I was curious when I saw this youtube description show up on the right because I couldn't imagine how Bernstein's enveloping Far from Heaven theme could be reduced to piano. But played as you have, in salon-room fashion, it comes out with a beautiful and unexpected intimacy and charm.
@sh24jame Thanks for your comment. I can't help with that, because I no longer have the score (I used a library copy for the video). Besides, I would run into copyright problems if I were to distribute it.
Personally, I think the score to this amazing movie was one of Bernstein's finest works. You played this so beautifully. Where did you find the sheet music? I'm hoping to learn it. :)
@ivalice1980 Thank you. I don't have the score (I borrowed it from a library) but it was in one of the Musicsales' 'Essential Film Themes' compilation books - either volume 2 or volume 4 I think.
Thanks for the post ... it is such a beautiful song evoking so many emotions. Love to listen while painting and doing other art work ... gives them more soul, thank you :)
Thank you! Some moments may well have been faster than on the soundtrack, because as I say above, I had not had the opportunity to hear it and was relying on my interpretation of the score.
Thank you for your kind comment. I was never able to hear the original soundtrack and was relying entirely on interpreting the printed score, so I am pleased it accords with your expectations.
This is gorgeous, Philip. I have placed this on my playlists for "Exciting New Releases" as well as "music from film." I love Bernstein's score for "The Great Escape." Certainly a great contrast from, say, "The Man with the Golden Arm." I don't think there was a distinct Elmer Bernstein 'sound' -- but a number of great works such as what you have played so beautifully here. ~Terry
Thank you for that. As I was playing it, I was struck how anachronistic this was for 2002. Mind you, I think it incredible that Bernstein was writing this, and conducting it with the Hollywood Bowl when he was around 80. In the UK most people are forced to retire at 65 - so it really pays to have some exceptional ability that people are willing to pay for as long as you are capable of delivering the goods!
stunning piece of music

1:35 - 1:44 is such a beautiful transition. So unexpected and heartbreaking.

@HenryFranconia Thank you very much for that. Not all movie themes work in the published piano arrangements, but I think this one does.

Beautiful. I love putting your playing on in the background as I get household chores done.

Thank you - that's really nice. My problem is that I ignore the household chores to make the videos!
