I'm not sure how I see Hornby's efforts...I applaud the idea of making the engines resemble the body of the train on which they were based, as this makes the model more marketable to older modellers too...however their distinct lack of effort with some models make me think that it was just a cost saving measure to use the same moulds as another engine...
maybe you should add a bit on how controllable they are. do they jump from 0-100 in a second or do they reach it gradually making it better at shunting without smashing into the buffers...
This is easily one of my favorite episodes in this series.
If you think about it, in both the TV series and the original Awdry books, Toby was noted as being one of the weakest & slowest engines on Sodor. Therefore, it could be argued that in addition to better replicating the character's appearance, the Bachmann Toby also better replicates the prototypical performance.
Forgive me for asking, but are you considering doing a Bachmann vs Hornby Emily review at any point in the foreseeable future?
bachmann Toby certainly is a beautiful model. shame it's rather slow though. I only got it today but I am already pleased I got it. I also got Mavis so I've been doing shunting work on my trainset.
Hornby Toby disliked this video 3 times because he is too tall, can't win tug of war with Bachmann Toby, and is overpriced. Bachmann Toby disliked this video 2 times because he isn't strong, and he was called a garden shed.
i recently got a hornby toby and i only payed £8 for it second hand ans surprisingly it is stronger than a traction tyre diesel engine. i have 3 triang coaches and toby is the only one who can pull them
Never liked the look of Hornby's version right from the outset(rather like Edward-just wrong),but despite Bachmann's being slow,it's still a winner with me(I have two in fact).TBH,Toby's not really a sprinter & supposed to be old/slow anyway.
As for coaches,I intend to try & find him a Henrietta to replace his Hornby 4-wheelers.
"But wait, who's this?! It's Sir Topham Hatt, with a copy of the rulebook! It turns out that Garden Sheds are'nt eligible for the Tug of War! Team Thomas wins!" LOL
I got Hornby Edward, He looks really detailed and such but the only problem is that the boggys at the front always keep going in the wrong direction and get suck...
That's quite nice! the hornby model is tooo oversized! i was shocked. The bachmann model goes slow but is quite sturdy- my model having been opened by me many times and it's face being removed a million times. and it still works!
I'm guessing Spencer, since me and Gavin offered ours for you to borrow, and you asked for Emily which I'm not sure you have (I could be wrong).
Assuming it is Spencer, I look forward to it, I have mixed feelings about the bachman model and the hornby version is what you would call a "stunner" =)
Finally, a Toby vs Toby video! Very interesting, I must say; I would have thought the Hornby would have been a winner by a landslide. Sure had me fooled.
By the way, I'm excited to see your Non-Awdry character video. I can hardly wait!!!
@sonicxthomasexpert well if simierski does Spencer it will be interesting to see if it is as popular as Toby. Who would have thought a square dirt coloured tram would be soooooooo popular. It certainly caught me by surprise.
I own the bachmann Toby and mine is quite slow too, but I say that is for the best. Remember the J70 trams aren't suppose to be racers, so i feel that Toby's pace compared to my other models adds some realism.
@simierski TBH, I don't really care how old you are its just that you sit watching Thomas and friends on Youtube i mean you search for it, if it comes on the TV its different.....
@9litch3s - I have a 4 year old godchild who loves Thomas. Go figure. I make money from toy reviews - natural progression of interest to job. I mean, you're a 20 year old who looks up computer glitches and puts them on your channel, what's up with that?
@JesusBlack14 - to be fair, the QC of the Bachmann models suggests to me that it depends entirely on how good your model is. I've had a lot of people say their James models are nowhere near as powerful as mine proved it was.
@leokimvideo - not sure why people marked your comment as spam, but I've unmarked it.
Tell you what, Toby is the sleeping giant of Thomas & Friends. I've heard a lot of people say they don't like Gordon, Thomas, Emily, Lady and so on, but not a single bad word for Toby. This video has opened my eyes to the power of the tram engine. I'll have to retract the garden shed comment, of course...!
@leokimvideo - it's strange - I wonder if its the personality that comes with the character too?
So many people cite Edward as their favourite character, and its always down to the characteristics which to some extent Toby shares. Is it because Toby is not conventional in look that people seem to have hidden their fondness for this character?
If you haven't got him I wish you the best of luck on obtaining one; apart from reviews owning him would be a pleasure :) I have no Hornby Thomas stuff or anything but with it's increasing rarity of some characters I'm starting to think I should buy some.

On the Bachmann USA website, you can see the innards of the models by looking in the spares department for the G scale Thomas range.
@simierski pt1 there is a G scale modeller close to where I live, his layout is in his front yard. He was telling me the issues he's had with the Hornby Thomas G scale and reported to me it's basically expensive trash, I say expensive as you pay a premium because of it's connection to the franchise.
He's had lots of issues with the motor and basically reports it runs like a dog. Now you have to consider many G scale modellers choose G scale because they enjoy taking the hobby to the next level
@simierski pt2, i have him lined up to do a video about but I will also wrap around it a Christmas story. He said to me the only benefit adding Thomas and Percy to his layout was all of a sudden kids started to love his railway, before this his layout was basically ignored
he really had me thinking about the magnetic attraction of Thomas, and from that came the thought to see if I can nail down exactly what kids see in Thomas, is it the face, colour scheme or shape.
@simierski pt3 i know now a little more as I know the result from my son choosing between Tomy Thomas and Action Thomas, this has really detailed to me a very interesting aspect to the appeal of Thomas to a very young mind.
It's really powerful stuff, and I will even say it's life changing for many.
What other train in recent history has had such a impact on children? And really the hobby of model railways owes lots to the little blue engine.
@simierski pt5, there is one thing which is really powerful and that's the toys and play which young children end up remembering all through their life, they will have flashback reminders of all the good things via this toy, and I know from the comments I have seen Thomas is a key component to so many people.
Those McD happy meal toys work on this principal, on my video much older people look back with good memories related to toys they remember, in a flash they are kids again
@simierski pt6 this also came out in that "my fav thomas contest". No matter how much you think you grow up the child is always inside.
My first sighting of the Thomas show was when I was in High School and it had a big impact on me then due to the amazing model work, how could you ignore a show like that?, it must have totally blown the minds of young children seeing all these bright coloured trains with faces coming alive in a fantasy world. Dare say same thing happened 65 years ago as well
@leokimvideo - ran out of space - point is, I'd definitely consider doing them, but only when money is better, and I've had a chance to think about how they could be tested well.
The way this is going TOBY will overtake the other reviews in a few days, now who would have thought this character is so popular
I will even say TOBY is far more popular than Gordon, but what's interesting very few will say out in public they love TOBY, but we are seeing clearly this character has a huge pull on the fans.
@leokimvideo yes, I am aware of some conversions! I have seen yours and topkazfatt's models, which both look very good! thing is, the one user has been told there are no Hornby or Bachmann models to compare, so his comments are meaningless! Though, it would be very interesting to compare homemade Lady models!

simierski 10 months ago
@simierski the spam thing would be due to my many comments here, youtube hates spammers.
I feel much of Toby's appeal is he's so different to the other bright coloured big personality engines, he comes with a lot less baggage.
It's so easy to say Gordon or Spencer is beat, and sure they are the BIG characters, but as we know having a big character does not impress everyone.
Being mundane can have huge advantages in a alpha male stand off!

simierski, have yoru considered looking at the larger scale bachmann v the large scale thomas
i know this would cost heaps of money but I am hearing the G scale thomas has some major issues and is a real cheap build
what have you heard
leokimvideo 10 months ago
@leokimvideo - I've heard a lot of mixed stories.
The main problem is quality control, not necessarily the design of the models themselves. They are designed to be cheap and functional, whilst also offering a fairly robust design. Unfortunately the main problem with both Thomas and Percy (can't comment on James) is their motor and geartrain design. On the Bachmann USA website, you can see the innards of the models by looking in the spares department for the G scale Thomas range.

leokimvideo 10 months ago
@simierski pt4, BUT seeing the mass appeal of Toby throws all my ideas out the window related to the reason why Thomas is popular.
Toby has not got a classic shape, nor colour and his face lacks the cheeky charm of Thomas.
So has Toby got something even more primeval?
Maybe it's his number 7, whatever it is this garden shed has some magical power just like Thomas!
leokimvideo 10 months ago

@leokimvideo - it's certainly proved the voting system works - so many more people voted for toby by PM than commenting on the video!

@123emilymason I can't even guess how many timesit's been said that NO MODELS OF LADY EXIST!
TheRyanCarMan 10 months ago
@TheRyanCarMan I have a Lady ERTL which has a HO wheel conversion, it can be seen in my last upload!
so to be totally correct there are models of Lady, and I have a HO one!
dare say the argument will continue for weeks, months to come. why stop now!
leokimvideo 10 months ago
@leokimvideo yes, I am aware of some conversions! I have seen yours and topkazfatt's models, which both look very good! thing is, the one user has been told there are no Hornby or Bachmann models to compare, so his comments are meaningless! Though, it would be very interesting to compare homemade Lady models!

@TheRyanCarMan Lady is yet another flash in the pan character, thats a big trait of this franchise.

@leokimvideo - now there's an idea...how easy is to convert one character into another...!
