the fuzzy guitar came by accident, during a recording session a lead come loose from the amp and was just making contact the fuzz was the end result but becauce it was a new sound they decided to keep that set up for certain track's................strange but true
Really interesting research on how the fuzz guitar sound and by whom available on the Net. Also,, who played in the house band at the quonset hut studio, run by a real experienced man. Learn the history, AND enjoy the Music. Thanks so much to all who put up the great and the obscure tunes in all genres!
I purchased the Solid Smoke anthology (not the blue vinyl version) in the late seventies and I've been listening to it ever since. Absolute killer rockabilly.
With much respect to the Blue Caps, Perkins boys, and Elvis Scotty and Bill, I think it's safe to say that these guys are the greatest Rockabilly band, then and now.
Cliff Gallup was the coolest, when Setzter walked up to his door, ole Cliff pulled out a shotgun and said ''Get off my lawn, you hippy freack'' ''Why are you here anyway''I don't think Setzer put up a mucha fight, waddaya think ?
If is this true, and with all my respects for the virtuoso guitarist and the dead person, I think that "ole Cliff" was a redneck and a dangerous fella. But, It seems that in America you like to grab the shotgun as often as you can... Dispite his amazing strumming, he wasn't a rocker, was a virginian family man and that's why he quited the Blue Caps. When he died his widow didn't let local papers to mention he was one of them.
Let me tell you something about Johnny, he didn't care too much for politics, what he did care about is music, like most musicians of today and also that era, he was listening to rhythms when some were listen to the radio, so don't sat this and that about our Johnny, he was first and foremost a musician and not just a musician but one of the best Rock"A"Billy artists along with Carl Perkins to hit the scene, and without him, there probably wouldn't be any raw rockabilly let alone stray cats.
Thanks for the post...do you know where I can get the audio version of Tear It Up performed live by any chance? I read a review of it today on Sean Mather's site (I think it was). Can I recommend Ferris Wilder's Its All Your Fault on here...I came across it by accident. Thanks again. GB
Hi, I think I have the live version of Tear it up on my youtube channel...I found it on a CD release by Bear Family Records, something called the Johnny Burnette: the complete recordings (it's a bit expensive but a must have if you love rockabilly). Check out the other Johnny Burnette CDs by Bear Family, they probably have this song on a cheaper release :)
Grady was, indeed Top Dog, as was Grady's close friend, bassist, Bob Moore who not only played Bass on many of Johnny Burnette's recordings but also acted as bassist for Dorsey on his solo artist recordings such as "There Was A Tall Oak Tree" Hey?! Dorsey was busy giving 100% to his vocal performance. It would'e been cruel to demand that Dorsey give the vocal performance of a lifetime while also simultainiously laying down the bass line.
I have pupils come to me every week to learn rock gtr ike SRV, Gary Moore Trower etc ... I play them THIS and they change their minds !! I promise !!! Now these kids want to play like Grady Martin .. however i thn have to say .. well you're in trouble .. i don't know how either !!
Most pepole think that this song was sung by johnny but infact it was sung by his brother Dorsey. he also sang lead vocal on - my love your a stranger : chains of love: check the bear family cd rockabilly boogie, recording session details..
I remember playing lead guitar back in 1984 with Kingfishers (badly, though). And later singin vocals with Something Else in 1994 (worse still, but who counts). Anyway, one of the best in original version.
the fuzzy guitar came by accident, during a recording session a lead come loose from the amp and was just making contact the fuzz was the end result but becauce it was a new sound they decided to keep that set up for certain track's................strange but true

johnny burnette trio well ahead of their time and a big influence, especially on the pirates post johnny kidd

Grady Martin Played lead on most of the Trio's tracks, including this one.
Paul did play during rehersals but only to give Grady direction, which he probably wouldn't have needed anyway.

One of the greatest records ever-Grady Martin here on guitar deserves equal billing with Burnette who also does a great job.
I think the original of this tune was by Roy Hall but not 100% sure.

Still great. And also one of the grimmest lyrics of the era, listen also Benny Joy´s Dark Angel (that Johnny Cash -style piece).

The Trio was my fave rockabilly band bar none. How excited was I to see Paul Burlinson and his band at Caistor in the 1980's
The trio was the original punk rock band. just a shame JB went over to the ballads
thehalfcut 3 years ago
it's actually Grady Martin playing on that track and all of the cooler Johhny Burnette Trio Tracks.(A session guy too)
Paul Burlison played on songs like "Tear It Up". You can hear the differences in style.
In my oppinion - Grady was the top dog!
