  • This is singing

  • i agree :( maybe they just lost the feeling or something like that.. :[

  • Anyone know which one was Marshall Thompson in this video. Thanks in advance

  • Marshall is sitting right next to the lead singer,Eugene Record.

  • i wish black people made music like this still...

  • @maximumbigtime I wish anyone could make music like this now but the world is too angry it has lost the soul that existed back then. It is all about what can I take not what can I give. Maybe if listening to this was made compulsory in schools the soul would return.

  • @raywint1 - Don't fear..our local band in southern cal is doing it's best to keep these great songs alive. Hope other bands across the US will follow.

  • I agree :,(

  • Are they lip synching??? LOL

  • Yeah, all the acts that appeared on ST were asked to lip sync vs. singing live. Can't remember why, but it was standard via the show's request.

  • It was common practice back then for the music to be overdubbed with the studio version before it was broadcast. Watch any television performance from back then and you can tell.

  • that chair swinging must have too a long time to master

  • So smooth..... I'm happy to say that I have been able to introduce my daughter to the music of my era after she had her fill of today's noise. So lucky she says I am. And I say amen.

  • I always enjoyed the Chia-lites

  • lmao they dress funny kinda weird like astronaut suits

  • Great record and it featured as a back drop in an episode of the Sopranos. Don't you love it when that happens?

  • All time classic slow jam. The 70s- the fashion, the music, the fact people didn't seem so uptight. I miss it so much. I really do.

  • c'est quoi!! des papi , pk ils sont assis?????

  • This is the first time that I have ever seen the Chilites sing as a group. As a child I spent many days singing this song. This song played a very important part in my childhood days. For those of you who know what I am talking about, music was all we had in a time of change. For once in my life I can honestly say this video is truly a rare classic. Thank you for the posting.

  • As a singer and song writer Eugene Record never received the recognition that he deserved.

  • The Chi-Lites have it going-on! Beautiful voices!

  • i grew up on the "oldies".. and as a yooung kid. it was just take me back in time and just seat and think about the good times ..no worries, no nothing!! just seating back drink some cold koaide remeber that??and eat a sandwitch.. and kissing on that special boy,or girl.. and slow danceing too!! lmbao...

  • is that Eugene Record the lead singer? may he R.I.P.

  • This hurts so much. R.I.P. Mr. Lester. We have to work even harder to make sure this music never dies. The early 70s music was absolutely the best!

  • isso é musica de verdade! que momento, que inspiração!bons tempos!!!!!

  • squirrelll and eugene u guys have have alot of angels flyin around u when u do this tune ican see them vividly

  • beautiful song.....the Chi-Lites fabulous

  • Sad news. Robert "Squirrel" Lester, recently passed away at the age of 67. No further details are available at this time.

  • Black Beauty!!!!!!!!!

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL. ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!

  • CHECK DA WHITE SHOES,,,,,,,,

  • And then there was one :( RIP Robert "Squirrel" Lester.

  • bof!!! j'aime pas trop le son

  • You just can't help singing along to this beautiful song....

  • The group member next to The lead singer Eugene record is the guy that Joe Jackson was standing next to, telling the world after Micheals passing he was starting a new record company with, well that guy is one of the original members of the Chi~lights, his name, Marshall Thompson.

  • @tedkay Damn Ted! You called it! Good eye!

  • who else was singin along?

  • @31MillerTime31 I am!

  • dang

    everybody was rockin the fro!

  • I love this era of r&b. This song is so sincere and heart felt that I just dont know wat else to say...

  • what are those school kids doing in there? 2:33

  • wonder did anyone in the crowd actually DATE OR fall in love...or even married, this song is great!...GREAT TUNE Great times~

  • omg look at all those afors .i love this song so much.thanks for posting.

  • look at all them afro's hahaha

  • we need to bring back the afro

  • And by the way, the cat in the blue sweater and white collar at the bottom of the screen at the very start of the clip has the best. hair. ever.

  • Eugene's tenor is SOOO clear and tight. A dozen examples spring to mind - don't just focus on the biggest hits, seriously check these guys out; the catalogue is deep. "Stoned Out Of My Mind," "The Devil Is Doing His Work," "You Got To Be The One" - all mid- or uptempo jams without a hint of negativity about 'em. Craedel Jones was a top-notch bass singer, too. Great stuff. Thanks for posting, soultrain.

  • oh the styles of hair and fashion, and that smooth Chi town sound. This is when lyrics were understandable and you could sing along. I think I am showing my age

  • damn i wish i was living back in those days

  • crooklyn song!!!. how did eugene die

  • I always think of that movie when I hear this song. Def my favorite movie

  • Astoundingly !!! and Amazingly!!! song. I miss you Eugene and nobody can sang this tune but only him. Extradinary!!! vocal group. Thanks for posting.

  • keep old school songs like these alive. it doesn't matter if you're young or old, everything that is soul, r&b, funk, slow jams is always apart of legacy to pass down to.

  • The Chi-Lites, Delfonics and Brenton Woods love the old school slow jams.

  • Wow, this truly remind me of a time when life was so much simpler.

  • This that good music. I'm 23 and this right here that old school. No wonder my friends call me old school I just tell em I have a old soul.

  • This is SLIM !!!

  • I played with the Chi-lites in the 80's, and even got to play with Eugene for about a year before he quit; a few years later he died . RIP!

  • Comment removed

  • its a pity they were sitting down.....they would've belted it out more effectively.....hey what do I know they're the stars.......this is awesome!!!

  • Its great seeing them perform this song before they knew it was going to be a major hit

  • one of the greatest cuts of the 1970's

  • Thanks Don for all videos....the soul train continues to roll for all to enjoy and ride!

  • LOL @ the Afro I had one LOL...

  • damn everyone has an afro guess it wuz in back den

  • Beautiful!!!!!!

  • How lovely long time ago! LOVED THIS ONE SINCE I'VE HEARD ITS HARMONICA FOR THE FIRST TIME! I believe we were too young...

  • used to love watch this back then this music will never stop playing

  • How come dem brotha's is so white? They need to get out and get some sun.

  • Property of Soul Train Holdings, LLC...really? I did not know that...oh that's right I did. It's above the groups head in big bright White fonts superimposed on top of a dark background during the whole video. Not that you could have used some type of water markings or anything...because that's what the draws the people to soultrain video's. Fuck the legendary O'Jays and other legends. Give me some distracting big white fonts to look at instead.

    Who knew, ignorance is bliss!

  • It's a copyright issue....you know everyone wants their cut or prevent you from infringing on their rights. Given how accessible media is to EVERYONE it is what it is.......peace.

  • Back in the day...NIce!! Thanks

  • So what if their lip synching, it's their song.

I saw them in concert and they were fantastic!

  • It is fun to see the groups of the past perform. I like this performance too, they look great here especially with everybody dancing.

  • It's called LIP-SYNCHING, you fucks. NOT lip SINGING.

  • lip singing was the order of the day on Soul Train. Too bad, because they are fantastic live!

  • Damn this is real music, REAL R & B....and Im so diggin their fros.

  • So what they are lip singing? They have the voices to sang it live and the song has excellent lyrical content. When you hear them live, they sound the same as on their records. It is called real talent. They are professional and classy in their presentation. They look like real men.

  • good song but lip singing

  • 20 year old and wish the so called "talent" of today can make music like this. Almost every song made after the 1908's sucks

  • People may not like this, but I am a 48 yr. old black male. My generation of black men dropped the ball. Those are our kids out there with their pants hanging off of their asses. Those are our kids whether you have kids or not.

  • i hear u im 49 my goodness yes they are our children im mean litterally ours

gamagan1 signing off from newark new jersey

  • i may be a white girl, but i was raised on mowtown....thats all i know, its all i love

  • god bless u

    gamagan1

  • DAMMMMMM DEY CUD SING

  • so smooth. You know, we black people were so classy back then. I can see it all through this show- the people singing, the dancers in the background. We were so artistic. But now, all we have is money, cars, half-naked women dancing in our videos. This stuff annoys me. That's why I watch so many old-school videos on youtube. The new stuff is crap. I wish we had what we used to have even though racism was bad then. At least we had something special within our culture. Now it is rare.

    So sad.

  • Amen to that!!

  • glad you agree. today, too many black people get angry when you offer constructive criticism of our culture, which has regressed and has become decadent, probably more than mainstream culture- which is decadent also. But we as people were probably the most moral and artistic people in this country. We showed respect for our elders, our parents, etc. And that respect and artistry was shown more in our music than anything else. Our music was everything to us. Now, our music show what we have lost.

  • Whenever I hear this song I am taken to wherever this guy in the brown shirt went @ 2:30.

  • Yep, that shot says it all

  • that lead singer is FINE>>>>!

  • Eugene Record He passed away in July 2005

  • great clip

  • Man I remember this episode. Yeah,

gone are the days when the music was

simple and pure. I miss those days so

    much. Great times.

  • I wish i could have experienced this era when music was pure and original. I wish artists of today gave more effort and energy to their music...

  • All those under 35 - Study the Videos - Here is a period in time when People Had TALENT and Skillz and were creative ......

  • im a 19 candian white male

and i crave this shit right here

i got that soul and funk

  • One thing that's cool to watch in these old skool TV clips is the variety of sometimes strange ideas they came up with for staging the performances. Imagine watching a performance today that consisted of the band slowly swiveling back and forth on swivel chairs!

  • Love it, love it. This is great!!

  • Eugene-(sets the)-Record Straight tell like it is don't be shy lites shine that spot lite.

Oh Girl a classic ballad tune, in the club days before closing time, there was slow section for you to find a girl ask her for a dance if she said no the next one was always standing next to her........the last dance rocking steady and grindin the pepper.you can be sure you was escort that girl home......wow oh girl.......Chi-Lites_ back to the future? a timeless track

  • Classic!!!

  • Interesting instrumental track. This was all lipsync, but the mix on the track is a lot different .. less harmonica and less echo. Maybe a first mixdown rushed to make the show taping?

  • Man, if only love songs could still sound like this!!! Always loved this song by them!!!

  • This songs always remind me of the movie Crooklyn. That soundtrack is awesome.

    Look at their Afros... :-)

  • One of my favorite songs ever. It must be the harmonica that makes me feel like I'm floating on the Mississippi on a Sunday afternoon. This song puts me there.

  • Total classic and one of my all time favorites!

  • Soul Train Holdings, thank you for the great videos!! When are you going to start selling the Soul Train shows (especially the 70s)? I will spend hundreds of dollars for those on DVD!!

  • I second that

  • Música maravilhosa, como é fantástico assistir vídeos do Soul Train,e essa do Chi-Lites,é de arrepiar!!!!!

  • Ooh yes! Now that's a classic Soul Train episode. Got any more?

  • Odd how they're performing from swiveling office chairs.

  • Classic...Look at all of those "naturals" it was a beautiful time for black people.

  • A beautiful sea of AFRO'S. Perfect fro's for days.

  • i agree....much better than that processed bs

  • One of the best soul classics from the early 70's

  • I've never seen so many fros in the one room.

  • LOL

  • What can you say.. GOLD! I love the Fros...
