  • so is london

  • To all those who talk about older subway systems or more modern subway systems, you miss the point. NYC is the only city in the U.S. where people can get around at all hours without a car. I'm not sure that the statistic they site of 75% of New Yorker not having cars is true, that might only be in Manhattan. Still, a whole heckeva lot of people don't own cars here, and don't feel they are missing anything. It's amazing how many adults here don't even know how to drive. That's says a lot about h

  • MEGA SHITTIES!!!!!

  • london underground is old, and by the looks of things, more hygienic and more appealing... i happily take the underground in london, whereas i would relentlessly take the new york subway...

  • @EJES2000 Since seats on the London Underground are upholstered, they're a lot less hygienic. A number of stations in the underground are more aesthetically appealing, but many others, like Queensway, aren't anything special. Also, I'm quite sure that relentlessly doesn't mean what you think it does, perhaps you meant reluctantly.

  • @LeeGeorge08 Are you serious? Are you freaking serious? Don't fucking come to a video you know you disagree with just to make your corrupt candy ass feel better. Don't even fucking reply to my comment because I don't want to hear if from your bitch fucking mouth ok? Unlike London, New york has so many good memories so many historical movie events known throughout the world so many classic characteristics so many good qualities back then as well.

  • MTA trains are antiquated compared to trains in Japan, France and UK

  • @KeitoIdo you should go to Hong Kong and their subways, you're going to get blown away. The fact that they have employees everywhere you need them amazes me while the MTA is still laying people off.

  • the london underground is older :3

  • @Rocktecho .......

  • Who gives a shit?

  • Not only it's a great way to get around, but the NYC subway is home to many of NYC's finest residents.

  • new york is too crowded and dirty. chicago is where its at

  • i live in LA and we need a sub way system like that were having to pay 4 Dollars a gallon on gas and breathing in the worst air in earth and in la only the poor public transportation

  • Forever Redbirds 1959-2003

  • New York should be the capital of USA not Washington DC

  • freakin capital of the world

  • i love new york:)))

  • my house is also over 100 years old it was the first Woodside mail station something like that. I don't know if it's bad or good.

  • unless my ears deceive me the narrator is Alan Johnson from peep show! ..oh the whole tone of the video changes now lol

  • i live NY.C. I LIKE

  • N.Y.C the capital of the world

  • Nice!!! very informative I have always enjoyed Natgeo's work. I have a few video myslef on my channel.

  • NY ftw

  • "Motorman" LOL.

London Underground drivers are called Train Operators.

  • where is denzel washington?

  • New York Subway is the best. I love NYC and love the MTA to get around town. Much better than the Metro in Montreal. If you don't love New York, leave!

  • I live in NYC, the MTA sucks. The amount of money they hunger for doesnt show in the services they provide. The Buses arent on time, and the Trains are either over-crowded or have no A/C or is out of service, Not to mention they have too many delays. I would rather drive in my car be stuck in traffic that to be stuck in those trains crowded by dumbass passengers. MTA always wants to raise the fair, yet they have enough money to build another bridge for the city.

  • @kapri11212 In your opinion perhaps, but in mine The best!

  • Fun fact: Boston's subway system is 7 years older than New York's. It opened in 1897.

  • @jdgator95 yeah but Boston is small as fuck.

  • @Indestructible229 your point is

  • howardkevinm Part 6 - What’s funny to me (LOL) is that you stated “90% of the city drives”. This is totally wrong. NYC moves on rails and buses and would be crippled by the “90%” driving commuters, as proved by two blackouts that stopped rail transit on its tracks.

If you need more information on facts of operation, I’ll be glad to give you the benefit of my 32 years with NYC Transit.

  • howardkevinm Part 5 - As a Motorman, very rarely would I encounter a delay “following trains” as a source of lateness. You must look at passengers holding doors or train equipment failures. The signal system worked just fine. As soon as the doors were closed and locked, it was balls-to-the-wall with the controller (“wrapping it around”). I doubt if you ever operated a train in service or know much about the NYC system.

  • howardkevinm Part -4I operated as a Conductor and Motorman for 10 years, Motorman Instructor for 17 years and a Schedule Manager for 4 years, retiring in 2003. During the period as an operating employee and supervisor, most of our delays were passenger, and car equipment related. We had occasional signal problems but they were in the minority. As far as stopping every 100 feet shows that you never operated on the system.

  • @howardkevinm Part 3 - You talk about the deployment by SEPTA of ATC. The elevated line that uses it is 14 miles long. That system is above ground, and I’m quite sure, was cheaper to install than a comparable subway ATC and I’m also sure that it was 90% bought and paid for the federal government. NYC has 656 miles of revenue track with the majority of it being subway construction. It operates 24/7 with hours of work restricted to late pm and early am, which makes it hard to reinvent with ATC.

  • I''m from london and I must say... NEW YORK IS THE BEST AND LONDON IS A SHITHOLE

  • they still use block signals?? seriously? thats like 1940s technology. i live in philly. the EL is 14.9mi long and we have a total of 8 signals. just eight. NYC probably has about 10 per mile.

  • @howardkevinm Your system does not run the close headways that NYC Transit has, consequently it could not handle the passenger traffic of NYC. There simply is no comparison to NYC's system. There are probably more riders in Queens (one county) than all of Philly.

  • @florret2003 Queens is a borough actually not county. and SEPTA is always strapped cash yet they still employ the safer standards that come with ATC. i bet your passengers get tired of having to slow down every 100ft for a signal yet ours can go 60mph for 20 blocks and not encounter one signal. whats really funny is NY transit is the largest yet 90% of the city drives lol. kind of wasteful.

  • @howardkevinm Part 1- Some “facts” that you state are wrong. Let’s take this one by one. I gleaned this from Askabout.com: Geography…”New York City is made up of five boroughs which are coextensive with five counties. The Bronx (which is Bronx County), Brooklyn (Kings County), Manhattan (New York County), Queens (Queens County), and Staten Island (Richmond County). I don’t know what your intent was in pointing out that Queens is a borough. In NYC they are one and the same.

  • @howardkevinm Part 2 - Safety standards are set by the Federal Government and NYC Transit meets or exceeds those standards, otherwise it would be shut down. ATC is safe and allows greater throughput. That being said, with the current signaling, some rush hour schedules on the IRT system have an extremely close headway in order to move over 1.5 billion rides in 2009. That number represents annual ridership totaling more than all other mass transit systems combined, Philadelphia included.

  • We loved NYC. Visited for the first time ever back at the end of June. The Subways were amazing. We never got lost or had any problems.

  • 2 aNd 5 ...WHOO whoo :D

  • It says the best system in the world but it has to change. Now, it is the worst subway. Dirty, smelly, broken and noisy. Fee is high and now, it has to change all the trains and stations like underground in London. I love London Undergroud!

  • @jdgator95 talking about haters, just look how he said that! If he's no hater then NY is an arabic city or something! XD

  • @NYCSubwayFreak wow that's no clever way to say it... Why say fuck you if people have another opinion than yours? Also please spell "you're" correctly.

  • @Renard380 I know that it doesn't sound right. At the time I just felt like writing that, but it's not like I really mean it. I love NYC and I love all the cities around the world. I know everyone has different opinions and I respect them.

  • @NYCSubwayFreak ok then, good to see i was mistaken when i thought you were just some random retard :D by the way i love NY too and i really hope i'll visit it one day!
