Call me crazy, but this is around the time "Gypsy" was made in2 a film, and I think Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli would have made the perfect Mama Rose and Louise respectively... Wouldn' that have been something! Two legends, one on her way out, the other just beginning, sharing the screen. I think they would have made the movie a masterpiece!

I think hate is too strong a word. Judy was jealous-and who could blame her when everyone said she was over and Liza was just beginning. But they loved each other through the competitivness. And from what I read about this concert, Randy is right...Liza had a habit of not keping the mic in front of her...I don't think we need to read anything more into it.

I didn't mean jealous in a negative way...only that she was used to having all the attention on stage. I think you're right, Judy was a proud mother and was happy to be singing with her daughter...I fell in love with her with I was just a llittle kid and she is the ultimate Superstar!

Judy remarked that Liza had a bad habit of not keeping the mic directly in front of her mouth when she sang. That Liza would wave the mic around so much. Of course, Judy didn't really need to worry about it since her voice was so big.

Liza and her mum were fiercely competitive. They hated and loved other. Liza commented as such in a later interview and stated that she felt her mum was jealous of her.

She didn't try to take the mic away. Liza was clearly inexperienced at live performing and her voice was stronger than her mother's. Judy was trying to teach her about balancing vocal parts. What she tried to do was move the mic further from her mouth, but Liza was too green to follow, that's all. That's ultimate respect for your fellow less experienced performer, whatever the relationship. Hats off to Judy for the professionalism and the love for her daughter.

No, I could have only dreamed to have seen that! What strikes me about this clip, and others, is what good control Judy has over the orchestra. She and Mort Lindsey work well together, he knows exactly when to start and stop.
