Why did barbers use barber poles? What exactaly are they for? Anyone could read the building and know a barbershop. What is it really are they for?

The modern barber pole originated in the days when bloodletting was one of the principal duties of the barber. The two spiral ribbons painted around the pole represent the two long bandages, one twisted around the arm before bleeding, and the other used to bind is afterward.

No, they are supposed to go down. The symbolism is that of blood flowing down into the bowl at the bottom of the pole. Barbers used to be surgeons, and one of the things they often did was bloodletting. Look it up if you don't believe me.
