  • The sound of a sleepy Radial Engine waking up, there simply is nothing like it in the world. I like how it sounds so grumpy and from there gets angry. I like that you have to work for it's co-operation rather then just press a button and I just generally like the engine.

  • That's a mighty fine way to sweep out the hangar :) Love that engine.

  • Me starting my car every morning for work....

  • Super cool video and comments :-)

  • best sound in the world

  • Beautiful! Love that sound!

  • thers just something about a radial that makes them so perfect. I lov radial planes

  • Wow, what a rare airplane you have there. Sounds and looks amazing. Hope to see a video of you flying it soon.

  • A little bit reluctant, that engine. But a real nice video. And a very nice plane.

  • Radials are often like this on cold start!

  • Amen to that!

  • nothing beats the sound of a round engine

  • lovely machine. the thing with radials is that the lower cylinders tend to fill with oil when the engine is off, hence the smoke and misfiring on start up

  • That's just a magnificent sound!

Forget turbines, piston engines of any kind will forever by my passion!

  • Love the sound of a older engine. Newer engines just dont have it. Thankyou for posting.

  • Yea We need things to fiddle with.....

  • that is a beautiful sight

  • Smoggy. Cool sounds though! Awesome.

  • well said on your scroll !!

  • where is the rudder?

  • There is no rudder at the fuselage center line. This aircraft got two stabilizers/rudders mounted on the tips of the horizontal stabilizer (like the B-25)

  • Great Vid! YOur SoOO right about Rounds B-e-a-utiful noise, b-e-a-utiful smell b-e-a-utiful smoke

  • I agree 110% and then some!! Thanks for that awesome video!

  • There's NO SOUND like a radial!!!!!

  • Absolutely loved it! 100% agreement. No other sound like it. Round engines rule. Like an old Connie pilot had on his ball cap: "Jets Are For Kids". Yessir!

  • Super Merveilleux , le demarrage du "Broussard"

  • My sentiments exactly.

  • Thank you. What a sound and what characterfull machine!

    Peter

  • yeah ok there is something wrong with the guy before me. I am pilot and I've never started or even flown in a radial, but my hat is off, that is really a beautiful sound and a beautiful engine all round. Congrats.

  • mmm. Round engines kick ass. IMHO, its gotta be a be round, on an after burning turbofan. nothing else will do.

  • I love radials as much as most people, but i'm glad my commercial flights are turbine powered.

    Modern > Old School

  • Those radial engines sound so sweet. Plus they have better looks than the jets.

  • this is awsome. Love those radial engines.

  • Nettes Video, nur der Kommentar am Anfang stört mich, denn eine Jet-Turbine zu starten erfordert mindestens genau so viel technisches Verständnis wie ein Sternmotor

  • And then, God made round engines, and said: go, Man, go fly.

  • Why does it puff smoke like that, as if there is a cylinder missing?

  • Oh yeah, Radial engines have a triat that all cylnders don't fire right off. Takes a while, especially if its been sitting for a while. They spit smoke, carbon buildup, and raw fuel, but are also some of the most powerful (torque-wise) engines in the world.

  • The bottom two cylinders tend to collect oil. The pilot/engineer/mechanic/whoever will open a valve on those cylinders to drain out what accumulated (there's other methods of avoiding hydraulic lock, of course...that's just one), but it doesn't get rid of all of it! Few minutes of running, and it usually burns off.

  • Absolutely sensational. Nothing like a petrol engine firing in sub zero temperatures. Starts like my old V6 Evinrude 235 Cross Flow. Real aeroplanes run with round engines. (OK maybee V types if they start at 6 until 12)

  • Not sure hat was better...listening to a radial engine idle or the running commentary...

  • nothin like watchin a round engine belch smoke and fire and then finally come to life , and hear it run like a well oiled machine .

  • Ever started a P-51 Mustang, and heard it fly? That's a beautiful rolls royce merlin engine!! What kind of plane you got there?

  • I've been standing close by a Mustang that fires up, and of course there is nothing like a Merlin...

The aircraft in the video is a Max Holste MH.1521 Broussard built in France 1956.

  • good thing the engine wasnt flooded. My car sometimes starts like that

  • LOL! Good commentary in the vid.

  • you have just gotta love radial engines. WHAT A SOUND that is not just an engine it is alive

  • GAWD what a sound... I never get tired of old round motors...

  • Where exactly is this plane located?

I think I've seen one near Stockholm, Sweden where I live, on the airfield Skå-Edeby? Is that the one?

  • This aircraft (LN-WNB) is located at Kjeller airfield (Lillestrøm).

We used to have two Broussards in Norway (LN-WNA & LN-WNB).

LN-WNA was sold to Sweden a few years ago, but I am not sure where it is based.

  • I LOVE THE OLD ENGINES

  • fett :D

  • i love way you conrol the engine to pick uup the pitch noice to start it isa AWSOME

  • HA!!! I absolutely LOVE IT!!! Especially the comment about turbines smelling like a boy scout camp full of coleman lanterns. I've got a little over 1200 hrs flying Ag Cats with 985's and 1340's on the nose. Nothing like firing her up first start of the morning!

  • Nice! very sweet! Would really like to hear a R4360 starting like that!

  • Ha! The schpeal scrolling along the bottom is absolutely priceless! Yes, truly the radials are a man's powerplant. Nothing like the sound of a healthy P&W or Wright at startup, nor is there nothing like the enormous billowing cloud of oilsmoke.

  • Oooo, gotta love the old clunkers :)!! True- turbines do sound pretty cool the first time... Then get more boring and boring... Radials are just so much more unpredictable...

I prefer the good old Merlin 24s (Spitfire freak :P) BUT it's still music to my ears!!

    Keep it running :)!!

  • You said it, brother! Jets are for wimps! Too simple! Real machines are those that take determination to operate! That helps ensure appreciation and love! Just like a woman.

  • That's Awesome! You're right, radial engines smell like God intended flying machines to smell!

  • The text isn't really mine. It's a text of unknown orgin.

  • Right on!!!

  • is it fuel injected? what kind of fuel does it run on? and what kind of starter was that, as i noticed that the propeller was spinning before engagement of the starter. That is an AWESOME sounding engine!!!

  • No it's not fuel injected.

It's a carburator and a single stage centrifugal compressor. Search for "Pratt & Whitney R-985" on Google and you find more info.

The reason the propeller spins before you hear the starter engage, is purly because of out of sync audio.... The process of uploading the video on YouTube messed it up.

  • how many cylinders is that engine

    ??

  • It's nine cylinders.
