It is a misconception that monks have/ take a "vow of silence" !! They merely practice being silent; especially during the nighttime hours after evening prayer ("Compline") until the next morning. This period is termed the "Great Silence".

You failed the test immediately... when you broke the vow of silence.
You failed it twice by trying to conceal that fact from those who hoped better from you.
Or did you not take the vow personally?
