@citusmasher omg how much I agree with this even though I was born in 95. I feel like I was born in the wrong generation. I prefer this type of music most of the time.
Im 16 and ive been listening to this version since i was a baby and i LOVE it. Im even thinking about singing it for my school's talent show next month
One weird thing about the video... all the parts where Arsenio Hall appears have been 'smudged'. I know they were an item back then...but really, was that necessary?
Instead of talking smack about the guy, I think we should be THANKING J. Cole for introducing some of today's generation of music fans to the greatness of Paula Abdul!
The real problem here guys , is Paula Abdul being mentioned in the same sentence with that J. whatever guy....Paula Abdul is a legend , extremely talented choreographer and dancer, with skills comparable to those of the king of pop himself MJ...J.C is ..well just one more guy that thinks he can rap...end of story there
@IEnjoyTalent J cole is not a guy "who thinks he can rap", he can!! he's better than all the other rappers. he raps about REAL SHIT, not money bitches, drugs and hoes like those other stupid hip hop artists. and he doesnt rap about how fuckin "great" he is (like lil wayne). if u just listen to him u would realize that
You're all idiots...sampling is so damn common in music, especially in hip hop...whether its in lyrics or beats. Plus why do any of you care about J Cole's song "Work Out"? I can name at least 50 of his songs that are better...don't like it then don't listen to it. Stick to the music you like instead of dissing the music you don't care about.
@sodaandcookies1 that is true, except for the fact that he didn't take the hook and use it as a hook. He took the hook from this song and simply used it as an outro for his song. He wrote a completely different hook for "Work Out" and - like you said yourself - the hook is the most important part. Which he wrote himself :)
@sodaandcookies1 well that's like me writing a 10 page research paper and for the conclusion copying someone's work. Does that make it still okay and original?
Anyone saying J. Cole stole this from Paula is a complete idiot and doesn't deserve to be discussing music at all. He used 2 lines from this as a tribute to the song because he felt it related to his song. Paula Abdul and her publishing gave him permission to use the lines. Everything else in his song was created entirely by him. So to say he stole anything is absolutely absurd.
@TommyZing31 anybody that says j. cole didn't steal this is a sensitive little girl that worships miss Paula Abdul a little bit too much, go join the military or grow a pair...
@luv4ever555 actually he didnt. He used 2 lines from this as a tribute to the song because he felt it related to his song. Paula Abdul and her publishing gave him permission to use the lines. Everything else in his song was created entirely by him. so he didnt really copy her song :D
J Cole could never do the tap number and the 4 turns in the intro and will not win 4 VMA's for the same song like the original "Straight Up" by PAULA ABDUL. Nor will he ever get a a Star on the Hollywood Walk of fame or 2 emmy's for choreography. Oh Snap! Paula Rules!
You are a bunch of bitches, if you like this song better then the song that J. Cole used this chorus for, then just listen this song... what's the problem, other people like the other one better, you like this one..... no problem right? stop bitching hipsters.
@Cullenzz678 Yep, I just had to show this to my daughter she didn't know she was listening to a remake. Hell I used to be a DJ in my younger days and have this on a 45!
@Cullenzz678 maybe if you heard j coles song you wouldn't be saying that. Work Out is not a "version" of this song like you say it is. It was part of his sample to make an original song and used that line since it fit in what was saying. It was more a tribute than "stealing" like most idiots comment here. People need to understand the business of sampling songs before even opening their mouths.
I feel like J.Cole sampled this because of Andrew Garcia's version, but I could be wrong. Just seems like his version seems more like Andrew's version.
Paula Abdul has always played possum with her detractors. She happens to be a top flight performer, this video Straight Up was creative to the max and great music.Making it as a Lakers Cheerleader showed her determination.
Cannot believe someone slaughtered this song. -.- I grew up listening to this, and wanting to dance like her. It's one of my favorite songs of all time. ;_;

Paula Abdul made this song in 1989. Google it. It's a fact. J.Cole just got the main part of this song and made his own version. I like Paula's better.
ugh stupid ass people. ...j cole is lame as fuck. most rappers now a days take music from back then and just change it SLIGHTLY....not really creative with the music anymore
