  • I'd be pretty choked if I was as famous as him, made my own signature guitar, then when it arrived it wasn't wired right

  • I love how he's looking up from the guitar like he's been daydreaming :)

  • anyone know what gauge strings John uses?

  • @GOreelz ernie ball power slinkys

  • if you want to be a good guitar player are even a great one we MUST all ( i believe) get so so in to the guitar just like j mayor, who is so clearly possessed with this guitar.

  • the guitar said "wow, he makes me sound good."

  • love his thoughtfulness towards guitar

  • "sorry guitars player of america who can play it better"

    10/10 trolling

  • I just love that he's just another guitar player. That's amazing. So humble.

  • God, I just love him...

  • "You know??"

  • i just can feel it ;)

  • think I might go listen to Continuum.... again.

  • I would sell my Soul

    for this Guitar!

  • you would think before sending the guitar to the artist - they would play it ? test drive it. I love my 74 strat - had it since new all pickups changed - crappy original build. my 78 Tokai Les Paul Reborn - now I understand quality. Buy Japanese. fellow in guitar shop hand built a tele - Fralins etc - best Tele I have ever played (~40 years of playing). save $ and avoid the two big names. buy Fender when its on an amplifier

  • @backauf I see where you're coming from...a Custom Shop instrument costs way too much to arrive not functioning properly. I guess there are flukes too tho

  • john mayer could read from the dictionary and make it sound deep. i love this man

  • I used to think he was really pretentious. He actually seems like a really cool guy and a really talented musician.

  • I want that guitar!

  • Way to go Fender....send JM a guitar like that and forget to hook up a ground....kinda sad

I'll build from a Carvin kit first

Tuff guitar in the end tho I will admit

  • Not shocked at all that Fender sent John Mayer his "signature" guitar and forgot to wire it. I've got some great custom shop strats and teles but I worked at a music store for a few years and I played some guitars that should've been scrapped instead of being sent out. Also almost every guitar they sent needed a full setup upon arrival. Same with Gibson. Barely a custom shop guitar from Gibson came in even playable.

  • he's so yummy :)

  • Pretty telling that you can be John Mayer, design a Fender Custom Shop guitar, they build it for you, and yet they still screw up the wiring. Heheheh.

  • i get so jealous watching him play sometimes,so i shut my laptop and storm over my guitar to see if i can do any better....damn you john. i'll be there someday!

  • I wish i was good as him. :((

  • I've got an '82 Ibanez Roadstar II, just something my dad gave to me, and it resonates enough on it's own.

  • @bluesinduluth You only wish lol

  • Find out he name of the guy who did the wiring and scratch his name off the guitar

  • Does he use 0.11 strings?

  • @MJGirl94 @6whatusay9 i'm guessing .10's or .09s

  • @MJGirl94 ernie ball slinky .10's....he's and ernie ball endorser

  • @ilivestrong25 thanks.

  • Go ahead and buy a Fender Custom Shop kids. spend yourself over 2,000 bucks for new wood. I have a Tokai (mid 80's Strat knock), and my Tokai neck pickup and the "fourth" pick up option has more tone and feel than this thing. And puhleeze..don't put a guitar in the freezer, or in a cold garage.

  • @bluesinduluth yeah right..

  • i think 2.0

  • does anyone know the string gage he uses on the blackone?

  • John Mayer forgot the solo! Awesome!

  • sounds like out of my mind around 7:45

  • das jus plain sick 9:27

  • worst fucking camera angle

  • John has 4 other guitars and just bought a new one and was also jealous with the black one.

  • howd he get the guitar to look like that?

  • i bet his calluses on his fingers are almost as hard as my boner from listening to him play

  • @dmv1010 lol wtf

  • How can anyone doubt his talent after watching this video??

  • So much for Fender and paying attention to details !

  • Black 1 made 5 accounts to dislike this as revenge for John tossing it in the freezer.

  • really awsome to see this!

  • How he get's the paint off???

  • What amp is he playing?

  • @RUOCCOLOCO If he's using his regular amps, a Two Rock John Mayer Signature Reverb.

  • @RUOCCOLOCO His dumble amp. It's rare and over 8000$

  • Comment removed

  • Clapton vibrato is the best....

  • 2:10 nice pick switch!

  • Is this a Rust on the plug jack?

  • I think John Mayer is a really fantastic talent and amazing player! However, he is so far up his own ass because of it , I'm surprised he can even breathe! Just tone it down a bit man...But keep making an playing great music!

  • at the end he looks up like a little kid who just got out of a candy store with the biggest lolipop.

Music is like a drug. If you don't believe me, listen to music when you're upset and see how you feel after. :)

Mayer can tune into a channel of music that few people can tune into.

  • I love when he lets the guitar speak for him.

  • I think only guitar players can appreciate how awesome something like this is.

  • Listen to some Hendrix songs and check how much John copies his style.

John is right..He is not a great, GREAT, guitarist, but it's nice that someone delivers the blues to another generation.

    Grtz.

  • That's pretty shocking that the fender custom shop fucked up the wiring on a guitar. Maybe he should have stuck around for more steps to make sure they got it right. I can see it now *custom shop tech "la, la, la wiring's done' *john mayer 'why isn't that wire connected' 'oh shit!'

  • @Levibetz im sure it was more like something happened to it during shipping. Maybe enough solder wasnt applied and it popped up. it happens.

  • Excellent guitar player but...you know? John Mayer had NEVER had the BLUES. He has technique...no doubt....what he needs is for the woman of his dreams to leave him, develop a really expensive drug problem, lose it all...or come close....when that happens, this guy will be one of the TRULY best. He hasn't lived or lost, you can tell by him talking and it shows in his playing.

  • @mortalengines65 Blues is not actually being sad anymore. It is now a style, has been for while. I would argue that you can play 'happy blues' about how fucking good your life is. And that's what john does. And he does a great job.

  • It's amazing that what John calls messing around is what the rest of us say "How is that not a song yet?" to

  • Youtube refrence

  • @blok31092 put it in your frezer ha

  • Fender Custom Shop soldering... epic fail...

  • johns other 4 guitars disliked this.

  • @MrJossieZamora if his other guitars disliked it he would have like 300 dislikes!!

  • @MrJossieZamora Then he most have bought a new one now :D

  • He just explained all the reasons why I love when he plays this guitar. I thought I was crazy, but I really can hear a difference between this guitar and his others. Phew.

  • This and the first part are... just marketing for the Fender Customshop, sorry.

  • @KitchenMarshall well they did a good job marketing

  • guys hes using a bassman which is an incredible difference in tone to a 'regular' fender amp or his two rocks

  • @FreaquedeMusique I just see a dumble sss and an alessandro cabinet.

watch "Rig Rundown - John Mayer" here on youtube and stare at the very amp you see in this video.

  • @MiniDaab oh yeah nvm xD i thought the dark brown alessandro cabinet was a bassman xD

  • fuckin awesome watchin him play gravity and remembering exactly how he played it on the album. These pickups are remarkable, I have a nice strat but I can't get a tone this beautiful no matter how I try. guess i need to buy em :p

  • @blok31092 I'd say it's probably the amp more than the pickups. In my experience, strats can change their tone a lot from amp to amp.

  • that ehhh in 8.09 is priceless, hes like yeah i doesnt get better than this.

  • @TommyDai1 nah its cause he made a mistake

  • @DiamondMusicChannel watch again, you'll get there

  • Refreshing to know that someone as good as him can still make mistakes! Still beautiful bit of impromptu jamming though.

  • its like willie nelsons trigger

  • Mofo knows how to play that axe.

  • Such nice tone

  • Just shows how fender quality control is not up to scratch! They didnt even finish wiring up John Mayers Guitar!!! What a joke!

  • @brissyproducer I guess SUHR has it together!!! Suhr takes it up a few notches in quality!

  • @brissyproducer

Just stop. That ground could have come out for any number of reasons. I had an issue with my Gibson Les Paul after 2 weeks with the volume knob randomly cutting out. Sometimes shit just happens.

The black one sounds gorgeous and Eric C., Eric J, Jimi, Stevie, etc. would not have played Fenders if they were a joke. Get off your high horse.

  • @MrNickhinshaw A ground cannot just "come out" for any number of reasons... There are two reasons... 1. it wasn't solder correctly ie a dry solder joint (meaning lack of workmanship) or 2. It wasn't soldered in the first place!....

In regards to your les paul issue with the volume knob.... Once again that could have either been a dry solder joint or a faulty pot... if it is due to a dry solder joint then that is once again poor work if it is a faulty pot not gibsons fault...

  • @brissyproducer You just stated why it COULD have just popped out, not couldn't have. It can very well just pop out because of a weak solder joint or it being banged aorund in transit. Remember, John Cruz also did a lot of relicing to this so maybe it happened when he was working on it.

  • I never really noticed how fantastic his vibrato is until now.

  • 8:25

  • does anybody know something about the plans, fender and mayer had, to release a version of "the black one" for sale? i remember reading something in 2009, but since the day i never heard anything.

  • @bonesmaan @bonesmaan its already for sale, and has been for about a year.

  • @RezaReza22 thank you, totally missed that :/

  • @bonesmaan dude its out

  • @bonesmaan

    yeah man

maybe should try Ebay, few guys still have one for about $16.000,00 and up

  • What a gorgeous tone.

  • 7:52

  • I like how he incorporates blues, the song could be nowhere near "bluesy" but he'll step down and down again and hey.. there it is.

  • hrmmm custom shop guitar without a ground hooked up?

  • @mattsavedbygracengai happens...lol...people aren't perfect

  • Nevermind lol I'm not for sure if mayers is a 12 inch radius, but trust me they are easier to bend. You should go try one out.

  • any body know why at 4:59 it looks so easy and effortless to bend there? I try that and it kills my fingers, cant seem to get the right note and the string slips out of my grip... is my action too high? set up wrong? or my callouses aren't hard enough?

  • @LkJumper33 gauge .10 stringsbtw

  • @LkJumper33 Its prob your neck radius, most strats have a 9.5 inch radius but john specifies a 12 inch radius on his strats. I recently bought a fender deluxe players strat (upgraded from a squire vintage modified strat) and it is so much easier to bend the strings even though i use 11 guage ernie balls because it has a 12" radius instead of 9.5".

  • @LkJumper33 it mostly comes from lots of practice. they come naturally when ur fingers r strong enuf. and maybe ur not using, say, ur third finger to bend and using the fingers before that to help. and as for action...that's personal preference. if u can look at the neck and the strings look pretty low, it's all good. but if they look high, that's cuz they r, and the action is bad. sounds like ur a beginner tho...the callouses come when u play alot and you play hard. so play as much as u can! ;)

  • "I'm not a good guitar player"

    ...

  • Comment removed

  • So is the guitar naturally reliced through John's playing or was it like that when he got it?

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 i'm almost positive that it was like that.

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 See part 1.

  • I wouldn't say "that's it" if I had it in front of me. I would fucking cry. and that's coming from a guy who already owns a John Cruz Strat and thinks it's guitar of his life. but this thing has so much mojo going on... it would almost be like approaching #1.

  • This guy is kind of stupid, but play realy nice!

  • @gonfm77 dude...Mayer has said some real stupid stuff ...like the playboy interview...and I mean that was some stupid stuff but for you to say the guy is stupid only reveals his IQ is so much higher then yours and you just cant figure out what he saying. Whats stupid is you making such a stupid comment. But hey dont feel bad..I really think theres hope for people like you that left school before the 8th grade. ...Love Mike

  • @emacification Hey Mike do not fell bad, I didn't mean to hurt you.... Was just a comment, not big deal! Just that, he's kind of stupid... There is not about IQ or anything else, just something in him that might you don't understand that make him look kind of stupid an unreal man. Hey, but he plays nice, that his job and he make it right, just to me looks like a not real man, I don't know, sorry if the comment upset you, that wasn't the idea, wasn't the intention.... Regard's. All the best!!!

  • @gonfm77 no love...didnt hurt my feelings...your comment just sounded retarded and I wanted to respond. Hope I didnt hurt your feelings. Im sure your a nice guy...you just make stupid comments. But hey..thats what u-tube is for..hehehhehe With warm regards, and deep love and hope for the future of retarded people...Mike

  • @emacification Hey Dude you sound upset.... Are you in love of this guy???....... Again I didn't mean to hurt you.... sorry if i did.....All the best!

  • @gonfm77 With all the love and warm feelings I sent you still think Im upset? Gosh I need to be careful...you a little more retarded then I first thought. Im so sorry. Love? Why didnt you say you had a problem with you feelings getting hurt so bad. WoW Im so sorry love. You know, stupid people can be happy to..please always remember that. OK? There is a place for stupid peope in this world so be happy..safe and dont talk so much..it only makes you look stupid..hehehhehehe

  • There's not much of John Mayer's music I don't like, but I hate the 'my sound comes from the right equipment' kinda thing, and it 'has to be perfect'. I can't help thinking that if you handed Jimmy Hendrix a Squier Strat, or hand Jimmy Page an Epiphone Les Paul, they'd rock the shit out of that. Hand Mr Mayer anything other than £2000+ worth of relic and he'd complain about it instead of just getting on with the job. It puts budding guitarists off. It's not what you play it's how you play it.

  • @systemsmith True, but as a creative person, I can say that I recognize and understand that need to find that sonic signature. An instrument that really speaks to you is really an amazing thing. You come up playing what you can get, and if you're successful at it you get to play what you really want. I know I'd probably at least try a Dumble if I had the opportunity.

  • @jmillzz2 True. I stand by my comment but I guess I'm also just a little bit jealous.

  • @systemsmith

I'm going to have to agree with jmillzz2 here and say as a creative person,

guitar playing is a feeling thing, it's like talking.

if you have stuff in your throat, or a stuffy nose, you can't reach your full potential.

A runner wouldn't show up to the olympics with shitty shoes on. so why would you expect a great guitarist to be satisfied with playing a shitty/low-grade guitar?

Not saying it can't be played well, but it makes a huge difference in higher level playing.

  • 9:25 he pops his head up like he couldnt even believe he just did that

  • "...that's just plain sick..."

    well said, fender dude...well said.

  • I notice John went on a trance and became one with the black one at the end.. nice solo, typical John Mayer!

  • Sick tone ! Thanks for the upload.

  • he did not buy this guitar fender most likely gave it to him to get more publicity to the Fender Custom Shop. Cool video with a sweet story behind the infamous "Black One"

  • めっちゃどや顔

  • he bought some mega expensive custom shop, handmade thing, and on the first try it doesn't sound the way he wants, and the first response is to freeze the guitar??! Not to send it back in?? Or to call the fender people?!

  • The thing went whooooooooooooooooop, and started playing right :D

  • So john spends thousands of dollars on his dream guitar from the fender custom shop, and when he finally gets it, someone hooked the ground wire wrong -__-

what does that say about the "custom" shop...

  • @coolerty thats definatly a custom job haha

  • If he ever get the crazy idea of making an instrumental album, something like this, with drums and all that, I 'd definitely buy that.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • That guitar for him is like say...Blackie for Eric Clapton. Or even Lucille for BB. He can play other guitars and sound great, cus he's amazing, but when he pulls that it's not just an instrument. It's part of him, part of his image, part of his body, part of his soul.

  • @liupot this guitar is a mix between Clapton's Blackie and SRV's ONE... look at them... they t=mixed into John Mayers.

  • That white boy can PLAY. He may have said some dumb racial stuff in an interview but... He can play definitely play blues like he was black in his past life.

  • Not a good guitar player..?..Yeah right...Awesome guitar player for sure.!

  • Inspiring guitar playing.

  • He makes the guitar sound like a voice. Its incredible

  • You can tell by the way John talks, that he doesn't watch TV.

  • 9:03 this moment gives me hope but why I don't know

  • 9:00 my best part ;SS

  • what's the chord at 6:31? thanks.

  • i love hearing him talk. the details are essential

  • first time i ever heard him play a solo which is the same from the album.... normally, it ALWAYS DIFFERENT...

  • wow you can clearly tell he learned how to bend from BB haha

  • whats neat is that yes he is making mistakes , but its Incredible that being a musician no matter how many times you make mistakes in practice, some how we get motivated on stage and we play amazingly . I know from being in college band and various other Rock slash jazz blues bands, that some how performing live just gives you that extra something in your style Ya know?

  • What effects ped is he using?

  • @joshuatreble none. theres a tuner in the back

  • Wish I could play THAT sloppy...haha

  • nice too see him struggle....makes him so human^^

  • john please just come to terms with the fact that you're the best guitar player/songwriter you've ever heard...

  • He looks so proud at the end

  • I want to listen to Over and Over

  • Haha, 9:22-9:30, you can see the child in his eyes, joyous from guitar playing. True, naked, joy.

  • I want to learn how to jam like that alone...seems pretty easy...just have chops

  • Comment removed

  • This is one of the rooms inside of his house...

  • For him thinking he's not a good player, I sure like his style! ...and his taste in tone!
