It's a combo of things..his looks, his presence on stage...his ability to blend technique with the feel, the emotion...you can tell he really loves what he does...it is his passion...L.
Chopiniana is one of my favourite ballets and golly, does Baryshnikov bring this to life. This is such a stunning pas de deux - My absolutely favourite to perform.
@laracroftbb Exactly. That doesn't add or detract from their wonderful and talented performances. I think their personal lives are their own, and everyone should keep their noses out of it.
I've got a zillion questions Is this the one the legendary Marie Taglioni performed? The choreo I mean? Or has that original choreography been lost? And is this the ballet where she traditionally first rose on pointe? Has this ballet ever been done with the soft stitched 'pointe' shoes originally worn by Taglioni? Thanks to whomever can answer! :)
I'm not sure about this particular ballet but for the most part, the original choreography isn't used. However the romantic style is still used. Eg. the focus is on the lower leg, there aren't any major lifts or turning. The partnering was more about supporting the woman in her promenades, balances etc. This is because as you mentioned the pointe shoes were much softer, which decreased the ballet vocabulary.
No this wasn't the first ballet en pointe, that was La Sylphide.
taglioni was the principal of la sylphyde, this is LES sylphides, a completely different and much later ballet, by another choreographer altogether (in russia, btw, they refer to this ballet as "chopiniana" as the score is by chopin, and not written for an orchestra originally, but rather for the pianoforte.
That is sooo beautiful! It's so very hard for me to watch some of the reality dance shows that are on now because you KNOW you are not seeing what the best in the world looks like.
This is such a treat. She was a principal at ABT when I went to see them all the time. I always thought she was not just a beautiful dancer but a beautiful woman. Thanks!
i think this is the best version of sylphiedes ever. she really brings out the ghosty, light, slender and gracious aspect. and Baryshnikov fits her perfectly, because he is just as light and graciuos as her. PERFECT :D. and i can't find it anywhere on dvd oder video :(
Im November an unserer großen Ballettaufführung tanzen wir unter anderem Les Sylphides zum Teil übernommen aber das meiste umchoreographiert, das wird einfach toll! Und das hier sieht einfach nur perfekt aus!
Misha was one of the best ever( but not greater than Nureyev, and I saw them both live and in their prime). Les syphildes is not the best intro to Misha. Check out his Don Quixote clips and watch his fast turns, elevation, exquisite steps, etc.
So, I'm just starting to get intrested in Ballet and everyone keeps telling me he is the best, but I want to know why exactly he is. If someone could tell me.
there are a few clip of his albrecht if you can find them, in particular one of him solo from the second act ... i like him not only for his technique but for the nuances in his dancing, his interpretations of the roles, his presence on stage, i just can't take my eyes off him - even in something like les sylphides
@Quemin he has impeccable technique but also he is passionate about his parts, he makes you look. he's like all the great ballet dancers, male and female, it's impossible to be bored while you can watch them dance.
@Quemin, I think you hit it right on the head - he is technically brilliant, but there are many technically excellant dancers. It is for what you feel when you watch him - can you feel the joy, and does your heart flutter in this video - when you watch something like The Young man and Death do you feel the sadness tearing at you while he dances his pain? It is not only about technical performance, it is about the heart, the emotion you can put into it, and what you can make others feel.
@Quemin For one thing, other dancers seem to propel themselves against gravity into the air for leaps. Baryshnikov seems to float by nature and merely deigns to land at the end of the flight, though not really necessary...

Baryshnikov is so full of himself, always trying to call attention to himself rather than supporting the ballerina properly. This performance is OK, a little boring.
For me, it is entirely the opposite that I see in him. He is completely attentive to his partner. His technique is clear precise, beautiful. He creates the image of a 19th Century poet of the sort one would think of as Byron or Shelley. His performance here is masterful. And the whole time he is all boy, unlike Nureyev, whose style was so hysterical that when he first appeared in NYC, most of us said, "Yes, but which one is the Ballerina?"
I appreciate your constructive criticism to my statements... I was actually posting comment on his Don Quixote clip (ABT performance) here by mistake... he definitely is more attentive to his ballerina here.
I checked out his Don Quixote ABT and I do agree a little with you, as brilliant as he was. I find Baryshnikov an incredible dancer in Les Sylphides, he is wonderful in Act II of Giselle, better than his Act I, I think maybe it has to do a little with his acting... he is very earnest but overacts slightly in dramatic parts.
ill ask her next time i see her in class but i think she's 5'0. but she just 16 so she has a couple of more years to grow. are u a professional dancer?
Companies love petite dancers, there perfect for pas de derx and pretty much everything. Well thats what my director always told us.Every height has there advantages in the ballet world, don't be discouraged because of size its the most important thing to being a great dancer! Best of wishes to your friend!

Very few people know that this ballet was originally called "Chopiniana" because it was choreographed to the musical pieces of Chopin.

Baryshnikov had a way of magic with his partners. He would handle the lady with such gentleness and strength at the same time, he is astounding.
