The misdirection isn't needed. During the show Daniels could have been giving subtle messages to the audience, by saying something but the audience forgets to remember whats said, or there could be pictures around the set, very small, in odd places, to influence them.
When Paul asks an audience member to come up they will subconciously (without knowing it) deliberately select the card Daniels wanted them to as we all fall prey to suggestion without knowing it.

Larry Becker's work is amazing and excellent for anyone wanting ideas for their own mentalism/mental magic act.
