  • I used to play like that when i was 11 years old.Sorry to all you Keith Moon fans, there is only one god BONZO!!!!!

  • Check out the who playing a quick one at the rolling stones circus or montrey pop then tell me there is a better rock drummer no one past or present comes close to him for speed and energy

  • DAVE GROWL iz DUH BEST DRUMER moon iz shit NOFINK KNOT EVEN CLose GROWL 4EvA!

  • @MrThreshold2009 I love Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl... but no way, NO ONE is better playing drums than Keith Moon! NO ONE! And I also think Taylor Hawkins is better play drums than Dave *cough*

  • Tears the hell outta them toms. Wish I could drum like this.

  • why are there always arguments on who the best drummer is/was? does it really matter? thats not why you're here. either enjoy the amazing talent that is Keith Moon, or go somewhere else. Like another comment says, "there is no best, only favorites." not everyone is going to agree with you, get over it and move on.

  • 18 people think Joey Jordison is better, and are fans of slipknot

    Slipknot = Shit

  • If he is not the best for his stye he is for his antics

However he is mentioned by most of us drummers as the best #5 years after his death yes ther are many great drummers however a drummers job is to keep pace and Keith took center stage and forced the band to keep up

If we speak so highly of him !

so much and in every article then he must be TRULY THE BE#ST!

  • Moon the Loon.................... RIP

he complemented Sandy Nelson for much of his style. Your still the best loon

  • A musicians job is to entertain and to all you haters Keith Moon did just that!

  • In the big picture Keith Moon was not that great of a drummer. Sorry but it's the truth.

  • @bergerfry Dude he didnt look at what he was playing and was a pure freestle drummer who always kept pace .. He was incerdible .

  • @bergerfry Lol.. Yeah....O.K. Go listen to your Travis Barker and shut the hell up.

  • @Tom6093 Barker is ok but far from being my drummer of choice. Try Gavin Harrison, Buddy Rich, Papa Joe Jones, Benny Greb.

  • @bergerfry Barker Doesn't have the stamina nor the skill to even be in the same catagory as Kieth Moon or Buddy Rich or any of those guys you mentioned. He's only good at making hip hop and rap beats.....Thats all

  • @Tom6093 You never saw the drum duel at the Marquee between Baker and Mitch Michell to settle at the time who was the best and if you do not know who Mitch was he was Jimi Hendrixs drummer

  • @triker1951 Everyone has their own idea's of what separates good seasoned drummer to being one of the best. Mich Michell is a good seasoned pro drummer. Barker has skill but is no where near as well rounded as Michell. Travis Barker knows hip hop and todays modern rock beats, but you put him together with Portnoy, Peart , Even Dave ghrol, Lol....No contest. Travis is a fashion drummer that is great because he does a show with his drumming. But when it comes to actual skill,he falls short.

  • @bergerfry oh you know shit about music

  • No other influencial drummer out there. Like the beatles he started it all.

  • @MegaCokamo this guy sounds like a non bias source of information

  • @DancesWithNarwhals No come on now im not here to debate with anyone but he was there first. Before him everything was classy and in order, even Ringo starr and charlie watts was. He was crazy, reckless, original, and he changed the fucking instrument. Saying that he was there first is not being biased, you cant argue the truth.

  • @MegaCokamo you clearly have a very minimal understanding of history in modern music

  • @DancesWithNarwhals and you're an arrogant asshole.

  • @MegaCokamo Buddy Rich. Gene Krupa.

  • I've scene this being played ( on youtube ) Keith does look totally plastered, one of his drums has gold fish in it for god sake? totally mental. That's what's good about Keith he's just not like all the others, unique in every way.

  • There are a lot of great drummers from the past and in the present and yet to come but anyone who knows the skins and how demanding an instrument it is emotionally as well as physically cannot deny Kieth Moons greatness. Great drummers are rarely good at metering the bands they play in but instead they lead and inspire the bands their in to new levels of which only they themselves can reach as Kieth showed in some of the great WHO albums and gigs such as Tommy, Quadrophenia, Live at Leeds. RIP!

  • Sorry but that was all over the place he must have been sober

  • very average pro drummer .. super hyped since his style was so energetic and played for the Who.

  • @jpmfresno What's the point in writing something like that and then not offering some examples of who you prefer?

  • @MrThreshold2009 I did provide examples earlier in the thread. I like Peart, Bonham, Apaice and the greatest of all Buddy Rich. My point is that skill wise I think Moon was average. I agree that the music was great and he drumming fit great and there were great parts he played but I just don't think he was this "great" drummer that like most who die get immortalized and go down as something more than they ever were. Im not saying hes a bad drummer just overrated..just my opinion.

  • @jpmfresno Eh, the thing that always drew me to Keith Moon more than any other drummer (he's probably not my absolute favourite-, although well up there) is not the complexity, but the way he links notes together. His drum parts seem to sort of flip up and down all over the place, like chain reactions. I'll agree that there are some other drummers who are more complex, but Moon's feel for his fill playing puts him up among the greats for me.

  • @jpmfresno

There is more to drumming than just WHAT you are playing

There is something like HOW you are playing (like you said energetic) and also

    WHEN you play something

I know Keith is technically not the best (and is problably even bad when it comes to technique compared to the modern 'drumgods')

but man, just listen to albums like The Who's Next, Quadrophenia or Tommy. Nobody has ever pulled off drums like that, so he remains one of the best drummers in my opinion

  • When and where this solo took place?

  • Headcase, lunatic, nutter, yes but put someone like that in front of a drum kit and stand back. Terrible loss to the band and Jones could never fill his shoes.

  • My faverite drummers are Buddy Rich and Keith Moon

  • Even when I saw The Who for the 25th anniversary, I was dissappointed because even though they had 2 drummers it didn't even come close to way they sounded when Keith played. Keith was truly the raw emotion and talent that made the who famous.

  • Well ,I guess he is all over his kits at the same time !

  • Makes no style Yokoshi look like little drumrr, however you spell that Japs name . Keith moon has style! He is god !

  • KEITH THE GENIUS! GOD BLESS YOU!

  • This IS the "goldfish" solo...

  • fuckin assholes at who doesnt like this video this dude is the best drummer in all the fuckin world until this day

  • @LEDZEPPELINJAMES well said that man, keith is the man,end of.

  • @LEDZEPPELINJAMES Drunk? On drugs? or both?

  • This sounds like his goldfish solo. He's one of my favorite drummers too.

  • My "Favourite" drummer of all time !!!!!

  • @5jerry1

except when you are talking about Keith Moon and Drumming

  • Keith Moon is amazing...

  • Moon the Loon - always entertaining.

  • there are so many good drummers, but the free minded guys like moon, baker and bozio are.. mindblowing

  • happy 65th birthday keith and best wishes up there

  • keith and kollias,best drummers

  • Keith hated drum solos, never took 'em. My guess he played this way so he'd never be asked to do so again.

  • @cast390 you do realize your comment will inevitably be thumbed down into oblivion right? ok, then.

  • @alcoholya Hahahahahahahahaha xD That made my chest hurt cuz i laughed so much xd You tell him!

  • @cast390 What is wrong with you...

  • Controlled insanity!

  • Not Moon's best playing - Live at Leeds sums his brilliance up pretty well, along with Who Sell Out.

Two of the best drummers who rarely get a mention are Jaki Liebezeit from Can and Reni from the Stone Roses. Their bands only had cult followings so they never got international acclaim. Reni's just remarkable for a start. Liebezeit's got the most distinctive style I've ever heard from a drummer.

  • all of u, please listen to dogs part 2, its on here, then comment, this drum solo is no example of what keith could do. i ve been a pro drummer 4 25+ years, learned all zep in a couple of years, still working on dogs part 2 ! what a workout, simply amazing ! worth the time ! also the ox, from first album, these r the kinds of songs that made all drummers take notice, b4 zep was created, keith was setting the standard, check it out ! thanks !

  • You can hear the buddy rich influence, even gene krupa. I love the way all you tossers compare noise drummers to emotional feeling drummers. Moon was a feeler!!!!

  • people think and say what they want ... the two best drummers are J.Bonham & K.Moon !!

they sculpted history of rock n Roll

    with Buddy Rich

  • keith moon....

como no impresionarse al verlo tocar

  • Ian Paice should get a mention great drummer

  • @MrDannyboyhall yes ian paice is such a great drummer.

  • lol this sucks

  • /watch?v=5BqLOsfuLqw

Keith Moon was resurrected on a Korean TV show.

  • if dave grohl and hawkins are on a list for best drummers, than the talent level has diminished sharply here in the new century. grohl is average at best. nothing at all inspiring. hawkins is ok at best. portnoy is great in songs and odd time bass driven fills along with creativity. carrey is creative and powerful. good thing a few of the old timers are still around......

  • @jimmygt4 exactly...did u see him perform with jimmy page..rock and roll? his fill at the end of the song, then compare it to bonham's live performances, not even close...

  • What an embarrassing performance. Also, if you watch the video, a lot of the sound is coming from a Conga player who is standing off to the side keeping time. This is horrendous, and I wish it had not survived on tape.

  • @gitchigoomi

The only other person I saw in the video was a roadie or personal assistant adjusting one of the drums. Where is the conga player?

  • @5jerry1 There are several versions of the tape out there. Watch the long version, and you will see the conga player behind and to Moon's left.

  • @gitchigoomi

I looked around and found the version you told me about. Yes, there he is, a conga player. I wonder who that is? With this in mind, I see this as a drum/percussion duet, rather than a solo. A lot of people trash this performance, but it wasn't all that bad. Certainly not the worst you'll see, not outstanding in either sense, but entertaining nonetheless. I miss the days when we still had Moon and all the others who are retired or dead. It's sad to see what's out there now.

  • @5jerry1 I loved the guy and think of him as one of the most important musicians of all time. I just wish this was not the legacy he left in terms of drum solos.

  • @gitchigoomi it was a mockery, he hated drum solos, he thought they were dull and boring and pointless

  • Really, any Keith Moon performance on a Who record is a drum solo.

  • I think I remember something about Keith Moon never practicing? So that would mean that this is improvised...

  • There's no such thing as "best", ya bunch of twits.

  • @rambadibow

    There's no "best," only favorites.

  • @5jerry1 Just what I've always said.

  • @5jerry1 that's why they give GOLD medals, Nobel Peace prizes, have World Cup champions, Immortalize people etc. No there are "THE BEST" and Kieth Moon is one of them. RIP!

  • @homergolfer

Gold medals are awarded in competitions. Playing drums (or any instrument, for that matter) isn't a competition. It's musical entertainment. At his peak, Keith Moon was untouchable. Here, he's not. I like this solo, it's entertaining, and Moon was a funny, talented man. Again, there's no "best," only favorites. Gold medals and Nobel Prizes are straw man arguments, by the way.

  • @5jerry1 Buddy Rich was best, then there were favorites.

  • @5jerry1 Great comment.

  • The Best (Opinion Only): Keith Moon John Bonham Neil Peart Dave Grohl Ginger Baker Ringo Starr Alex Van Halen Nick Mason Phil Rudd Meg White Carl Palmer John Densmore Mitch Mitchell Maureen Tucker Matt Cameron
  • @cford1992 Finally, someone who admires Nick Mason, Alex Van Halen and Phil Rudd's playing styles. I kinda disagree with Meg White, and a few I don't know, but I definitely think you're spot on with Moon, Bonham, Peart, Baker, Starr, the previous three that are normally ignored, Carl Palmer, Densmore and Mitchell.

  • @GuyWithNoName67 hell yeah man, they're greats, ESPECIALLY Rudd and Alex Van Halen. And I put Meg because yes, her playing is steady, but in my opinion she's one of the HEAVIEST drummers ever, I do think that her steady beat does provide just the right amount of rhythm, especially because The Stripes are only her and Jack. And Palmer, Densmore and Mitchell are underrated, but I love them all ESPECIALLY Mitch Mitchell, I think him and Moon are the two FASTEST players EVER

  • @cford1992 I'm sorry, but Meg White is not a good drummer at all... In my opinion she sounds like an 8 year old who just learned drums and only knows very basic beats. Sure it's perfect for the Stripes because in all they're not a good band. I'm sorry if you like them, but they're bad

  • @cford1992

    Nick Mason :-)

  • Can't really compare Moon to the others. No his timing was not the best but he wasn't there to provide a rock steady beat, he played the drums like another lead instrument. Entwistle had to keep the beat with the bass.

Moon was new and different, original. Many who came after would not have had their style if it wasn't for Moon before them.

Technically he isn't the best, but for drive and passion no one can touch him, so depends on your definition of 'best'. I vote Moon.

  • @leeroyh08 With you dude - i read a Keith Moon biography recently - he never practiced, used to have to re-learn how to play drums whenever they went back into the studio or on tour after hiatus. He was instinctively gifted, but would be outdone technically by more accomplished, traditional drummers that could work in any band. Still, certainly the most natural drummer ever and a proper rock and roll star to boot. R.I.P. Moonie

  • @MrAshwUK Totally agree, well put. Moon was instinctive and an expressively organic talent. All the other cats he is being compared to worked hard at thier craft and matured while Moon was at his most billiant as a kid! And he never matured. He was like a mad savant that when he got drunk thought he could be the best craziest drummer in the world! The difference between him and the rest of us drunks was that he actually could do it!

    Music is emotion...Moon wins.

  • @leeroyh08

    No "h" in "Entwistle."

Entwistle said various times he missed Moon as a friend, but as a musician he didn't miss him at all.

  • Well no one played Drum fills as good as Keith Moon did.

  • im not sure kieth moon was good at keeping time they all seemed to watch pete ywwnsend live .i am not saying he cant do better i am just saying he was in the right band they needed a drummer who made alot ofniose and sounded like he was filling in the back ground

  • art !!!

  • I love Keith but this is a steaming pile ... all four on the floor and bollocks on the side. Nobody is going to say this is good ... he was likely drunk and way out of practice at the time.

  • dylyn elise

  • Poor execution. Nice concept. Please listen to ALL cuts on Eric Merienthal's CD "Crossroads" with Vinnie Coliauta, Terry Lynn Carrington, Dave Weckl and Alex Acuna. This is Hippie bullshit.

  • Many people when they hear this solo think that it's crap because it's noisy and loud (and i'll admit it doesn't have very much dynamics) but that is because they are not listening. He is doing INCREDIBLE work here (especially on the snare).

  • buddy rich.lenny white, niel pert, keith moon is an alien drum master

  • Love Keith Moon, and the Who.

Nick Mason from Pink Floyd though... oh mama

  • The only people that don't like this are the people that know nothing about drumming. This is amazing.

  • My favorites (opinion only)

    1. Keith Moon

    2. Carl Palmer

    3. John Bonham

    4. Bill Bruford

    5. Phil Collins

  • Jim Gordon

    Carl Palmer

    Ginger Baker

  • Other musicians loved him. Audiences loved him. Bitter, jealous people hate him.

  • fuck me sounds like a drunken monkey having fun on a drum kit!

  • Oh...and check out the drummer for Mahavisnu Orchestra..Billy Cobham..

  • Barriemore Barlowe was so bad,he blew everyone away,I saw the guy do it.too bad he played for Jethro Tull and no one gave a shit.Page used him on his 'outrider' album coz Bonham's son couldn't play the song he is on.I didn't get to see MOON THE LOON,missed him in '75 then he puked himself,DAMM SHAME!!!

  • Keith and Pete work together. Keith was Petes rhythm guitar. Normally its bass and drums working in unison, lead guitar out on its own and rhythm adding the background or filling in the spaces. Listening to Keith he fills those spaces and complements Pete quite nicely. Cant think of anyone else who could/can do it???

  • Definately one of the all time best! Thanxs for this piece.

  • 1990s best drummer with out a doubt was Shanon Larkin. He still has a good foot hold in the drum world today. not Mike Portnoy. I agree with all the others with all the dates.

  • 1990s best drummer with out a doubt was Shanon Larkin. He still has a good foot hold in the drum world today. not Mike Portnoy

  • i just don't get what people saw in this guy, showmanship aside

  • drummers simply should not be compared.

  • the best drummer ever!

  • moon was a great drummer but not a good ` time keeper` his style suited the who because as noel gallagher says `everyones playing lead`

  • Ringo starr is better

  • @zosh99 Ringo is solid and can keep a damn good beat, but he'll never compare to the likes of Moon or Bonham when it comes to actual talent. I don't think I've ever heard Ringo play a drum solo like this before in my life (not counting The End, which was alright at best).

    Brilliant solo from Keith! <3

  • @HeatherRawriee no offence Keith Moon is really good but you didn't hear a drum solo like this because Ringo was so modest he refused to plat a solo

  • @zosh99 That's fair enough, and I'm not saying Ringo isn't a good drummer - he's bloody fantastic! I can't fault pieces like Rain or Strawberry Fields Forever. But Keith took the basics of drumming and turned it into his own thing. He may not be too amazing at solos, but within the band, Keith blows everyone else out of the water with his talent. Let's just say they're both pretty amazing :)

  • hes drumming so fast hes not even moving

  • @H3ADFULLAL3AD Now that's good comedy!

  • @H3ADFULLAL3AD awesome

  • i just noticed: my old class mate who introduced me to rock has Keith's initials!

  • ginger was a great jazz & rock drummer but Ifeel that moonie was the best rock drummer EVER! yeah we all have our opinions but that's mine!

  • Brilliant Musician!! I bet he was totally unconscious of how dam good he was. Like a dazzling light thru a crystal.

  • Keith Moon wass the first Lyrical Drumer in the history of rock'n'roll. allthe others were time keepers though some of them are truly great. But Keith Moon just out of ordinory just like Hendrix with the guitar.

  • u got to throw the Rush drummer up thier with the greatest honestly hes a monster

  • @SourMcSkittles Neil is better, he just wasn't the first.

  • John Bonham said he was the greatest mimic of keith moon the world

  • WTF.

  • Moon had to be bombed out of his skull for this solo, it sucks!

  • @DustOnTheRoad I am not going to say it is for fucks sake - it ain't BUT you can't say he wasn't the best (perhaps a matter of opinion) but it's mine

  • Keith moon plays better with the band.

  • I honestly have no idea what all the fuss is about Moon. Maybe I'm just not on the right drugs or something. This sounds really easy to me. And a bit sloppy on top of it. Not trying to be an asshole or anything.....it's just what I hear.

  • @jz881 keith moon was not a solo guy...listen to any of his playing, not solos, just watch him play live and listen to the creativity of his drumming and how he plays with the vocals and lets the guitarist be the time keeper, no one played like keith and his creativity was awesome, ill agree, this solo is nothing special, hes not a solo guy...but the best rock drummer of all time, by light years

  • @jaqua524 - Cool - I can deal with that.....good comments.

  • @jz881 yeah...youtube search the who roadrunner 1971, the who pinball wizard live 1971, or "keith moon and pete townsend" any of those, u'll see what im talking about

  • Nooo...i cant say...def not better than any Buddy Rich solo. but very impressing

  • Comment removed

  • @NEXTxHANDGRENADES no. Not in my view anyway. Moon's agreat guy, but this doesn't even come close.

  • Comment removed

  • This solo is a bit shit. If you told me it was some spotty teenager I would have no cause to disbelieve you.

  • @Funkmeister0000 exactly right, couldn't agree more :)

  • Buddy Rich could do this with one hand, and that's with the understanding the Moon is absolutely incredible.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • Keith Moon the absolute best drummer to ever live. But this solo is honestly not that hard I mean its kind of hard but not really especially for what Keith is capable of this solo really doesn't show Keith's true talent at the instrument.

  • we can believe in sounds

  • Keith!

  • And then NEiel peart comes and Rapes Everyone

  • @alsmang bullshit....kieths better then him,,,so is john bonham or ginger baker

  • @thrillernight23 I think it's REALLY cool how you know so many good drummers!!!! I had never heard of Portnoy or Peart before your incredible comment on youtube!! My drumming knowledge is forever indebted to you!!!!! <33333

Except not really, because, I mean really? The two most technically excellent, but feel-lacking drummers in the world, to "Blow a kid's mind". No. that is dumb.

Peart and Portnoy are machines that play drums very precisely. Nothing more.

  • It's never fair to compare a modern young guy to a guy from the sixties who invented the thing, was in bad health, doing drugs and booze, and still can amaze today. The same goes for all instruments. Steve Vai could out trick Hendrix, a lot of guys can out trick moon. But they have to use moons tricks. Who do you think they listened to when they were learning?

  • Moon was great...but sloppy. Too many drugs.

  • i like this, there are beats behind beats going on here, somtimes 3 at once, thats the fanatical style of Moonie to me, there IS some very good parts in it for sure, the man sure has fast hands. It's freestyle and it dosen't have to be perfect cos you can't re-do this abstract art.

  • Comment removed

  • he's insane in the best way

  • You guys are such tone deaf retards!!

Moons not even on form here.

  • @GrungeRocker1000 what are you talking about? tap your foot too thea beat he's on it then he gets off then he comes back then off he always does that thats his style you cant say hes not playing right when thats right to him

  • lmao! its funny really,....when people say this is "amazing" it just tells me how little the general public know about rythm, time, and drumming in general,....no offense but theres hardly any proper drummers respect this sloppy childish formless mulsh of noise, its paintfull to listen to....come on guys...open your ears

  • @punkrockdrummer1990 actually this solo sucks, even if he's called keith moon

  • @punkrockdrummer1990 yea he went off beat but he ALWAYS does then he always goes back into the beat its his drumming style and its what makes it hard to do it

  • 1940s - Gene Krupa

    1950s - Buddy Rich

    1960s - Keith Moon

    1970s - John Bonham

    1980s - Neil Peart

    1990s - Mike Portnoy

  • @azmichael34 what about Danny Carey

  • @azmichael34 1960's: Mitch Mitchell

    1970's: Carl Palmer
