videos have inspired me to get out in the woods with the kids and show them they dont need fancy/electronics toys to have fun. thanks
Humans have historically had to work to create containers to carry water. Modern times have made this a lot easier. Plastic is light, but can't be placed in a fire to boil water in. It also doesn't last for too long under bad conditions. But it can be selected for size to fit inset into a backpack for a mobile survival kit.
Even for work around the garden, I use a great many 5 gallon buckets for all sorts of things. (used fast food pickle buckets) - I get them for FREE !!!
I use Sea to Summit's 20L "Kitchen Sink" as my lightweight, portable bucket while in the bush. I love it and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
dave great videos ive learned alot from watching your videps. keep it up!!! im curious about that jacket you have hanging in the background ive seen you wear it in multiple videos and curious about what kind it is?
First of all, I want to thank you and your team for what you teach and what you stand for. Secondly, I had a question about power, specifically the laptop you use. Do you utilize standard grid power at the PFS property or do you use another source (i.e. solar, wind, wood gas generator, etc..). Thanks again for your training
The other day you said that the cross on your necklace had a multi use....how does it work? Also, I saw the baking soda video last week, and bought some the other day to stock up ( I bought the cheap store brand) I had heart burn over the Christmas weekend, I did not have any tums or anything else in the house, I took a couple of swigs of baking soda and water, worked like a charm. Love the vids man, keep it up.
When welding with an electric welder. Some people get a weld burn from the flash not the heat. This has been used for weld burn in the eyes as well as other eye related situations. Take an Irish Potato make a 1/2 " cube and mash it into a spoon. Like you mash garlic cloves. Don't use Garlic just Irish Potatoes. This juice will cure weld burn instantly every time. Don
I know you're trying to keep down on unnecessary items but they make a lid for a 5 gallon bucket that has a nice seat cushion on the top. It's about $10. Just another use for Harvey The Bucket...something comfortable to sit on.
thanks dave. finally there is something both entertaining and educational on youtube. this is a great series and im gonna be sorry to see it go. before you end it, could you show us what the inside and the outside of the whole yurt looks like? im pretty sure ive seen all the videos up until now and i dont recall seeing what it looks like on the outside.
Lol that funny that you named your bucket. Do you have any other gear that you have named? I understand that as you use a tool day in and day out we tend to give our gear names. I personally never go into the bush without Shay (my pathfinder knife I named after my wife), Rusty (my British light infantry belt ax), and Bob (my letherman wave). Love your videos and keep up the good work.
Dave I have been checking out the few different applications for smart phones on edible and medicinal plants. There are only a couple out there but they seem decent. Could you share your opinion of them with us as well as maybe a review???
a trick for chaffing is browned flour. My grandma swore by it and I thought she was crazy. Just brown a few tablespoons in a dry pan until it is the color of a brown paper bag. I have no idea why it works, but it does! Its great for diaper rash, chaffing under arms, legs etc. You can store it in a ziploc baggie for use when you need it. It seems to take the redness and sting away within a couple of hours.
Beeswax is as good as Vaseline. Glad you have a wife as understanding as mine. When I get something in my eyes first thing I do is nothing. I figure that tears are our bodies way to clear eyes. I agree that we build up immunities. I think anti-biotics should be used on a limited basis. Thank you for teaching us! I hope people give up on the "bucket" fixation!

Great Vids Dave. Since your answering questions I have one I have been wanting to ask. It is along the lines of common man bush tools. Since I have been watching you and Silver Fox I noticed I had only Stainless Steel knifes. And the ability to strike a spark with flint/chert has been my latest shift in my kit. But the custom made High Carbon Knifes are a bit pricey for my common man life style. What do you think about modifying a Ontario Knife 6" Butcher. Mine strikes sparks very well. USA made
awesome video dave and i know this is your pathfinder channel but i gotta ask is there anymore episodes of dual survival in the works or is the series over? i kinnda got the feeling that u and cody started having more conflicts in personality towards the later episodes
Hey Dave, i hear you sniff and sound congested often. try a salt & baking soda solution in a neti pot to rinse your nasal passages. look it up. works for me.
Hey I have a good documentary for you to watch to show another alternative to disinfect water/nutrition. It is called "How Beer Saved the World". It is on netflix right now. I knew beer was old from middle ages and egyptian pharoes, but apparently it is ancient and a super source of nutrition/safe water. I thought you would appreciate it becuase it has to do with being self reliant and also multi purpose, and you allready carry grain in your kit I think? I do so I am sure I learned from you lol!
One question I have had and the placement is probably going to seem goofy is about your metal container. What sort of material is it made of and where can I pick one up? I keep seeing aluminum container at stores and online, but doubt that could withstand a fire to boil water in. Suggestions and site to pick one up would be much appreciated. Love the videos and always look forward to seeing what you are doing next.
What brand and type of space blankets r u using as insulation, also would u show some of the medicinal plants that u would keep dried inside ur shelter in a semi or permanent situation.
Dave, speaking of smoke, I believe I saw a pack of cigarettes in one of your yurt videos. Believe me, I'm not judging as I still smoke as well. I am curious about smoking while hunting large game such as our Ohio deer. I assume that you do hunt deer. Do you feel that cigarette smoke spooks deer? It's very hard to leave them in the truck, and I doubt that I'm alone in this concern. Thank you!
@lawfin60 my grandpa used to say that the deer would come to the smell of tobacco. he was never bashfull in its use, and hes shot more deer than most people see in their life. not sure if its true or not, b/c i dont smoke or chew, but he was a damn smart man, so id trust him.
Yeah! on the foot wear.I know one hippy that must have a lot of foot problems.I didn't understand why he went bare foot in a jungle are desert. If this hippy was to be in a hurry to get out of danger he would be in a real fix
I like these videos that answers peoples questions. But, I know its got to be hard answering the same questions over and over again though. Keep up the good work!
Hay Dave.I have an idea on the bucket.I agree a bucket is a good item to carry.but the bucket can be a pain to transport. So I'm think you are some one else might come up with collapsible bucket that can be put into a pack..I wouldn't know how a collapsible bucket would be made but it would be a easier to transport
@mogges1 on your collapsable bucket comment, I was at an army surplus today and saw a white canvas collapsable bucket for 10 bucks. around the 2 gal size. also, a great place for producs is on horse packing websites. they usually carry collapsable buckets for grain and water for the horses.
I live in Scotland and have never considered boiling water when ive been out, drank from water in the lowlands and the highlands and ive never been sick.
The neem plant and neem oil kills fungus and has been used for thousands of years....check it out and give me some feedback....I have used it for athletes foot and for bug repellant.
Cheers Dave...thanks for the videos and keep up the great work.
Fortunately were I'm headed, they have an endless supply of large green leaves. It is a tactical retreat. Here at home, it is a choice between pine needles or pine cones. I believe living in Yurts or the equivalent will become popular and this explains in part why this Yurt thing is so cool. I'll consider doing a Bamboo Hut thing, time permitting of course. I'll have a garden to go with that hut to supplement the banana and occasional bug diet. Watering that garden will be key.
Hey Dave. I had a couple questions. 1. If you mixed some baking powder with some wood ash would that strengthen the wash solution or counter one with the other? 2. Do you have any tips for making cheap flint and steel strikers. I found some places that sold 17th 18th century style fire kits but they seemed a little expensive. Thanks for the great vids. I really dig the 21st century longhunter series. This information is slowly being lost and it's great your bringing it back. Take Care Bro
Hey Dave, what would be the best way to stitch a wound in a wilderness/survival situation? And I no cattail is a good method for bleeding, what are other plants that would help clot blood flow? Thanks for your time.
As far as defecating around the Yurt, should you be concerned about rainwater and drainage contaminating the creek or other water sources? How far away should your 'toilet' be from your water source for it to be safe? thanks for all the info.
@tdurden025 I was thinking about this, and it would be the same as planning out an outhouse on a property - smart planners will think long and hard about creeks and spring/well sources, then designate some area far away from those to be the area of throne-use. For a stay longer than Dave's a permanent single deep hole would be created and marked-off (you don't want someone falling into it at night) for all to use.
Im totally with you on the multi purpose tool idea. I try to do the same. And I try to give out a few suggestions on that same topic on my channel. For instance to me a machete is an axe saw and large knife. A cartridge can also be fire starter with wet tinder. Good channel Dave.
i was looking at the prices for a yurt or for a cabin tent and they are all in the over a thousand dollar range. so i found a more common man solution, new way concrete supply sells very heavy duty construction tarps (not painters tarps) so im just going to make my own. just thought is share that for anyone that might be looking for a less expensive path
I would imagine it would actually be good for you to consume Iron in the water. Think about this for a minute, we eat "Iron Fortified" Cereal everyday in America. All it is, is small iron filings mixed in within the cold cereal that we eat. What difference does it make then if you drinking it with milk and rice crispies, or if your drinking it in spring water?
Maybe I'm wrong and missing something, but I don't see a difference.
...Native americans didn't have charmin or even typically much disposable cloth/skins and they were in many ways cleaner than their european counterparts and many people today. You can manage. ;-)
Good stuff man. And actually obviously it's not something people love to talk about (haha) but good of you to tackle the toilet paper problem.
Honestly, unless you're sick, if you have a decent diet and particularly if you are out in the woods and literally squatting when doing your business (which works better all the way around even when it comes to getting your insides lined up right...check it out people)...there shouldn't be that much to wipe off. There, I said it......
Just want to know how many nights have you actually spent in the yurt. srry not trying to be insensitive, or off the pages. but you are only 600 yards from your house. Do you actually stay in the yurt or are we being blinded by Man Vs Wild on you tube. The idea of nomad is isolation and being isolated from public contact. Is this just to pacify the crowd? This content is in all your starter vids. Sincerely your true fan Rebel.
For the guy who asked about eye medicines in the field. Chickweed. The sap is an excellent eye solution. Just rub it in your hand and press the juice out and drip into the eye by the nose and blink. Chickweed grows and is green throughout the winter. Grows by trees in damp soil near water. Or in any shady place.
Dave have u ever considered wiping with rocks? One time in the rocky mountains i was above treeline and there really weren't any leaves around so i wiped with a smooth rock and it worked great.
One of my favorite things I take with me in the bush for hygiene is pine tar soap. It should have at least 25% pine tar to be medicinal to help with skin problems and be a very effective antiseptic soap. I use it for shampoo head to toe. I love the smell of campfire smoke and don't need to worry about any foo foo flowery smell while in the bush. This makes it useful to wash all of my clothes and woolens too for the same reason you smoke your woolens after washing. It dries hard to no mushy mess.
I'm interested in what solutions you can think of for a sustained survival situation in which making your own shoes or boots becomes necessary. I live around the tip of the rockies so living in the desert and severe winters are a reality.
Nice vids. I wanted to share some of my knowledge and things I use after watching your Q & A. The best and safest way to remove a foreign object from the eye is a bit of petroleum jelly on the end of a Q-tip. This is what I learned from working in the ER. It does two things, grabs the particle and makes it stick and lubricates the eye or scratched cornea with any left over PJ on the eyeball. This is what MD's do in the ER a lot. I don't see why soft tallow or beeswax wouldn't work if sterile.
Dave quick question: what model of cot is that? I just noticed the springs on it. Care to go over your whole sleeping setup? Keep it up Dave, great stuff.
I'm glad to hear Miss Iris is going to be in some videos. Would like to see what you would do with th ladies in the wilderness. the camping with kids video was great. more info for the ladies would be nice... Keep up the good work Dave..
I want to see you process more animals and taxidermy hides or tan them. go into more of that. No one seems to teach that or go into specific detail. Thank you keep it up and keep teaching us.
Dave, I have enjoyed all the Yert videos and look forward to the next one. This has been a great series so far. Thanks man. When you answered the question about when you took a dump, reminded me of what I did when I was a boy running/roaming the hills of Ky. I would cut the sleeve off of my t-shirt and use that. lol
Dave thanks for telling it like it is .my wife and i had a bucket lifestyle while building our first home .we had to walk in and make due or due with out but ,we were young and in love .the everglade stuff was great too .have fun out there
hi dave you look like a guy whos in good shape would you talk a little about what you eat dont know if this is a stupid questin or not just interested thanks
Vaseline is a petroleum product and being so if you don't constantly put it on whatever you are applying it to, it will dry out big time and dry rot; tallow is a natural substance so it doesn't pose the same problem as petroleum based jelly, I used to be a big believer in putting Armorall on my dash board and tires but if dont do it on a regular basis it will dry rot your dash and it will crack all to hell and it can also do the same to your tires,I try to stay away from any petroleum based oils
How do you keep water or snow out of the inside of the yurt if the hole in the top is always open. If you can't stop it then how would you prevent everything from getting wet?
Dave you're the man! keep it up. I dig the Q & A and i think you've totally convinced me to get my own Yurt - it would be awesome to try it out here in Ontario in the freezing winter.
@dclement7 Nope. Make sure it is completely cooked all the way through, and don't eat any of the organ meat. Boiling it is the safest way, but you can also freeze it for a while, like bear meat.
Okay, with all the talk of hygene Im wondering What you would do to deficate. Of course you use a bathroom thats 600yds away but what if you were out away from all that. Is it that bad to bury it, or burn it, or does it have to be packed out?
Hey Dave, have you thought about writing another book by chance (another waterproof one if so) and what's the word on Dual Survival 3? Read your last book and it was an understandable read and one of my favorites. Keep it up!
I love these videos Dave. I'm curious about what it would take to relocate your yurt if you had to. If you did it on foot how many trips or how many people would it take?
Great info. on the "smoke baths". I'd not heard of that technique for cover scent or killing bacteria.
At this time how would you compare your yurt living to say one of those heavy canvas outfitter square tents which accomodate wood stoves? Advantages over disadvantages? Did you show the flap accomodating your stove pipe and how you manage rain from coming through or did I miss that?
Again thanks, I'm officially addicted to your videos and looking forward to your school offering a ladies class.
i know this is a bit off the path, but have you thought about using punk wood as tinder over char cloth. thanks for your videos and all the time you give us. jake
Any issues with rodents/scavengers yet? I'd imagine thse hides on your floor and the tallow on your gear would bring them in from far and wide to get a bit of warmth/food/bedding. In my area if you leave an axe out the porcupines'll eat the handle just for the salt of your sweat
What about honey as a multi-use sundry? Comfort food, calories, disinfect/seal wounds, cough medicine, etc. And it lasts literally forever - We've pulled pots of thousands of years old honey from Egyptian tombs, heated it to de-crystalize and it's good as new.
i grew up in a woodsman /live-off-the-land environment and with a accident and a addiction,i forgot about that way of life ,now years later and with a family and kids of my own dual survival ,and your videos have inspired me to get out in the woods with the kids and show them they dont need fancy/electronics toys to have fun. thanks

Thank you!
lawfin60 2 months ago
@lawfin60 my grandpa used to say that the deer would come to the smell of tobacco. he was never bashfull in its use, and hes shot more deer than most people see in their life. not sure if its true or not, b/c i dont smoke or chew, but he was a damn smart man, so id trust him.

Hay Dave.I have an idea on the bucket.I agree a bucket is a good item to carry.but the bucket can be a pain to transport. So I'm think you are some one else might come up with collapsible bucket that can be put into a pack..I wouldn't know how a collapsible bucket would be made but it would be a easier to transport
mogges1 2 months ago
@mogges1 on your collapsable bucket comment, I was at an army surplus today and saw a white canvas collapsable bucket for 10 bucks. around the 2 gal size. also, a great place for producs is on horse packing websites. they usually carry collapsable buckets for grain and water for the horses.

As far as defecating around the Yurt, should you be concerned about rainwater and drainage contaminating the creek or other water sources? How far away should your 'toilet' be from your water source for it to be safe? thanks for all the info.
tdurden025 2 months ago
@tdurden025 I was thinking about this, and it would be the same as planning out an outhouse on a property - smart planners will think long and hard about creeks and spring/well sources, then designate some area far away from those to be the area of throne-use. For a stay longer than Dave's a permanent single deep hole would be created and marked-off (you don't want someone falling into it at night) for all to use.

Regarding Iron in the water...

Honestly, unless you're sick, if you have a decent diet and particularly if you are out in the woods and literally squatting when doing your business (which works better all the way around even when it comes to getting your insides lined up right...check it out people)...there shouldn't be that much to wipe off. Dear Dave,
Just want to know how many nights have you actually spent in the yurt. srry not trying to be insensitive, or off the pages. but you are only 600 yards from your house.
