Not only did they have at least 5000 allies with them at the time, they had an unknown number of helots who stood by to assist the spartans. Furthermore, the persian archers were not that great; In fact, their arrow's were so bad, they did not pierce the shields of the spartans at all. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The spartans and other dudes where about 7000 soldiers. If 7000 soldiers defend a 15 meter passage, of course they can hold out for days. Forexample in ancient china an general (I forgot his name xD) managed to hold out for 5 days with his 3000 soldiers against 100 000 soldier of the enemy.

Another army managed to DEFEAT 100 000 with 2000
