I have The Carpenters At Christmas complete with original commercials 1977& The carpenters A Christmas portrait 1978-50 min. Both Specials on one dvd-110 min.
If Karen was still alive, all of these specials would have been on DVD by now. Love Richard for being amazing musician, but he has been a real stick in the mud in regards to preserving their visual legacy. He has no idea how much the public longs for this part of their history. Like I said, Karen would have insisted...

As we an see here, visually Karen couldn't have been more of the All American girl. I think because of her mother, she always felt bad about appearance, never thought she was beautiful and so on, all of which had little to do with reality. She looked as perfect as she sounded and in performance she exuded a sense of well-being, sensitive feeling and rich mood that simply can't be learned and which just is. She remains such a loss to our world.
I adore this and I adore the Carpenters, particularly Karen. She had such a beautifully velvet voice like no other and such a gorgeous personality. Great performer too. I do have to admit though, even though Karen looks frail here, I can't help but compare how she looks here to how she looks in the 1978 special.... Here, Karen still has some of the genuine sparkle in her eyes and look of youth. But by '78, that sparkle was fading and she started to look so so thin and tired. Truly tragic RIP x
@sraphael Agreed. There is a 180 degree difference in Karen's appearance and weight between '77 and '78. She was very thin here, but still had a womanly shape. Not to mention that she was still playing softball and doing active things in '77. By '78, so far as I know, she was doing none of that, and I don't even think that she could drum anymore.
Someone please rewind time....wholesome music and innocence like this doesn't exist anymore. So many people from this time miss it desperately and others like me who weren't born till the early 90s wish they could have been around for this...
thank you a lot. i saw this tv program when i was a boy. i am japanese buddist but i have known how christmas is holly and beautiful. i known many christmas songs from this show, i long for these songs and plays. banzai(;)
I wonder what it would take for ABC to dig through their vaults and air this on the Family Channel? ABC is owned by Disney, and the Carpenters LOVED Disneyland. As a matter of fact, Richard worked there for a summer job. Later they shot videos for their songs at Disneyland, participated in Mickey's 50th anniversary, and Karen collected ALL things Mickey! Couldn't the nice people at Disney give us a REAL gift next season, and air this?
I am only 20 years and would give anything to have lived in this time... I wish we still had quality shows and specials like this on TV! It's not Christmas without the Carpenter's in my house!!
Now that's a Christmas special! I love the Carpenters, it's a real shame I wasn't around back then to experience it all. I would have loved to have seen this on television! Brilliant!
I love this Carpenters Christmas Show, but the video and audio are very bad.. These Christmas shows are all but non-existent today, and will probably be outlawed by Obama and the Liberals.. along with Christmas itself, and anything white, like snow...
This is so cool. I wish they'd release the Carpenters' t.v. specials on DVD. Had Karen recovered from AN, I can only imagine what she'd be doing today. Based on interviews and articles, I can totally imagine her doing a Broadway show or movies or something along those lines. My understanding is that she was quite a good actress/comedienne, in addition to her unparalleled musicianship. Ah, we can dream.
I was stationed overseas in a forsaken Army base during all of 1977. We saw this via Armed Forces Radio and Television network. Talk about a great reminder of home and the good 'ole USA! It was unusual in the commercials were included as well. This was an unexpected highlight for the troops, and it was shown several times. Thanks to all!!!
Not only is this a brilliant showcase of Karen's amazing and unique singing, it also shows what a good actress she was. It never ceases to make me feel sad that she was only 27 here - and didn't get to make more of these tv shows. I miss her, but Christmas time gives me an excuse to watch these videos and enjoy her brilliance once more.
I went and saw the Carpenter signature on Karens tomb and broke down! I could not take it and did not take picturs because I had to have respect for thr family!
I miss karen all year..but esp at Christmas..her music makes my holiday special..she was always so warm and friendly every time I saw her...I love you Karen..thank you for posting this..
she was always coverd up and at the time we all thought it was part of the show but it was because she had no ideal how beaustiful and wonderful she really was that's the sad part she was killing herself and none of us knew we just enjoyed the music
My goodness thanks for this upload. You know, I miss Frank Sinatra, I miss Stevie Ray, I miss Ella, I miss John Lennon- but somehow the one person that will still catch me off guard and make me tear up a bit: Karen. Dang, 25 years later and it still sucks every bit as bad.
Karen's voice is so pure and natural, when she's on the radio, I immediately recognize her beautiful voice. A lot of singers today sound like each other. When you cannot recognize one singer from another, you know times have changed.
Mr. Steve excuse me! Our troops in Iraq are the bomb! I am against Bush but you have to understand that our troops are puppets under the Bush administration as what is happening all across the USA today! Big shots trying to control everybody and I am personally getting sick of it!
I love the Christmas season but we must remember that Bush is a free spender and gas prices are through the roof and we are paying for this war in Iraq! Wake up you republicans who support Bush!
These fools should be more concerned with their familys and be at home with them instead of being over in some other country being a hero and destroying the world,Shows you how important their Family really is hey.
Say a prayer for our girls and boys serving in Iraq! They have to have a Christmas too! I am against Bush but I love our troops so much! Keep them in your heart and in your mind!
Screw those Evil boys and girls in Iraq or anywhere for that matter,It is Arogant, gulible, easily led evil %&%(*&(%$( like that who are helping the Governments ruin this world

I grew up in Downey , California and went to the same high school as the Carpenters although it was more than 10 years later. Everyone in town would drive by the Carpenters house at Christmas time because they always had great decorations. I used to see Richard Carpenter at the grocery store!

There are memories associated with these specials that simply can not be re-created. And I pity the young folks for missing out on this feeling.
