"You're a governess. Your student, its a boy of eight. And he's tall for his age. He flicked you with ink today. There are two drops on your ear in fact. India blue is nearly impossible to wash off. Anyway, very impetuous act of that boy, but you're too experienced to react rashly, which is why the lady for whom you work lent you that necklace.Pearls, diamonds, flawless rubies. Hardly the gems of a governess .However, the jewels you are not wearing, tell us rather more. You were engaged."
You have to admit, Holmes really deserved that wine in the face. The whole "left her poor fiance for a better off doctor" was entirely uncalled for, as there is no possible way he could have known why she was no longer engaged. Holmes broke one of his own maxims: Never assume.
@austen4272 She was insulted by the way he assumed that she left her previous fiance because he wasn't rich enough. He had no way of knowing why they were no longer together.
@oOFuSiiOnzX He is bored with the trivial nature of ordinary people, his only interrest is his work and his cases. That is why he spends most of his time locked away in his appartment, when he is not working that is...
Personally I think Mary Morstan was smarter than a woman who would have thrown her wine at him. She would have understood why he came to his conclusion. But I guess it's more entertaining and makes her acceptance of his help later in the movie more poignant... Mary in "A Study in Scarlet" was intelligent and composed, as was this one in every other way. She's a cool character and I hope she's in the next movie :)
This totally reminds of the Episode of House after Kutner killed himself, and Foreman, Thirteen, House, and Kutner's parents are talking about him, and House discusses Kutner and doesn't stop until Kutner's parents and Thirteen/Foreman tell him to shut up and leave. Just the rambling part and not stopping though ^^. Love Sherlock Holmes :D.

@falconwind00 From the color, I would assume a steak, probably sirloin, but the size is huge, so it might be other kind of steak. Nevertheless, it is a type of beef.
@117ty Well he has an aversion to women that borders on paranoia and a close fealty to watson so many people can assume he has a homosexual identity, but the books describe him as being completely asexual. He is a walking mind in the books, however he seems to have much more emotion and humanity in the films. I would look at Holmes as being someone who loves in a very childlike way, without sexual passion and completely selfishly possessive ( to a point)
@117ty Sherlock Holmes is never even hinted at at being gay. In 19th Century England men used to literally walk arm-in-arm in public and no one would bat an eyelash at it. Reading those books and looking at this relationship with 21st Century eyes, one could possibly think that Holmes must be gay, since he's portrayed as a misogynist and is so close to Watson. But Watson is married in the books and Holmes is rather a narcissist & Jeremy Brett believed came from a cold and loveless childhood.
@JBosiris I'm guessing you mean Watson, not this one, but John from the BBC show Sherlock? I love Martin Freeman - I'm going to start reading LotR so that I can see him as Bilbo! Sad but true...-.-
The mistake Holmes makes at the very end is actually very similar to his mistake in "The Yellow Face". His cynical attitude towards women leads him to a rather erroneous conclusion both times. In "The Yellow Face", he assumes blackmail on a lady's part, when it's really a more innocent answer to the mystery. Her, he assumes Mary dumped her previous boyfriend...when the truth is he died.
@RushLimborg well in the book - he's a bit of a prat towards women, and in this movie - he loves irene adlers character. which doesn't fit his profile really at all. but it would explain his mistake.
@elenore88 ps. and I mean doesn't fit his character in terms of how good he is. to be that smart you have to be wise. and to be that wise - you just wouldn't be that much of a sucker.
